This is what I loved about it so much! It was a seriously disturbing horror but also so authentic and a haunting period piece supernatural drama. Most horror movies do not put this much thought into its accuracy and script. The dialogue was so enthralling and I completely forget this is happening now and believe I'm watching puritans go through this.

The Witch is a very unique horror that questions me why the general audience doesn't like it. Would they rather have a cheap found footage movie with clichéd exorcism scenes and jump scares? This movie relied more on mood, atmosphere, imagery, character, drama and tension.

@halloweenfriday

+Stephen Bennett Here's the problem with modern horror films. In this day and age, everyone thinks horror movies are filled with jump scares and gore. And while The Witch did get slow in some scenes, the character drama and moody imagery will keep some people intrigued. The scariest parts of the movie were the family going through turmoil. Each scene with them feels very claustrophobic even though it's set in a wide open space. It reminds me of The Shining. The witch herself was hard to look at too. If you're studying film at college, you'll probably be interested in this movie. But if you're one of the general audience that's looking for a movie with jump scares, then you'll be very disappointed.
@cowboywayne35

Connor Morley 100% agree. I went for some scares so I was disappointed in that aspect. But I respect the movie for what it was and what it was trying to say and do. Film was brilliant. Fucked up beyond all recognition. The witch fucking killing a baby then mashing it up to make a flying ointment was one of the most fucked up things I've ever seen in a movie. The cinematography was the best I've seen this year so far. The candlelight lighting was hard to take my eyes off. The ending is perverse but it's brilliant and daring for a filmmaker to go there. If you don't like psychological, philosophical, and religious subtext this movie isn't for you. There were so many layers. I wish more movies were made with this much substance. Don't take it all at surface level. Think about how the characters are actually being effected. Think about what it was like to live in that time. I'm really surprised by some of the comments on here. This movie will always be a classic to me. I have no complaints about it. What do you guys wish it was like, The Conjuring? I thought that movie was great too. What movies do you hope this one was more like? Oculus I loved. Babadook was pretty damn good because similar to The Witch it was more about real human emotion. All these people calling it boring and not scary piss me off. This is a brilliant film with extremely creepy elements and macabre twisted imagery. Yeah, it isn't full of retarded jump scares, but it's atmosphere is absolutely brilliant. Watch it late at night, all lights off, with surround sound speakers and then you will see that it is an amazing film. Like with the babadook, some people loved the movie and found it horrifying while others found it boring. The people who found it boring should go watch paranormal activity 4 or the freaking nightmare on elm street remake.

More of a creepy psychological drama that gave me the serious heebie jeebies. The experience of going to this movie was a Love-Hate thing for me. Matheus Storpirtis It's depressing how many people fail to recognise an excellent movie when it's right before their eyes. Knowing that some even laughed at certain scenes is almost worse. This was genuine horror and not the stale, repetitive rubbish that dares to call itself 'horror' we get now. Every scene was beautifully shot, it was disturbing and unsettling, it was eerie and of course all the performances were superb! I fortunately waited until this cams out on DVD and watched it with my brother so I didn't experience the audience you got in the cinema. An amazing and chilling experience!

I saw an early release with the director, Robert Eggers. Brilliant use of low-light environments! At times, the scene is lit by a sole candle. He was able to accomplish this because he used RED cameras with older lenses. The camera settings had to be settled and the lighting was adjusted for each scene. Robert was a set dresser for years. Which informs the period-correct hand-made dresses and shirts. Also, the location for the farm. A friend of mine, also a horror film buff, asked Eggers about the excellent score. Robert answered that the original cut had only a minimal score, the score was enhanced and vocals (chorus) were added only during the final edit of the movie. Serendipitous selections, indeed!
@moonlit6311

I think some of the dull lighting choices were built in. Eggers went to great lengths to make everything as authentic as possible. The clothing, language, etc. So- I feel like he was using as much natural light as possible, having the setting/atmosphere play its part too.

The colors help building the depressing/spooky atmosphere. Two details I like about this movie, are that the story is based on acual historical documents so it gives a realistic idea what life that time must have been like. And two the concept of self fulfilling prophecy was very interesting.

I really did like this movie. I loved how it was different and not that crappy stereotypical jump scare movie. However there were some things that had me confused and made me dislike it. The number one thing that made me not like it was the music that was chosen. For how slow the movie was going the music was too loud and hyped up for scenes that didn't really have much going on (like when they first departed from the plantation and when they found the foundation for their settlement). The other one is something everyone could relate to, it was almost impossible to tell what they were saying half of the time XD. The only other thing that had me confused was that some of the stuff was left unexplained. I understand why the witch would take the baby and how she used it, but I didn't understand what she did with Caleb and the twins. The only thing I can think of that she used Caleb for was either to send him to the family to stir up the family and separate them, or just to be amused. Then later in the movie we don't even get to see what she did with the twins. All we saw was her laughing then the next day we just see Thomasin asleep with the goats slaughtered. Were they killed? Did she take them to use them for spells like the baby? We never really knew what she wanted or what she was thinking. I know that that is was what it was that made it scary, not knowing what she wanted from them, but it made things unclear and confusing. It was overall a good movie, it just lacked a bit of suspense and a lack of explanation.

Why would you be expecting anything? I don't undersstand why people go in to see a movie expecting a particualr thing which invariably ruins the entire experience. Just go in and experience it without thinking about anything. It's much better that way. I don't even watch full trailers. If I get the feeling I'm going to like a particular movie in the first few seconds of a trailer - and my decision is made, yes I'm gonna see it - Bam, trailer gets shut down instantly. Why ruin the experience for yourself? They give far too much away in trailers and sometimes even mislead you. Don't watch them.

"Anya taylor joy, I hope I said her name correctly" Dude what is it with youtubers and having no confidence when it comes to names. It's a trope at this point. Yes, it's not really an English name, but it's a very common nickname in Russian. Apologizing about butchering a slightly different name just seems like it'd be a bit alienating.

I really liked this movie too, even as you pointed out it was a little slow at the beginning, but I think it suits this movie because it sets the mood and it shows the struggle of that time period. Personally I didn't find it scary but that'smost likely just me, which matters is that it felt disturbing, creepy, oppressive, bold and interesting. One of my favourite genres is horror I had irresponsible babysitters growing up lol so I have been desensitized to horror movies since I was pretty young. I agree that most of the horror films nowadays are garbage, unremarkable or a one time watch. So it's nice when a quality horror film suddenly shows up, that regardless if it scared you or not, it left a lasting impression on you.

Loved this movie when I went to go see it! Now I can understand why people may not like it because I know some friends who saw it who didn't care much for it; I for one had a hard time sleeping the night that I saw it. For one, themes that involve witchcraft and demons freak me out. Second, the music to this movie and even the imagery and suspenseful moments made me feel so uneasy at times to where I would hide my face in my coat. I also liked that it didn't depend on jumpscares to make it effective; just the tension in a lot of the scenes and the music did it for me. Definitely a movie that stuck in my head the whole drive home that made me question a lot of the ending and some of the elements that happened during the movie. A movie that can do that and freak me out while doing so is also a plus on how effective its scare was; something about having some questions unanswered for a movie can usually make it out to be a very freaky. All the more reason why I left loving the movie and what it was going for...I see a big future for the director, Robert Eggers if he can keep making effective movies such as this one.

Just watched this movie. I respect Chris, but I really feel he got this grade wrong. The movie has an ending that undermines a lot of plot lines. It builds itself up a lot to lead practically to nowhere. If you've seen the movie, I would love to discuss this. I will not spoil it here. But, basically I would give it a C. I didn't mind the perverseness. That was actually a largely positive aspect of the movie. But the motivations of certain characters (particularly the stand out MAIN character at the end) makes little sense. A shift happens out of nowhere, out of place that leads someone to make a decision completely against what they have been the whole time. Wanted to like this movie more. Just can't.
