It’s a very realistic movie to me. I’ve met people who act like how his daughter did and have family members who are overweight. Brendan is going to get the Oscar. The score was incredible too.

I enjoyed this film for the acting and performances! The story is simple and short. Despite the makeup, to create a realism, which allowed Frazier to play this role, it worked well enough to tell the story. The emotional element of the narrative was rather strong and felt throughout the film. Brendan deserves the recognition he is receiving for his acting in this film.

The body horror aspects were appropriate and not prejudiced or "freak-showy". They were indicative of Charlie's inner hell.I somehow found the movie visually beautiful as well. Brendan Fraser was arresting in almost every single breath on screen. Unbelievable commitment. The script in parts wreaked of elementary film student-level writing.Sady sink & missionary characters were frankly of very poor quality and needed rewrites and better performances.

So I watched your review twice. We agree that the acting was exquisite all around. My favorite was Hong Chou's nurse. I loved the bite she brought to the character, but, in my opinion, it wasn't only Chou's doing. Samuel D. hunter had to write a Mormon-hating character who performs good deeds as unconsciously as breathing, and then Darren had to give that character space to breath. You hint at this a few times, but Darren is one of those guys who wants you to realize how brilliant he is while watching his films, yet The Whale sidesteps that burden. I forget why exactly I rated Mother a 9/10 instead of a 10/10, but it had something to do with Aronofsky thematically winking at the audience in the last 30 seconds in a way that undercut any chance of the film feeling substantial and genuine. He's usually like that, willing to sacrifice exploration of deeper themes for fanciful gimmicks, in my opinion, but, other than the fat suit (which you hated), there were no 'look at me' flourishes here. And really, the fat suit plays to Fraser's hand, not Aronofsky's. Also, I think directors should always get credit for good acting in their movies, especially when every performance is this powerful. A mediocre director can sabotage a good actor by giving misguided direction. Hitchcock said it, 'actors are cattle'. And so it follows, a good director can enable an average actor to amazing heights. Darren's subtle direction was masterful as far as I'm concerned. One thing I think you missed: you didn't buy Fraser's character arc. I don't think his character had an arc. Everything about him is on display from the beginning: he's a broken person who revels in sacrificing himself for others. The character who is revealed, or has an arc, is his daughter. Up until the last scene all her actions can be viewed as cruel and self serving. What's revealed in the film's ending is her ability to accept his sacrifice. In other words, she's the heart of the film, not him. Or... Darren made the movie because he identifies with the smartass little girl, not the fatso father.

I found this movie to be riding on the tallest horse I've ever seen. It takes itself so seriously it's like the dryest snob going "Now THIS is ART" while acting like they get it. Incredibly slow, very boring. I found the characters unbelievable, or at the very least totally unrelatable, and the movies puts out questions of interests, that it then doesn't answer, like: Is she really just an asshole, or is there more to it? It points strongly in a certain direction, but maybe we'll be surprised by an interaction later?! ...Nah, we'll leave that, together with everything else, on a sort of cliffhanger. "You decide, that's TRUE art." ...Bullshit. Pandering to all sides, is pandering to noone. You're supposed to care about the main character? How? He's an naive idiot hanging on to his own beliefs so hard he'll rather die than take action. Not to talk about how selfish he is. Jesus. For me, I was thoroughly let down by this artsy partsy, and for any and everyone I recommend you watch The Wrestler, Black Swan, Requiem for a dream, or the Fountain instead. Darren Aronofsky has made some of the best movies out there, but this one.. nope. My five cents! Oh, and unrelated to the movie: I love Brendan Fraser, he deserves all and everything good, and I hope he gets it. ❤

I had seen six movies in the last weeks that all been subpar or "okay" at best. I then went to see The Whale at the cinema. I didn't really know what to expect more than a big Brendan Fraser. I must say that I did like the movie and more so than any of the six others I previously seen. It is not a fun movie even though there is some lighthearted moments. The acting is overall great. It is not a movie for everyone. If you just want a fun time and a good two hours. This isn't it but it could be a good wake up call for someone who is big. I am quite big myself and did this make me think (in a positive way). I would probably rate it 7 / 10 or thereabouts. I am glad it has gotten some attention!
@AndreasLovely

The actors definitely did some very heavy lifting in this movie. The script overall just didn't have any real depth as you rightly pointed out. But Frasier, Sink, and Chau gave such good performances I actually went back and watched certain scenes again. Upon further reflection this film stands as a testament to how sentimentality can cloud one's better judgment. Frasier is so convincing as he is hysterically crying "you are amazing, you are amazing" and we the audience cry along with him. But once the sentimentality runs its course you can't help but look back on the script and see it for what it is. I'm actually wondering now if the film is purposefully manipulating us emotionally with the same shallow sentimentality and appeal to pity that The Whale uses to corral those around him. Is there a metatextual element here or is the script really just this basic? Or maybe the point is that by the end of the film we all sympathize with The Whale when really we shouldn't. An ultra-hedonistic, selfish, self-serving glutton who sacrifices himself and the wellbeing of his daughter... for nothing. For meatball subs and television. And in the end ascends up to the heavens like an angel. Maybe there is a commentary here on our own hedonistic and anemic culture, where weakness and victimhood are glorified? I may be overthinking this. But towards the end of the film I was tearing up and I felt somewhat manipulated by the whole experience. I just wonder if that was intentional or not on the part of the filmmakers.

I loved the film and yet I agree with Maggie here. The directing and performances are great but the script misses valuable opportunities to explore the protagonist in depth. Surely his actions and ideas are there, as it is his auto destructive path, but I wanted to see rage and darkness for a film that unfolds as a tragedy. This is a character that deals with lots and lots of pain, guilt and regret yet he’s always sweet and goodhearted , despite his suffering .

Another quality and detailed review. I agree that the performances elevate what was otherwise a fairly straightforward premise. This isn't an uplifting film, and I took no pleasure in it. Quite the contrary that there are times when I cringe at the actions of one or more of the characters. Each has their own flaws. In a world that is so big, this movie takes place in such a small and limited apartment with very little change in itinerary. A nice bounce back performance for Fraser and gets him back into the talk show circuit. I saw on the big screen, and didn't feel like it added enough to merit having spent the money. Streaming would be fine.

It definitely felt like a play, but.. not a good play. Like a high school play where you have one genuinely great actor who will go on to pursue it as a career.. and then a bunch of teenagers trying their best to keep up. Dialogue felt overwritten and awkward, too, which took a lot of the emotion out of it for me. When you have two different across in two different scenes both yelling "I just don't understand you!", your movie is telling way more than showing and is not trusting its audience. Brendan was great, tho, and I look forward to more from him. (Although anyone who says he already owns the Oscar, hasn't seen Banshees yet.)
