Hi Steve, I remember when I was a young adult I went to Sound By Singer. I went to a demo room and there were a pair of B&W, with the Kevlar midrange woofer. I had never seen anything like that and said to myself, lm going to own a pair of those one day. Lol... I’m still waiting ☹️

I understand the logic in building a system slowly to be able to buy better components but doing it in such a way that you can't even listen because you have to wait 6 months for the next item is daft. That said, I think there's something really nice about older audio gear and totally understand people wanting to "collect" vintage amps, turntables etc. I wish I had the room/funds to do the same thing but were I to do so, I would still want to use them albeit as second/third systems. I'd love to be in a position where I was so wealthy that I could drop thousands on audio gear and "forget" to collect it! As an aside, congratulations Steve: you're one of the few Americans that pronounces the word "niche" properly!!

In the late 80s a close friend and myself built a bunch of electrostatic speakers. We did all kinds of modifications to see which works best. We actually got a couple to sound pretty good. At the same time we build small Subs using dynaudio drivers. We built enclosures with lead / cement boxes. The internals aluminum honeycomb. We sold plenty of these. Now, back then you sold by Word of Mouth, because of no internet. My friend at that time saved up money for three years to buy his first set of electrostatic speakers. He paid around $8,500. He left them in the box and original wrapping for almost 15 years. His wife got sick around that time and we lost contact. I bet he still hasn't opened them.

I’m an independent adjuster and handled a claim for this guy. When I went into his home I noted a lot of expensive audio gear and, yes, I was very jealous. What really blew me away were the 6 vintage McIntosh mono tube amps and preamps all lined up. I asked if I could hear the system. He said no because they were not hooked up to the rosewood monitor speakers. He just liked the way they looked when turned on. And then there were the 3 pairs of Amati Homage speakers also not hooked up. Then the 2 crown mono amps etc etc. I was almost in tears, seriously. Anyway, just subscribed finally. Great channel.

I get the collection thing. For me having an object of beauty however means being able to see it (at least) - even if it is not on display all of the time but maybe put away in a case that is taken out from to time. In it's box unopened I guess means just knowing that you "have it". Some depression era folks were like that about things but not necessarily audio gear. Having a sense of 'plenty" of somethinng was important or having a "good" one of these or other. Who knows if that did not trickle down generationally. I like having such things accessible if not always out. For some folks it is older things that come back. How many of us for example had turntables put away and then recently brough them back out? Mine was there but not used. "Oh you still have a tunrntable? "- people woud say.. So many different meanings. I know the topic here is new stuff - but put away long enough that too, gets old.

There was a German customer who ordered a Linn Sondek LP12 in 1994 from my friend who used to operate a hifi store back then. Today, in 2018, my friend still has that Linn Sondek LP12 new in box. What happened to that German customer nobody knows. My friend doesn’t intend to resell that turntable just in case that German customer comes back and claim it.

I used to work part time for the Audio/Photo on an Air Force Base overseas in the early 90's. They were cleaning out the warehouse there and found some older BNIB (brand new in box) equipment hidden away above the office space. There was a pair of Klipschorn in zebrawood, a Nakamichi Dragon turntable and a few other things I can't remember. There was layaway paperwork on them but the person couldn't be reached. The manager offered them to me dirt cheap. I didn't want extravagant things like that at the time but eventually they were sold. Storytime: I had a customer there who couldn't stop buying equipment from me even though I tried to talk him out of it at times. He bought TWO Nakamichi Dragon cassette decks (one at a time)! His logic was he may want to "dub" tapes one day. Lol! Tried to sell him an Onkyo double cassette deck for that but he just had to have another Dragon! He had all top of the line Nakamichi and B&W stuff already.

This was so great, "Tales from the Crypt". I am reminded of a person I knew who purchased a very high performance and beautiful car, I forget the model. Friend of a friend. Anyways, this guy, he says, "Oh, I don't care about the performance, I'm never going to drive it like that. I like the way it looks and the attention it gets." All that engineering gone to waste, it feels like. But as you say. There was also a person who said they couldn't tell good sound from bad so they just bought components that looked pretty and matched their decor.

Interesting vlog. I don't think it's unusual to collect anything nowadays, even if it's never or seldom used. On the latter point, audiophiles do subconsciously collect equipment, recordings, etc, that may get limited use but then sits somewhere afterwards in a corner never to be used again. For example, those albums behind you - how many of them do you actually listen to? My guess is probably one or two on special occasions like when, say, a famous rocker or other artist passes away. You may dig through the stash to find an early album from that artist and play it. After the nostalgia is gone, it goes back into its sleeve never to see the light of day. So in that sense it becomes a collection piece, perhaps never to be played again. The same logic can also be applied to your collection of headphones, or whatever equipment you may have. I guess we're all sort of weird by default. ☺️

For some people the thoughts, deliberation and eventual purchase was the journey. Maybe they'll get around to actually using it one day, maybe not. But it isn't restricted to Hifi equipment regardless of price. Comic books, model figures, etc all have people who buy the stuff and never actually read or display them. The process of having bought it seems to be sufficient for enjoyment. How many DiY'ers bought tools they may need one day and never actually used? ;)

Some people acquire things that play to an identity they are trying to associate themselves with. Some of them, I'm convinced, actually work from a list someone else has compiled, of things one should have in order to present themselves as being it is. Status would be one of those s. Coolness would be another. They aren't especially interested in these things, and this is one possible explanation for why they possess them but don't actually use them. Why they purchase them and then don't pick them up - well, that's a new one. :)

That's not that much of a niche group. Many hobbies have these people. In photography it's a big thing. People who have huge amounts of expensive camera equipment, but mainly take pictures using their phone. It's, if you ask me, absolutely horrible. Here we all are trying to save up money to buy ourselves something nice, and these people just go out and buy crap they don't need. There's also people who take up drawing. Buy drawing tables and expensive paper and expensive sets of pencils and fineliners and then never draw. I do get collecting audio from a design standpoint, that's all fine. No one should tell anyone what is art and what isn't. My ex-girlfriend has a ReVox A77 she never uses, she just likes the aesthetics. I also get collecting. I had over 100 reel to reels at some point and obviously I didn't use them all. I used them all at least a few times, but many of them didn't get much excercise. But I don't get it when it's just spending money and doing nothing, just forgetting about it, or not caring to pick it up. The world's not a fair enough place for that kind of behaviour. And if I'm completely honest, it's also why I don't like McIntosh audio. It's not that good, it's really expensive and the people who buy it buy it to brag, not because they're serious audiophiles. It's the Marantz for the rich among ust ;).
@StringerNews1
6 жыл бұрын
What? Having an A77 for the aesthetics? That's crazy! Everyone knows the B77 was the pretty one... I must admit to taking up hobbies, getting bored and abandoning them. Of course my investments in materials were quite modest. I've known _noveau_ _riche_ people who buy costly items then go on to their next big adventure and forget all about the last conquest. I can't knock it, they have full lives and seem happy. Collecting great industrial design is another matter. I have a modest collection of such things. Great engineering and great artistry go hand-in-hand.

Never heard any McIntosh. But I talk to enough serious audio guys on the web that own, and love it. To think that you might be off the mark on it. I know there's always that rich dude that his it, and doesn't even use it. Or doesn't have it set up right etc. But I've seen guys that have owned all sorts of other gear get McIntosh, and fall in love with it. They like the house sound I assume. I plan on hopefully picking up some used McIntosh someday. Just to try it out.

My first real speakers were a pair of Apogee Centaurs with a long ribbon tweeter and a cone woofer. The woofer was extremely overdamped so I eventually grew tired of that and traded them in for a pair of Martin Logans. As great as my MLs are overall, the Apogee's ribbon outclassed the electrostatic panels. YES, someone needs to buy the Apogee name and start it up again. On a related note, I hope the folks that bought Aragon/Acurus can get some investment and make a bigger splash with their efforts at a do-over. (Aragon needs to round out its product line, and Acurus headed too far upmarket, IMO.)

We only really need the absolute basics - food, shelter etc. Nearly everything else is bought for security or status. For example, if I bought an Aston Martin automobile, its not for transport. It would tell people that I have lots of money and by association with its power, that I'm a virile stud. Jay Leno has 50 or 100 or whatever cars. Do you think he has them to drive places, maybe do his shopping ? No they are a mark of wealth and therefore, security and status. Looking at expensive hifi equipment, it very obviously says you have spare money but it also says you are a person of discerning taste, a connoisseur. Almost all buyers of expensive hi fi are men and what is the primary goal of men - to attract women. So what would be the subconscious reaction of women to a guy owning (but not listening to) expensive hi fi. Aside from the obvious association with money, she would think he's in control, powerful, capable - good marriage material. So there you go guys - get a good hi fi system and in no time, you'll be surrounded by beautiful women, just like owners of sports cars are.

At what point did I request to be relinquished of the responsibility of adding to the conversation? If Steve said that the deaf man was buying the turntable so that he could play music to others as well as ‘what it represented’; how is that mis-representing him? He clearly stated both the aspects of why the man wanted the equipment. You seem to have an issue with extracting the obvious intention from people’s statements; both Steve’s and mine. Also you seem to want to turn a simple discussion in to some sort of confrontational interplay. Granted it is difficult to interpret intention from text statements, but the meaning and intent is patently clear in these cases. I didn’t have a significant issue with you or your initial statement other than I wanted to point out that in my opinion, I didn’t feel that Steve did, or intended to, mis-represent the deaf man. Simple as that. Now I am sure we both have more important things to do....

Besides the weirdos who don't pick up gear they ordered and deaf people who have no actual use of audio gear with the possible exception of entertaining family and friends there are those who don't use their gear simply because they are musically ignorant. In other words they know little or nothing about music and after spinning a few tunes become bored and question why they even own all that expensive gear. But hey, since it's bought and payed for and impresses the hell out of the Joneses might as well keep it. I'm continuously digging for new music and play my system on a weekly basis but if ever I lose interest some day I'll sell it all off and pick up a mini chain or Sonos, etc and keep the change for something else like traveling. Hey Steve, that would be an interesting subject: Do you find there's less and less good new music out there? Are you afraid the talent well will eventually dry up and we'll be stuck listening to the same old records over and over until we become bored with this hobby? My answer is: At times I fear this might be happening but I always manage to dig up something new or discover something old that had flown under my radar. However lately it's been a bit of a dry spell but I'm optimistic that things will pick up again. And I don't mean remasters, reissues and all that bogus HD audiophile drivel. 100 versions of Sgt Pepper and Kind of Blue are enough for me.
