This is one of the saddest parts of Hitchhiker's Guide. One of the only characters in the entire series that genuinely was excited about life dies seconds after being brought into existance.

I think that kind of summaries the whole show. No one’s life is going where they wanted it to and the whale is the only one blessed with enough ignorance to not realise it.

2:22, I know why the bowl of petunias was called into that particular position... luck. Bad luck, specifically. Look closely. Closer... CLOSER!.... THERE! Do you see? It has THIRTEEN flowers. Definitely a very unlucky amount of petunia flowers to have, don't you know? It should have been working on opening a 14th flower, then it might have been saved from its fate to fall to its SPLAT! Yes, like the whale, it was called into being to fulfill the great SPLAT! requirement of unlucky things.OH The BOTANINTY! (humanity except for plants) Why oh why could it not open a 14th flower in time!?!? Guess that was just... its bad luck, right? heheheheheh

FUN FACT: After completing work on “Anastasia”, director Don Bluth showed interest in making a hand-drawn animated feature based on “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” with his short-lived studio Fox Animation Studios, when 20th Century Fox briefly had the film rights. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of the idea and Bluth and the studio were given the task of making “Titan A.E.”, an animated sci-fi film which, curiously enough, also began with the destruction of planet Earth by aliens, but in a much more serious way.

I'd argue that the whale represents the emergence of consciousness and being aware of one's imminent demise followed by the confusion and panic of that. The Guide is such a fascinating, brilliant, and insightful piece of work. Embrace Paradox and don't let the dichotomous mind cause you to panic.. or don't! 😄 ✊🌀✋

In the U.S. in 1978, we got the trimmed-to-allow-for-ads version of the first 13 episodes on NPR. I recorded it all on cassette. The music was different than what came out in the CD release three decades later, as there were copyright issues. When Our Heroes explored Magrathea, stepping over the bits of whale meat, they did so to a bit of the intro to Pink Floyd "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", and Arthur comments "Did you know that robot can hum like Pink Floyd?" For the extra point, Marvin also spews Chuck Berry in a Beatles cover. These are missing from the CD. See also: h2g2.com/edited_entry/A32873899

Spoiler: Arthur Dent, using the Improbability Drive, kept reincarnating some dude who due explicitly to Arthur Dent reincarnating him, would very quickly die soon afterwards. Him being reincarnated in to a bowl of petunias was one of its many lives to (shortly) suffer. So as it fell, its only reaction to the surprisingly improbable event was simply "Oh no, not again."
