Krewe du Vieux is the most unique and traditional of all the parading krewes in New Orleans. It has no large floats pulled by tractors, relying instead on small floats pulled by people or animals and marchers on foot. Live music is always a must, and the Krewe hires some of the city's best brass bands to join in the procession. The floats are custom-made and decorated by members of the sub-krewes, often with themes that mock local politics and customs, sometimes of an inappropriate nature. This is arguably closer to traditional Carnival celebrations during the 19th century. Krewe du Vieux is the only Krewe still allowed to parade through the French Quarter (other than some small walking Krewes on Mardi Gras Day). The parade is renowned for its sophisticated floats, humorous commentary on current events, and entertaining levels of vulgarity.
