I'm actually not sure where to start with this one. First of all, saying that it feels weird that they found Donnie then countering with "the show explains this later" isn't really a good argument. Throughout the series, legal issues like "has Darwin had his inoculations" "we need to pick up the visas" and "having the continuation of legally fostering Donnie continued" is mentioned here and there - but if it were randomly inserted into episodes, it would be out of place. The show does discuss these things. Second, Donnie doesn't speak "cave speak". He speaks in gibberish. Donnie can't talk to animals and his parents died before he could learn to speak, so he just articulates by spouting gibberish. There is literally zero reason Eliza should understand this when she can only talk to animals on top of her native tongue (After all, she can only speak one human language - English, which Donnie doesn't know yet. It's referenced many times that they're teaching him, but he only knows a few words.) I'll admit too that I disagree on the tone, though I agree that a lot of early episodes have too much more of a focus on goofy antics than on the messages they're trying to include. This vastly improved later on. Basically, early episodes lack the focus that they managed to acquire later on. Eliza had a personality beyond "I want to help animals". She was hyper, always had to be the leader, always had to be right, but cared about animals and her family enough to literally put her life at risk for them (nothing showcases this better than the movie, but the show does a good job usually). I do get you about Eliza's parents letting her run off in the jungle (which is inconsistent throughout the series and at its worst in season 1) but I will say, plot's gotta plot, yo. I do appreciate that the series tried to find better ways around that later on, but I still get you on it for many many episodes. The Wild Thornberrys wasn't a perfect series (this coming from someone who easily admits this was my favorite cartoon growing up and still loves it now) - the finale is terrible, Debbie's voice change in the last season is grating (yes, I know it was Danielle Harris throughout the series, but they made her exaggerate the valley accent so annoyingly in the last season for some reason), some episodes are either bad or just not up to par, and the series retcons the origins behind Eliza's powers. But this review seems to rely more on nitpicks than actual criticism. And please don't take that the wrong way. No one has to love this show like I do or at all, but it saddens me to see this show get so little appreciation beyond Nigel memes (though, yes I love those too. Nigel is amazing). The Wild Thornberrys offered so much that gets overlooked. It was heavily researched. It taught about animals (maybe I'm weird, but humanizing them didn't hinder my learning about them or appreciating them as wild animals - the idea behind humanizing them was to help humans realize they weren't better for being more evolved), it taught geography, it showcased multiple cultures without ever drawing attention to the fact that they were doing so, it taught conservation (without being preachy) and taught about poachers, it had the only good, non-stereotyped representation of homeschooling that I've seen in media, it had strong female characters WITH strong male characters, it even did what other Nicktoons weren't - it developed the characters. Eliza was incredibly reckless and immature at the start, running off to hunt with lions - then matured to someone who thought to take a static reader on a mountain climb to warn her and her grandfather about approaching lightning. No one was one dimensional (I guess you could argue Donnie, but he's literally 4) and I appreciated that. My apologies for typing this tome - but The Wild Thornberrys has always meant a lot to me and I really feel it deserves more appreciation. I can't see it as Nickelodeon's best cartoon - I'd easily state that's ATLA and LOK, even though The Wild Thornberrys means a lot more to me personally - but it's easily Klasky & Csupo's best and a damn good Nicktoon. Okay, I promise I'll stop typing now. SMASHING. Okay I'll stop typing NOW.
@BlondeCurlsBlueEyes

Omg yes, so much this... always loved this show and I kinda suspected he wouldn't like it. Why don't more people remember this one fondly? It was informative without being a stereotypical "education television" type of thing, and I always loved seeing the people from around the world that the family met. Nigel is amazing, of course, but I liked all the Thornberrys individually (except Eliza at times, she could be a bit of a brat). The art style was quirky but certainly memorable, and it even had a great theatrical film - which was nominated for a freaking Oscar for its music! The Thornberrys need more love for sure.
@SunnysFilms
4 жыл бұрын
@@BlondeCurlsBlueEyes I never really thought of Eliza as being a brat - just a kid maturing in her own time and making mistakes as kids do, but the same could be said of Debbie and, given the stories both parents told, Marianne and Nigel when they were kids. And, as I mentioned, both girls, but especially Eliza, did develop and mature over the series. Eliza in season 3 is WAY different from Eliza in season 1, without losing the cores of her character. And I always appreciated that because other Nicktoons didn't really do that at the time.

This wasn't my favorite show, but the premise, animal factoids, and, of course, Nigel made it memorable. But even back then I was troubled by Donnie's existence. And realized how little he added.

Huh - I didn’t know this show generally wasn’t that well-liked; I loved it as a kid since I was one of those elementary schoolers always bingeing on animal encyclopedias and I guess the whole “was originally going to be an educational show but then was made into a ‘normal’ show” mixing-shenanigans-with-spotlighting-animals-I-might-not-have-heard-of-before-and-facts-about-them thing worked for me. Though at the same time I can’t deny that on the “shenanigans” front, in terms of the main cast, I did always like Nigel being his silly endearing self and Marianne being the straight man to it better than anything Eliza, Darwin, or Debbie did as characters. I also legitimately forgot Donnie existed until I watched this.

The thing I most remember about this show is the movie, and specifically it's soundtrack. When I was in scouts we were interviewed by the local radio station, and afterwards we were allowed to look through the CDs and tapes that they didn't use, and choose 5 each. I saw the one for the movie and grabbed it. That was the night that I learned what a "Single" was.

1:39 I feel the same way about the series Powerless; what it's like to be a civilian in the DC universe. Aside from casual "there are super heroes in our city" statements, there isn't anything that makes it "a super hero sitcom." Like, most episodes I forgot there were super heroes while watching it.

I remember an episode about a legend of some ghost girl haunting a jungle. All through the episode weird stuff keeps happening that might be totally explainable. Then at the end they walk away from in front of this tree, a wind blows through it, and the branches form into her face.

Basically this was the show that made me study biology. Jurassic Park made me study palaeontology. They might be really different, but I'm quite the person I am today thanks to them, and for that, this show takes a really special part in my soul. Yet, they both don't have Master Iroh. But you don't need it all to be memorable in a good way.

Great point about the pitch for "BoJack Horseman". Based only on that pitch, I had no interest in it for a long time. A friend finally convinced me to watch it by showing me your Admirable Animation episode on it, from which I simultaneously learned A) that "BoJack Horseman" was a lot more interesting than I had given it credit for, and B) that your channel exists and is also really interesting. I've been a fan of both ever since.

I really liked Wild Thornberrys but I think it's because my main exposure to it was a few of the episodes I had on VHS, and the movie. And I was very obsessed with shows like Crocodile Hunter and Zoboomafoo so this was extremely up my alley. Though I found myself relating to the older sister a lot more than I thought I would. I vividly remember the dugong and dingo episodes.

The Wild Thornberrys was one of my favorites Nicktoons as a kid growing up due to being really into animals as a kid (and still is) into animals now. While seeing it when younger I didn't think and still don't think the overall series is that awful; true it isn't perfect and also does have its shares of flaws as well as problems to it, but this show still holds a special place within both my memories and heart cause of all the great enjoyable times I've had with it.
