The West Virginia State Capitol Building, has a rich history that spans over a century.
In 1921, Governor Ephraim F. Morgan appointed a Capitol Building Commission to oversee the design and construction of a new state capitol. The commission selected the architectural firm of Cass Gilbert, to design the new Capitol Building.
Gilbert designed a neoclassical structure inspired by the Beaux-Arts architectural style. The design featured a central dome, grand columns, and a symmetrical layout. Construction began in 1924, and the project was completed in 1932.
Over the years, the Capitol Building underwent several renovations and expansions to accommodate the needs of the growing state government. In the 1960s, a new office wing was added, and in 1985, the Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Today, the West Virginia State Capitol continues to serve as the seat of government for the state of West Virginia. It is not only a functional government building but also a historic and architectural landmark.
