I used to live there in upper hutt myself haha, there's a small coffee shop not far from the train station, can't remember the name, but do remember the logo of it, they sell arguably the best thick shakes in the whole lower/upper hutt area, maybe even better than those in wellington CBD. The logo is quite odd if I admit, but simple, can't miss it. Its a white skull with a black background, they do monthly themed shakes.

Living in the UK, the thing i really miss from NZ is the shop canopies, theres nothing worse than a high street on a rainy day, the other big advantage of them is when looking for a particular shop you can look down the street and see signs hanging from them, over here you have to walk the entire length to find it.

You passed my old work, which I waved at, Mr Trans, who makes the best Steak & Cheese pies in Upper Hutt (used to be Munns Bakery on Fergusson Drive until they closed), saw a couple of new stores in the Mall and much more. As a Kiwi I find it weird whenever I'm in the UK or North America that shops do not have verandahs over the footpath. To me it's ridiculous that shoppers have to walk along their frontages totally exposed to the weather which in Britain is often very unpleasant. I don't get it and particularly why no-one there seems to have ever thought of it. In fact every home I've ever owned in NZ there was either a verandah covering an outdoor deck or I have built one. In fact I couldn't live in one without it. I remember being in one of those stately homes in Somerset (UK) and couldn't believe that with all the wealth that built it they didn't think of it????? I have some British ancestry but things like that make the UK feel very foreign to me.

@ike637 NZ gets at least a couple of tropical storms every year, and the verandas seem to hold up. Having said that, most commercial buildings, built in the last 25 years don't seem to have verandas.

Actually I live in a small town in NZ where the most recent new commercial building was probably built in the 80s and all the older ones from mostly the 19th Century have all been recently renovated. All have verandahs. In the cities I haven't noticed any lack of them. Christchurch is 250kms away with heaps of new builds since the earthquakes

Next time you'll have to venture a little further north to Birchville where you'll find the beautiful Harcourt Park and up a bit more to Kaitoke where they did some filming for LOTR. Mmmm...Can't think there's anything "weird" about Upper Hutt! Its a dam shame Brewtown didn't allow you to video all the breweries, bars, restaurants, and entertainment, recreational and event/concert facilities. It also hosts a thriving Sunday market. And, the swimming pool is in the process of being rebuilt, bigger and better, , and if you'd walked down the road a wee bit more you would have discovered the amazing Maidstone Max park, sports facilities, mountain bike and walking tracks, and the amazing Sports Hub that was near to completion. All within 5 to 10 minutes walk from the shopping area! How many cities or towns could boast that?
