Wait. Entwistle is great and arguably the musical glue since Keith was more about the fills but at a live show, it’s Pete, Roger and Keith with 99% of the visible energy. Entwistle couldn’t have made himself any more invisible with that blacked out suit. The comments of every Who live show points out this apparent disrespect to Entwistle but it seems to me it suited him just fine to lay back in the dark and put down the groove. There’s no I in team people. Or in The Who. They’re phenomenal, particularly in this era, in my opinion, where they were raw and tight at the same time.

I'll try and explain this the best way I can: In music over the centuries there are these little snippets of pure magic that would dwarf the drivel of which we hear in a lot of modern pop culture today. That chord and vocal change at 1:47 ("And we have eternal life and Never die") is one of those moments. Some of you may understand where I'm coming from with this and some of you won't of course......

Best concert lead-off song ever? 1) It rocks! 2) It's a classic Who curveball, with John singing first! How many bands would dare have their third singer start a concert? 3) Because it's John's song, it so well reflects the balance/tension within the band, with its multiple songwriters and singers, with John's preeminent musicianship, Roger's insecurities (although he was coming into his own quite nicely at this point), Pete fitting in.

I never noticed the reverse crowd scene at the beginning. That's strange. I love the little things in the DVD; That cymbal mute at 3:25 here is just genius by Keith, his necklace that says "My Name Is Brandy", John getting smacked by a whirling Roger mike, Pete cranking up the Hiwatt amp on this song's solo, Pete complaining about having to tune up on stage. The purchace was worth every penny. The Who were the best here; the band at their summit.

It's very hard to tell from the DVD because of the heavy editing but John looks OK in the first song but later, maybe during Summertime Blues, he's got a nasty gash on his nose. I've never heard Roger's mike swishing around like I can in this DVD as he swings it past the cymbals. There's also a great scene of a roadie trying to replace the right bass drum head mid song while Keith pounds away. He was probably the best drummer I ever saw. Anaheim Stadium 1970, the year I graduated High School.

Man, you said it. I'm 20 years old and I feel the exact same way. Fuck the Internet and all the things we have now that we didn't then. I'd give 'em all up if I could see the Who live in 1970. If there's one band these days that has a live "experience" that's comparable, it's Robert Randolph & the Family Band. They're a bit far removed from the Who, but they're still fantastic. That being said, the Who will live forever as long as people still listen to their music.
