My first white stout was Faction Anomaly (a local brewery for me). Had a door dasher picking up Firestone Merlin but they got it mixed up because of the silver can I guess? Then I discovered Dragon's Milk white. Was already a fan of standard dark one. Good Stuff!

A very happy accident I would say! I've seen them getting more popular in Europe recently so I hope they begin making a comeback in the states.

Excellent video! I've always been curious about white stouts as I think I can count on two hands the amount of white stouts I've drank in over 10 years of enjoying craft brews. Just cracked one that came in a collaboration 4 pack that some smaller Chicagoland breweries released for Valentine's Day. Made me wonder "Has anyone done a history of the white stout on KZitem?" and this video popped up. Very informative. The first white stout I had was Pipeworks' "Careful Man! There's a Beverage Here!" years ago when they first released it. I remember thinking the term "white stout" was a joke even as I was drinking it!!! I feel like the style is a rarity as I seldom see them when I visit breweries and craft bottle shops around the Chicagoland.

Glad this video found its way to you my friend. I my personal opinion, I really enjoy the white stout and am sad to hear its been fading out of obscurity in recent times. Interestingly I was just in the Czech Republic and was pleased to find double digit offerings of white stout from Czech craft breweries. It gives me hope the style may somehow live on even if the American craft beer scene leaves it behind.

Great one. I never knew (or even thought) about the origin of white stout. Had one that a local brewery did some years ago and it was quite nice.

Haha yeah! I love the idea of this thing being so unique yet so often over looked because of people's issues with it. Which is why my next episode on the white stout is going to be about whether or not it is a beer style or not!

Interesting style! Do you know if there's any commercial example of where they remove all the roasted barley and replace it with flaked - keeping everything else equal? Personally I would find that style more appealing, rather than trying to achieve something in the territory of a Golden Ale

I don't personally know of any but I wouldn't be surprised if it did exist. I've had a wide range of flavors and mouth feels in the white stout category so it certainly seems plausible. Luckily there is plenty of experimentation going on with white stouts right now so go nuts!

NEIPAs look more stouty than these "white stouts". You can't see through a good stout, you can't see through a NEIPA but I can see through this. I guess it's all in the taste.

Not a fan of the white stout, if I'm going to stan for a gimmicky beer style, I'm going to stan for the Brut IPA.

You lost me at traditional beer styles being "archaic, outdated, and rigid"

If I remember correctly, I more so meant the guidelines in which we refer to classic styles. Not a lot of room for expression or experimentation before we break through those boundaries
