Director Busby Berkeley once pushed Judy Garland to a nervous breakdown by constantly shouting at her to open her eyes more on camera - he didn't have anything to say about her performance, just how wide her eyes needed to be. I was surprised to see Marilyn Monroe on here. I suppose sometimes, she definitely widened her eyes for that innocent look, but most of the time (from my viewing), they're at least half closed, sometimes more, in a seductive manner...in images anyway. I haven't watched her in a lot of movies, and I wasn't analysing her eyes when watching the ones I did see. But I definitely think of her as an eyes half closed person. EDIT further into the video: Wait, does wide-eyed mean horizontal distance across the face? I thought it meant vertical distance of them open. I'm really not sure now. The Disney waist comparison makes it seem like width. I've never really noticed width but vertical height. I suppose they're related. If you go by horizontal distance, they could just be far apart and still small that they wouldn't have that innocent look though.

I at first thought the exact opposite of your assumption, and after having watched the video, I think the contention is a bit of both. I would guess casting agents who are looking for 'wide-eyed' actresses would also tend to look for those whose eyes are set far apart, as that is a naturally aesthetically pleasing feature in anybody.

To be fair to anime the large eyes come from.manga which took from American cartoons which used it to better get expression. The big eyes are largely used for that reason to day, it is easier to get emotional expression across drawing large eyes.
@eveyk.1204

Big eyes ane wide eyes are two different things. They shouldn't be compared. Big eyes are desirable and make you look innocent whether they are close or wide eyed. For example Amanda Seyfried doesn't have that wide eyed features but her eyes are gorgeous because they are big. Wide eyes can be big ( like Anya Taylor Joy) or small ( like Halle Bayley). But personally i don't like wide eyes. They look too unnatural. The fact that Anya Taylor Joy and Jenna Ortega are considered pretty is because their eyes are really big, not because they are wide eyed.

well now the wide eyed thing doesnt only apply to the female actresses/characters anymore. you have male actors like rami malek and lee je hoon who also have that similar natural beauty as the actresses mentioned above. plus that wide eyed aspect about them is also deconstructed in their series mr robot and taxi driver. Rami as elliot is depicted as beautiful and cute especially bc of his eyes and the trauma he goes through throughout the series would make us want to hug him and care for him even more, trust i was one of them. but time and time again elliot proved himself to be capable of defending himself, use his intelligence and wit to survive and beat the villains at their own game, especially those who viewed him as a defenseless scrawny kid in a hoodie. Same goes for Je Hoon as Kim Doki in Taxi Driver. At first he begun as a wide eyed naive ARMY young man but after his mom's murder, he unlocked his much darker and bolder side in order to take down his enemies, especially after becoming a deluxe taxi driver. though he does use his doe-eyed angelic beauty to his advantage when doing his disguises to throw off the villains: especially as a mild-mannered substitue teacher, everyman nerdy employee at a corrupt corporation, a country bumpkin.

What I noticed thus far is that there's a higher ratio skews towards eyes that one can see the whites of the eye around the iris. All the way way around, or at least on the bottom, even when the person isn't 'widening their eyes deliberately as if in shock.' . Some eyes, like my own, are smaller and so you can't see the whites underneath my iris, and only see such at the top when I deliberately and noticeably widen my eyes. . The difference seems to be a factor in whether or not someone looks "wide-eyed" or not, regardless of eye size. Also, whether or not their eyes are deep-set or hooded, as that can result in drooping eyelids that hide eyes that might've otherwise looked bigger and more open (aka wide-eyed).

As a wide-eyed gal, I've had positive and negative experiences. An old boss said I had "Bambi eyes" as an insult, implying I was a bit thick. A friend of mine called me "frog eyes" as a kid which was an actual joke, I wasn't offended. Many people have at least one prominent feature. The trick is to make the best of it!

I mean it makes sense. Eyes are expressive, so the you can see on film the more expressive an actor/actress can get. Though the list thing is weird. Really, really weird.

Pretty much everything in Hollywood a trope. There was a reason that Hollywood is often referred to as "The Dream Factory", because people for the most part stopped going to the movies to see "real life" a long time ago. The number of actresses given as examples of this particular trope was so across the board, a list of actresses in Hollywood that didn't fit this trope would have a lot more useful, because some of the women you showed appeared to have perfectly normal eyes. Notwithstanding that the majority of successful actresses already tend to have won the genetic lottery in the first place.

To this day I am still told I look just like Winona Ryder. Also been told I look like a cartoon. I never knew how to take that but I know it’s because of my very large widest eyes and baby face. My eyes are my favorite feature. However people guess me way younger than my age (30) which is slightly creepy when they are disappointed that I’m not 22…

@@blackguyofthesouth2161 katie holmes character in Dawson's Creek is described and referred to several times as having 'doe eyes' in the series. Also, Katie Holmes DOES have big gorgeous eyes - are you blind? (Pun intended). Ok, they've mentioned Lydia, but it is known that Winona's make up was done in a way to make her eyes even bigger. Hello! It is a Tim Burton's movie, so any female character is gonna have big eyes anyway. Just mention the actress (Winona), who is known for her naturally big eyes. Regarding Sydney... yeah, try again big boy 😂😂😂😂

If you haven't already, can you PLEASE do a video of the Black Best Friend "Phenom" and how gratuitous, counterproductive, and harmful it is, even when done in "Black" movies? BBF type in White media: Rochelle in "The Craft" (SO disturbing!) BBF type in Black media: various characters in a Tyler Perry or Kenya Barris production

as for me it's not the big eyes of the "baby schema (Kindchenschema)"more the "Betty Davis eyes" of her later movies. i haven't photoshopped the eyes of Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone and Anna Taylor Joy, but I think their eyes ( actually the center of the iris) seem to be nearer of further apart than they would be in a woman of conventional beauty.

um anime being pedophilic is not uncommon but the one piece example made me smile since oda wrote some of the most interesting women in anime he just gives them 4 body types child (short rectangular shape) woman (tits small waist ass) fat (pear shape) and old (similar to child but wrinkly) and also there are waay more problematic animes than op on that front imo
