I actually loved the story in the first one. The fact that the dragon was actually named, grigori, and he confronts you multjple times but says you arent reqdy yet basically, the fact the duke knows the whole time the truth of the dragon, then the fact it was the character you beat the game with last time thats the senechal now?! It was a beautiful realixation of the whole cyclical nature fantasy

I disagree about the graphics being as bad as you say lol. The lighting, textures, and gameplay animations are objectively generational leaps beyond Dragon’s Dogma 1, however the stiff animations and horrible lip syncing during conversations don’t help its case. The world is gorgeous and 50 hrs in I still say “wow” every time I approach Vernworth from afar. The game is flawed but it’s the most fun I’ve had since Elden Ring and one of the best games I’ve ever played 🥲. So happy I ignored the hysteria.

@@fallasleep9472 I said the lighting, textures and animations are generational leaps beyond the first and that is the objective truth. My opinion is that the game is gorgeous stylistically. Elden Ring is more colorful as you said but it’s also a fantasy setting whereas DD2 is realistic and grounded (in setting). It wouldn’t even make sense for DD2 to contain the variety that Elden Ring does.

A question about the "surprise drop." Like have you played a Capcom game in the last 7 years? Literally, they put mtx in devil may cry and re4, why won't they put them in dd2 when the original had them in the first place?

Regarding the story, I think the game leaned too heavily on the side quest content and doubled it down. If you rush the main story (It is allowed by the game, of course), it is a shallow story. The story energy is spread out to the side quests instead, with some very interesting side quest links, IMO. Like, if you do the rescue mission on Melve before it was locked down by the soldiers, the brothers you helped will lure the guards out from the 4 swords you need to fetch. Some quests also spans two major areas and tease you on how to escort NPCs as painlessly as possible. The game never TELLS you how to do it, but you can: NPCs you Grab will fast travel with you when you use the ferrystone. Some sidequests also require obtusely interesting solutions like keep dodging and don't hit the angry NPCs, at all. Or carry a fragile vase to a very far spot, Monster Hunter egg delivery quest style. I think they're so aware about this, the end credits will show the fates of the NPCs from the major quest lines. For example, if you finish the Wilhelmina quest, she'll appear as one of the credit ending scenes. For better or worse, the game's story is about how much you care and want to engage with the world or not, in particular the side quests. As for interesting lore, many of them are pretty smartly hidden in plain sight. If you notice it, the NPCs that give you the Arisen-exclusive Vocations, namely Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster and Warfarer, these NPCs are former Arisens before you that are still alive. The Magick Archer one is pretty surprising since I don't think she has any lines caring about dragons or any Arisen thingies. She is just happy with her dwarf hubby.

Combat is amazing. However, enemy variety (espescially no Drake variants), endboss and true-endboss being downgrades from DD1, music being so meh compared to DD1, the random walking pawns auto-talking to you making you stop and 180 and waste time with no way to turn off in settings, and the MTX being not just pointless but I'd argue an actuall scam, is so many needless L's.

Excellent review, and I agree with you on almost all points. However, the graphics aren't as bad as you make them out to be. The characters are, sure, but the environments are breathtakingly beautiful - the graphics may just be acceptable, given the generation, but art design and lighting do wonders around every corner in this game. (Still, there's no reason why 60 fps aren't possible.) The original was severely lacking in in enemy variety, too, and I played the hell out of it. With DD2, I'm at a whopping 400 hours, and finally my addiction has settled down a bit. A handful of enemies and bosses, placed at exactly the same spots on the map - that should be a death knell for a game that's so focused on traversal, so why the heck did it take 400 hours to make me finally eject the disc and play something else? I've no idea, but just like its predecessor, the game seems to be doing something other games don't. Is there a reason why you didn't mention the Dragonsplague?

They're excellent at dynamic world and combat but they did nothing with it .____. story so bad, the 70% of the map is inaccessible, it is very lineal and you can't go much more further of the roads, the same monsters and the same encounters it just get boring... they could've done such a masterpiece but they went halfway... such a waste

Shooters and action RPGs are different genres, with different gameplay loops that provide entertainment in different ways. I wouldn't know if people complain about enemy variety in CoD because I don't play CoD. I play action RPGs, and if the combat encounters were repeated this often in The Witcher, or a Soulslike, or any other series where dynamic combat is a main gameplay focus... yeah, people would point it out.

That comparison is absurd. In a shooter, 3-4 enemy types works because you can use the environment and compositions of different enemies to make a much more varied experience. Goblins throwing rocks at you then jumping into melee from narnia, gets old very very fast. Regardless if you combine it with a lizard or two poking you with a stick, there is effectively no variety. Battahl is slightly better due to mob density, but that just means 15 Hobgoblins, 7 Knackers, 3 Venin Harpies, 6 Redwolves, 12 assorted Bandits a Grimogre and a random ass Griffin divebombing into the shitshow. But after the 2'nd time that happens it just gets annoying cuz it is the same identity.

@@SwedetasticGames You can use different skills and the environment in DDII when fighting enemies. Each fight is dynamic in DDII especially as other enemies can join in and other NPC's, each fight is unique if the enemies are familiar.

I don't hate this game. I hate what's been done to it. In the name of greed. It felt like the experience and vision for this game was deliberately sabotaged. And or altered. To protect Capcop's. Golden child Monster Hunter. By testing out this Unreal Engine. And listing all the bugs any issues. Another words Dragon's Dogma 2 was made into. A sacrificial lamb.( But that's just my theory).

They just didn’t put a lot of resources in it compared to other titles because they weren’t sure how it would sell. It doesn’t mean it was sabotaged. Just basic economics why put resources into a low return product when you know if it went elsewhere it would have a guaranteed way higher return
