It was so easy to dismiss Daphne in the first few episodes but Meghan Fahy brings so much depth to the character from just the smallest movements of her face and eyes...when she finds out about Harper and Cam's tryst...she goes through about 10 emotions in 5 seconds with such subtlety. 7:07 I also love how a clever costume choice shows what a character is thinking in this show. Here Portia is wearing an Audrey Hepburn shirt in the scene where Albi explains his disagreement with “traditional” male and female dynamics as they are shown in The Godfather. Her wearing that shirt, with an old Hollywood icon shows a connection with this more traditional dynamic in how strong, assertive men are attractive to her-which we see play out latter in the show.

Or the first shots of Daphne and Cameron v Ethan and Harper. E + H are dressed in completely different ways; he’s dressed, young, miss-matched, disheveled but cool. She’s dressed from an older time, clean tailored lines, pressed and polished. Both look styles, but their styles don’t coordinate. C + D look straight out of a catalogue. They don’t look matchy-matchy, but they could have brought all their cloths and accessories from the same designer. At first this reads like C+D are on the same page, while E+H are not. But maybe it means that E+H allow each other to be themselves, while C+D feel the need to sacrifice their own tastes to conform to expectations. The more I watched, the more I felt like Harper was insecure with the new money, and bought a whole wardrobe for this trip, because the clothes never feel like her, especially at the start. While Ethan is still wearing the same t shirts and jeans he had before he made money. The other two probably already had a rich person’s vacation wardrobe at the ready, but of course topped it off with some pieces of from the latest seasons.

This season I noticed something involving actress Jennifer Coolidge. Mike White, likely wanting to give this phenomenal actress a grand send off, seemed to frame her in many scenes in beautiful tableau. It was a subtle shift from her early moments this season as big and brash as we joyously remember her, but as her sad storyline progressed, she was consistently framed on screen with pretty lighting, placement, angles, and music. From the moment of her true first conversation with Quentin, and the way he and the other men welcomed her and made her feel adored, Jennifer Coolidge looked radiant in her scenes compared to her more comedic blocking from prior episodes. At the end of the opera scene where she is seated between the curtains and the camera is tracking away from her slowly, created such loving sadness. I ached for her as she ached for Madame Butterfly. Jennifer Coolidge totally deserves these moments of beauty. I will miss her character so much!

They were all fantastic, but Daphne was definitely my favorite. All the characters are telling us a deeper story in their reactions, yet Meghan Fahy has two roles to play at once. She is playing Daphne, yet Daphne herself is also expertly playing the well seasoned role of "carefree, bullet-proof happy housewife". Fahy masterfully lands both roles so authentically. There are so many amazing subtle moments with Happy Housewife Daphne that cue something deeper and make you wonder what's going on with her. Is she for real? is she a sociopath? is she just a fantastic actress? One of my favorite things about the Daphne character and the way Fahy played her and White wrote her is if you watch closely, see how many times she talks about death and murder ... but she does it in this friendly chatty flippant way that you don't even really notice the first time around.

I'd like to see a video on how they did a bait and switch with Albi where they made him out like he was going to be a white knight and Portia seemed like she was going to lead Albi on instead they both ended up being pretty flawed, but okay people. Also audience perception because it's wild how people still criticize Albi for being a "good guy" but Valentina did all of trademarks of the manipulative good guy and you never hear a word about it. I think it's because from the beginning he was set into that role and when he ended up being a dorky college student people couldn't change their perception, it was already set in stone.

This was an awesome video & great analysis. However I felt that Portia's reactions to Albie suggested that she was genuinely attracted to him, but that he was too timid/too much of a white knight to keep her interested. For example when he kisses her, the context shows that she actually was interested in hanging out more, but that the way he asked to kiss her, and then left to his room immediately after, was a turn off to her. Specifically, Portia had just finished telling Albie about Tanya's tragic backstory, so when Albie asked to kiss her at that moment it was super awkward. And Portia confiding in Albie shows she would have wanted to keep hanging out, and maybe they could have kissed at a more natural juncture after getting to talk more, if he had just asked to go into her room. Portia says this to him the next day, and she also says to Tanya that Albie "didn't get her heartrate up enough" at another point, showing she would have been interested in Albie if he didn't fumble the bag.

Yes it's amazing how they were able to visualy portrait all these different levels of feelings and that's a combo script, the director in charge of the filming and the actors. But I feel Harper showed mostly distaste in such an obvious/grandiose way that I couldn't believe that the rest of them got fooled by her fake smile. It was for me too extreme and didn't sold me how her fakeness was supposed to be believable for the other couple. I felt very uncomfortable watching it let alone if I would be in her presence. The stories are intreguing especially the given context of the power dynamics interpersonal as societal but we can see that in many movies and series as its a tale as old as time. It's defenatly the visualisation of these complex feelings people struggle with that absolutely captures us. It is amazingly well done. It made me cry a few times as it felt so emotionally penetrating. The moment of Daphne just shown in this fragment here 14:54 made me tear up again even tho we don't feel very much connected to these characters as we see mostly toxity from them, hance not forming a very empathic connection for the characters, it's that human moment of that pain in that we can not hide away from. So powerfully done.

To me, Valentina does not share what her sexuality is with ANYONE. So, when Mia comes to her and says what she says so directly, Valentina is in shock. Mia has just seen directly through Valentina to a very vulnerable part of her. This part of Valentina is very secret and fragile to herself, hence the lip tremble when Mia pierces right through her to it. Or maybe it’s a mix of both excitement and fear! :)

That scene between him and Bert at the dinner table where he says he is the way he is because of him was brilliant, one of my favorite scenes of the entire show.

I feel like her (Aubrey plaza) breaths and slow storytelling when Ethan is trying to get her to tell the truth is her way of buying time to think of a story.

Just did a rewatch and Meghan F's reaction shot on the beach is possibly one of the best performances of all time.

I really appreciate your observations. Subtle acting can be so overlooked with all the focus on blockbusters and fast food series ^^

My favourite bit was the way the woman seduced the manageress into getting to play piano. She was so seductive and persuasive in her Italian and expressions.

the scene where the di grasso family are about to leave to explore sicily just before they get into the car really stuck out to me …i think it’s when the father and grandfather saw albie talking to lucia cos he planned to bring her with …the father and grandfather both looked at the scene of them talking ,rolled they’re eyes ,sighed, and turned around at the same time …that acting really stuck out to me cos the actors really make you believe that they are father and son as the grandfathers mannerisms is shown buy his son as he rolled his eyes and turned away at the same time …it’s just so smart and crazy that actors can capture things that normally happen subconsciously

These videos make my day. Literally jumped out of excitement when I saw you had posted this, just watched it on my work break. By the way why do you never mention the tanya storyline? Do you think it's the weakest one of the season? And to answer your question, I honestly have no idea! The whole thing was a masterpiece it's hard to choose a favorite, I'm constantly impressed with the whole thing every time I see parts of it again, can't choose
