As an Englishman I would love an Anglo Welsh League now. It would strengthen both nations and give something that would present a more attractive proposition for TV companies (and hence more dosh).

Yeah couldn’t agree more mate. I think it can only be a good thing. Not only TV money too but bigger gates I would imagine too. Cardiff was filled twice this season against Quins and Bath and the atmosphere was great

I wasn’t aware that it was Terry Cobner who turned down the RFU’s offer of five Welsh clubs. And like you say, it was beyond weird that Cobner did turn it down, because it was his recommendation to have only four regional Welsh sides, whilst the WRU originally sanctioned five - the fifth regional team being the Celtic Warriors at Pontypridd. In the long term it would have been ideal for ten Welsh sides in an Anglo Welsh League. But to start things off and gain interest from fans, five Welsh regions would have been great. Baffling decision by Cobner and the WRU. At the time I was living in England, and banter aside, all my rugby loving England fans wanted their clubs to play Welsh teams. Geographically it makes sense, because most of the clubs that play in England and Wales are in the South. For Newport fans it’s probably an easier drive to Bristol, and even Bath, than it is to go to Llanelli. I’d love to see an Anglo Welsh league, because travelling all the way to Leinster, or Edinburgh, is a helluva slog once the novelty wears off

I think Glanmore Griffiths had a big part to play. In the research his name lepta coming up. Whoever there was a requirement for change he was always against it It’s such a shame though. I think the apatite is there from all the fans. We just need the powers that be to sort it out now

Hi Christian, great video , just as Cymru Celt said, I did not know that Terry Cobner turned down the offer from England Rugby. So the fifth would have been the Celtic Warriors. I am a fan of the URC but would a Welsh English league work. I know the main teams are in the South and a lot less travelling to the English teams like Bath and Bristol I can see that benefit. Great as always, catch you soon Take care

Thanks Shaun. Yeah Terry and Galnmore Griffiths were the main 2 guys at the time and they made the decision I defo think it can work and I think the English’s clubs would be up for it if the option was there Hope your well mate 👍🏼

Absolute great video mate. As an English fan I wouldn’t mind welsh teams in especially RGC who I used to watch on a regular basis, however as a supporter of grassroots rugby I believe they will need to start from the bottom and earn the place. I’d say the same if it was any other way.

Thanks mate. Always good to get a non-Welsh perspective on the channel. Unfortunately, because the way the clubs are on, I can’t see them starting down the bottom work the way up. Maybe they could have a situation where three of them replace the three clubs that went bust and then one starts in the championship to try and get promoted. I could see them doing something like that, but I’m not sure the WRU would go for it.

Honestly I think the Welsh regions are far better off in the URC, it’s making them so much more competitive. The question that needs to be asked is why do the WRU hate their best region?
@TheWelshSportsPodcast
25 күн бұрын
Yeah, that’s a good question and they probably embraced regional rugby more than any of the other clubs I don’t agree about the URC though. Yes, the competition is a high standard but the lack of local derbies and just general poor away attendance is an issue in my opinion not just for money but for atmosphere

I remember telling you about this before, it’s frustrating to see how poorly run the WRU is. Loyalty doesn’t run a business, it’s what is best for the fans who are the heartbeat of the sport yet we as clearly told what is best for us. Travel to 🇿🇦 🏴 🇮🇪 and 🇮🇹 instead of travelling a few miles against our old enemy. Football do it, cricket do it and our universities do it, yet the WRU prefer to play teams with little to no history, what are they thinking and they wonder why Rugby spectatorship is declining in Wales. scrum V being scrapped is just another result of all this

Yeah I remember you saying about this. I only found out about it a few months ago and I was shocked and then when doing to research for this vid I was even more shocked tbh It’s crazy how many times WRU have shot themselves in the foot. It like a comedy but no body is laughing 🥹 Hope you enjoy this one as you knew the story anyway?

@@TheWelshSportsPodcast to be fair I think you went into a lot of depth more than what I was aware of, very good video mate. Just a thought, have you thought about doing Rugby in general globally to grow your channel, I think you would do really well tbh, some post match reviews like egg chasers. Anyway back to this, I am hoping the SRC is going to work in wales to bridge the gap between the regions and community game, I do also think an Anglo-Welsh league is a must, I genuinely believe it will reignite so many fans and more tribalism due to more travelling fans, I think it’s the majority answers to our problems, I get frustrated every time I think about it. Keep up the good work though buddy, really enjoying your content 👊🏴

Thank you mate. I have thought about it, but to be honest, the depth of my rugby knowledge outside of Wales is quite limited and I wouldn’t want half ass it I’m trying to act like I know what I’m talking about when I sort of don’t Maybe more of these mini docs that aren’t necessarily involved in Wales in the future, but for now there’s plenty of drama within our borders😂 Currently researching to do another player type video like the Gavin Henson one at the moment Yeah I agree with you and I’m actually really looking forward to the SRC. I was slightly sceptical when they announced the plans originally as we’ve seen so many iterations of new leagues and things like that, but I do genuinely think that this is a good way to bridge the gap and is going to give young players more experience because at the moment the academy players are just not playing enough rugby at the highest level. In my opinion Do you think they’ll broadcast the games?

@@TheWelshSportsPodcast I think they will like they do with the Premiership on S4C but I think coverage will more than likely be sparse unfortunately just the odd game here and there. The kick offs should be alternated too and not all kick off at 14:30 so you can watch multiple games. We shall see how serious the WRU takes it, money has to be thrown at it in order for it to flourish. I like the Pontypool v Cardiff then straight after is Cardiff v Dragons so a double header, that will hopefully bring some hype to it.

Thanks for the video, it filled in a lot of my knowledge gaps due to be too young to know and appreciate the facts. I have been a proponent of a two tiered British and Irish League for years as a way to develop rugby. However, until the WRU loses its woke and naive view of itself then no progress will be achieved. We do not owe the Italians nor the South African teams anything, they should be told to sort their own problems out rather than fluttering their eyelids at us. However, this what happens to organisations governed by directors that regularly change positions within the charity and quango circles doing what is right for their own pockets and self righteousness and not rugby and fans.
@TheWelshSportsPodcast

Appreciate the support, mate👍🏼 Yeah, unfortunately it’s always going to be the same in an organisation like that. do the research it seemed like there was just so many people protecting their own interests. There was so many little anecdotes that I couldn’t even fit them all into the video. Hopefully the new board shapes up and some light at the end of the tunnel and I agree with you we don’t owe Italy or South Africa or anything. At the end of the day we need to look out for what’s best for rugby and Wales at the moment and let everyone else deal with their own problems

A lucky escape from joining a failed league which has seen 1/4 of its teams (Wasps, London Irish & Worcestershire Warriors) go into liquidation in the past three seasons. The Welsh rugby public should embrace the URC and not continually look to join the English Premiership who let’s face it don’t want them.
@TheWelshSportsPodcast
28 күн бұрын
I think that’s a fair point but in that period we also lost the Celtic warriors so it’s not just the league. The only issue with the URC is no away fans tend to travel and stadium gates suffer from the lack of local derbies

I've always despised the name Anglo-Welsh cup, as the English term is an endonym, while the term Welsh is an exonym. It falsely represents who one of the parties involved truly are. It should be either Anglo-British or English-Cymry.

The idea is ultimately a subservient one so hence the name and the people who push it. Wales serves England is the selling point for them

So,the players criticised the old farts at the top for wanting to stay amateur but the game went ahead and became professional.Result in Wales the traditional clubs get screwed and the there isn't enough money to support the system created.Many of the old blokes at the top had a better grasp of financial reality.I am sure fans wouldn't have minded the players at international level getting paid but the wages for normal club players are too high.
