You can really see that Charlie's been raised by a WOC cop in this scene. From being the first one to realize something was wrong, attempting to deescalate the situation, and having had categorized all the potential threats in his surroundings (the reference he made to noticing coke the ringleader likely had in his pocket, which means this guy won't be rational if he's high or at the very least doesn't care about breaking the law).

Fun Fact: DC's drinking age was 18 for a really long time. They didn't change it until 1986. If you grew up in the late '80s / '90s, many parents didn't care that much about drinking in high school. My friend used to throw keg parties at his house with his parents permission (Grew up in MD and graduated HS in the '90s). I never understood the Maryland line from Charlie since the drinking age was 21.

Great scene until the agents burst in, guns high yelling Federal Agents! and cuffing and taking away the several guys. It's major escalation by the agents, violated rights, never asked Zoe or her White House pals about the situation, created a media event. Our Guys had just reached the moment when they would have revealed their identities to defuse (hopefully). Writers could have made Charlie a more spectacular protective hero. The press/media or political opposition would have had a great time with the guns-drawn no-rights hustle-away. I still like watching first 2/3. Bliocranioster January 2024.

+arbitterm In Maryland, minors are (still) permitted in bars so long as the kitchen is open. And she wasn't fetching the drink, she went to find out what had happened to the order and watch it being made. In Washington DC, this is also the case unless the area is specifically marked off as forbidden to people under 21. Virginia doesn't have any place designated as a "bar"--all places that serve alcohol must get some of their revenue from food. In all cases, under-21s are prohibited from sitting at the bar itself, but we could thread the needle a little and note that she was standing, not sitting.

Michael O'Connor _The Newsroom was awesome, but it wasn't nearly as good as The West Wing._ You're correct, of course, for 2 major reasons (for me): 1. *_The Newsroom_* only had 3 Seasons, while *_The West Wing_* had 7. 2. *_The Newsroom_* prioritized way too much on personal stories, while *_The West Wing_* concentrated much more on the workings of the President, White House, Congress and the Supreme Court. If *_The Newsroom_* had dispensed with 90% of that personal romance and expanded a lot more for each "news cycle", it would have been much better and probably would have had more seasons -- there was never a shortage of really good news stories.
@cardsfanboy
7 жыл бұрын
The West Wings best seasons were 1-3... Newsroom had a shorter season, so it should have been able to ensure each episode was of a higher quality, but it failed. It was great, but compared to The West Wing and Sports Night, it's a distant third among Sorkin shows. (Don't get me wrong I loved the Newsroom...the argument that they made that sometimes there is one side to a story, sometimes two, sometimes more is fantastic realistic take on the news.... but their story lines were just too cute to be enjoyable, especially after the first season)

And in that moment all got arrest records when they were in close contact with the first daughter, threatening an aide, two deputies in the president’s counsel, and making threats. In addition some may be carrying drugs and the implication is also seen they may have been shown resisting arrests. I do not see a bright future for th we guys when employers ask if they have ever been arrested.

@@blackbird5634 I encourage you to watch the episode where they decide to hire Charlie. He is chosen for a role that is for esteemed young people, who academically excel and are of the highest character. Leo even asks Admiral Fitzwallace, a well-respected, high-ranking black man, if hiring Charlie would paint the wrong picture, to which the Admiral responds “are you gonna pay him a fair wage and treat him with respect in the workplace?” When Leo answers yes, the Admiral says “then what the hell do I care?” Charlie is the furthest thing from a token character, and, despite the unique vocabulary you’ve used, I urge you to retract that statement.

@@blackbird5634 it was a character asking another character if hiring a young black man to wait on the President looked wrong, to which both men said no. Yes, there were times in the show where racism was prevalent (Leo in Isaac and Ishmael) & an elitist attitude was present (Josh multiple times), but when it comes to Charlie & Bartlet they had a wonderful relationship. Just my opinion though 🤷♂️

After BLM and George Floyd, I see Charlie's strategy in a new light. He's deescalating the situation, not trying to get into a fight, trying to be friendly and buy the guys a round, even when the guys are using racist language against him, because he's one black guy (probably the only black guy in the entire bar) against three white guys, and his mother got shot at a routine traffic stop like less than a year ago. So when he says he's having a good time, it's not him being petty or quippy. He really means it.

Despite all the jokes, if a group of men surround you at a public place, get the hell out of there. They might be friendly, but it’s a huge red flag and get out in any way possible with any excuse that you can find. When I saw them surround Zoe, I knew immediately that there was something wrong and she didn’t realize that she was in a dangerous situation.
