Hodgson tried his hand at a recurring "psychic detective" character and, as with Blackwood's John Silence, never quite achieved the charisma of the traditional great detective characters of the era. I wish someone had.
I'm not a fan of the denouement, but the centerpiece is uniquely horrible enough to be worth the price of admission.
