The Wire S4E01 "Boys of Summer" - The teachers of Tilghman and the officers of the Western are educated on their missions. And McNulty scores some free school supplies.
The opening shot...on the left you see the older teachers....they are disillusioned by the system....hence they are disinterested. They can't wait to get out.. checking their watches and passing messages....but on the right are the new fresh teachers who haven't yet learnt the reality of the system. They sit erect facing forward listening in rapt attention. God damn. The details.

Happy and Sober are two different worlds. This is "Sober" McNulty. When McNulty is doing actual detective work, everything that makes him the great detective he is in his mind, makes him a horrible person. He's got tunnel vision. He only cares about the target and the end result with little regard on how its accomplished. He'll stay just on the right side of the law to get it accomplished, but he doesn't care who's toes he has to step on, or who he has to stab in the back to do it. In order to deal with the stress of being a "good police", he allows his vices to take full control of him. Womanizing and drinking. "Sober" McNulty realizes that he's an asshole and that there are people in his life that legitimately care about his well being and like him as a person. So he takes the time to foster those relationships, and does what is necessary to maintain those relationships IE being loyal and faithful, sociable, not drinking in excess, being a good father, etc... Unfortunately for McNulty, he cannot exist in both worlds. There is no "medium" for him. It's all or nothing for him in both regards.

Whenever you hear that a cop received some kind of "training" or that an employee of a business has received some kind of "training" this is basically what they're getting at. I can't even begin to count all the mind numbing bs I've sat through trying to stay awake that the company didn't even make seem all that important til one day it was and nobody could remember the "training" we supposedly received. Half the time ya don't even get that, they just sign off on your "training" rather you were there for it or notkr they'll quickly rattle something off to ya and then consider you "trained". Everything from safety protocol, food contamination, poisons, hazardous chemicals, name it. And I've talked with several former cops and CO's who said the same bs game was played with them. So when shit goes left yet a business or the state wants to say that they already did whatever training but that they'll get right on doing some more to fix some systemic problem that they wanna chalk up to a bum employee or bad apple, remember this clip.

Now here is an idea. Make the teachers and the cops switch jobs for a few weeks. In the schools, my guess is that there would be soon be order in the classrooms. On the streets of Baltimore, there would probably be less patrolling and arrests, but there would be more proficient criminal investigations and high profile arrests as soon as the teachers learn the ropes of that job. Also police brutality would drop like a stone in water.
