From a Canadian point of view your information is very accurate in presentation in regards to effectiveness and cost. My only other preference is the addition of a hood to protect you from the wind. Turning your back to the wind with the hood up gives your face a chance to warm up when temperatures are extreme. I personally prefer some wool as a comfort factor as well as it’s ability to insulate even when wet. When you have no other options you just adjust layers as required. Bring one extra layer than you think is required because it does you no good hanging in you closet. Before you start your expedition start with a good meal to provide fuel for the stove in your body. Your body cannot burn what it does not have plus it is easier to carry by consuming rather than carry. Then you focus on enjoying the day.

Hi Shamus, another great video of yours. Like you I am a paramo lover and I think it would have been great to include that brand in your layering video. Of course it is not about the brand itself but more about its technology/design which as you for well, reduced the need for layering. I am a pro photographer (and fellow youtuber) based in Scotland and it took me over 10 years to find my perfect system with the Halcon jacket and dbh long sleeve neck zipped 200 merino base layer. The velcro system of the jacket lets me ventilate when in motion and the whole system shelters me from the scottish wind. I do have Rab Alpine light down jacket that I use in combination when in stationary for a while to retain heat. That is my long testimony. Any keep up the good work and if you ever come up to Scotland, I’d love to meet you.

I watched a documentary of why a woman died, ended up frozen to death on a winter snow covered mountain in New Zealand. One of the contributing factors was that she was wearing top and bottom base layers with 100% cotton. The expert findings was that the base layers once wet with moisture, draw away her body heat. Cotton is most def a no no, in such extreme conditions! As for midlayers, a top mountaineer explained that he goes high end with base layers, soft outer shells, and hard shells; other than that he uses cheap insulating mid layers that just do the job of making himself comfortable. The odd time I look on Ebay for those high end products at a 1/2 to 1/3 price from those guys who used it once or twice and gave up! Love a good deal!

Hi Shamus. Another simply explained subject. Well done. I made the mistake you discussed about buying a 'Michelin Man' style garment almost 20 years when I spent a small fortune on a beautiful Gore Dryloft jacket that you can wear down to about -20c. It's beautiful but absolutely useless in the UK as you spend the whole time sweating your pants off! So, as you said better to buy several different layers of even the cheaper brands to wear in changing conditions than go out spend a fortune on one lovely big expensive jacket. Great top tips as always and I'm sure HRH will enjoy the personal mention? Until next time. ATVB Graham

Back in the day when I used to teach paragliding in the Welsh mountains we had a group of students from an outdoor mountain store from London, can't remember the name and whilst up a ridge on day we got hit by a snow storm. We took shelter in a sheep hole and after 10 mins we the instructors made the call to get the students off the ridge, They had all the layors as you'd expect but where still getting cold. My chief instructor and myself had on our OZ flying suits, full length zips, Aquatex outer and synthetic insulation. What we had under where Tshirt and shorts, we where very warm and dry. The suits where designed for hanglider pilots at altitude. On getting down to the carpark and out of the wind the suits where unzipped to the waist. The course of mountain experts could not believe when had next to nothing on under our flying suits. They where expensive but worth it.

She is very special, she’s a home grown dog, not from a recognised kennel. Her ‘line’ is partially Czech. 🐶

2 things I never saw the point of until I tried them was the gilet and the wind shirt. The gilet didn’t have arms on so I just couldn’t see why you wouldn’t just wear a normal jacket with arms it would obviously be warmer and the wind shirt looked so flimsy I couldn’t see the point. Then I tried them and boy was I wrong. The gilet is lighter and more packable and really versatile as it doesn’t add bulk. I have a synthetic one and when I stop for whatever reason I put it over whatever I’m wearing to stop cooling whilst stationary even over a waterproof when it’s raining. It’s saves time and effort, and prevents losing heat by taking off your waterproof and getting wet faffing with taking jackets on and off. When I’m ready to move off again I take it off and shove it in a side pocket, quick and easy. As it’s synthetic it doesn’t collapse like down and retains its insulation properties pretty much when wet. The fibres don’t absorb water and it dries fairly quickly. The wind shirt packs up really small and weighs next to nothing, I put it over a base layer or mid layer and it’s surprisingly warm, it’s shower resistant, dries really quickly and is far more breathable than a rain jacket. On cold, dryish, windy days I find I can regulate my body temp far better and avoid getting sweaty. I’m also with you on the hat and gloves.

Another clear helpful video. I find a merino buff extremely useful in winter. It's cosy around my neck while I warm up but light and easy to stuff in my pocket if I get too warm. I also use it to keep my ears warm in a cold wind (with or without my hat depending on conditions), or over my nose and mouth in very cold conditions. I use buffs in summer to stop sunburn on my neck. Really handy in lots of ways.

Bravo Shamus! I think possibly the best, most enjoyable and comprehensive presentation of this subject that I've seen to date. Wonderful stuff, thank you. One question - the outer vest that you put on over your hardshell at the end, what material is that lofted with? Would it not suffer in very wet conditions?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ian, much appreciated 😊 The gilet is down (700fp) - Yes it would suffer, but this is for when you are stopped and need to keep warm. If it was wet, then my outer layer would stop at the 'shell'. 👍

Good info as always seeing the tower in the background (North Hess' Tor transmitting station) reminded me of the many many times I spent on Dartmoor as a lad with the army cadets at Oakhampton Camp. Anyway I digress I'm sure you are aware of the Buffalo system it defies the layering rule and just goes for the one layer have you ever used it?

Hi Maff, yes I have. I had one for years in Antarctica and used to ski in it in Summer. In fairness I always found it too hot for this country when active. The special 6 is a nice garment too, I have a friend who swears by it 👍

Thank's Steve 😊 The original Buffalo was very thick pile, I used one quite a lot in Antarctica as an under shirt to an expedition down jacket, or on it's own skiing in summer. Alas it was stolen from my car years later. I don't think I could walk in one here though, too hot for me, however, they also made a special 6 shirt which had a lighter pile to it as well - that looks like a lovely smock 👍🐶😊

Me, personally, for where I go and what I do, I may do either. I know that doesn't help, but it would depend on the day and what I was doing to be honest. I've quite often supported thinner trousers with long johns because I find it comfortable and warm - on the other hand if they get wet, you have two wet garments 👍😊🐶

To be honest, the only thing that keeps waterproof trousers in my pack is because I have no sense at all. Barbed wire, poo, a random twig have destroyed many a pair of Craghoppers: so having trousers that are packable and waterproof can be a sensible strategy. Not sure I have ever used them for rain 🤣

Geez Shamus. A lot of expensive hi tech gear for a tramp on Dartmoor. It might be bleak but it is not Antarctica or Siberia. How about winding the clock back say 100 years? Base layer Wool long johns. Next layer Tweed trousers and an An a greasy wool turtle neck sweater from Scotland or Ireland. Outer layer Oil skin jacket and Pants. Hat a greasy wool beanie and a Sou: Wester on top. Foot wear. Greasy natural wool socks . Inside Dubbin treated leather hiking boots. Inside Sea-boots in wet weather. Much cheaper. Easy to source . Or simply buy cheap military surplus gear? Tents and sleeping gear too.Highly researched and dependable.Available everywhere. This hi tech stuff is overkill for strolling about damp and chilly England. It is just a rip off for weekend warriors. lol
