Welcome back! So glad you're reacting to this. Edit: I liked this episode a lot (I've watched the whole half-season and this is one of my favorites). I thought it did a good job of catching us up with some of the characters (mostly the more interesting/fun ones), and leaving the rest for later (because, as you pointed out, there are a lot of characters and plots going on). One little detail that I liked: When Geralt tells Yennefer that she looks lovely, she's wearing the dress and mask that she wore the night they met (or something very similar).

I did notice that that outfit was very similar. That moment was great!

I'm assuming that first "he's a marshmallow" comment is in response to his "you look lovely?" I'll watch this after the episode's finished... what with spoilers and all...

When did Jaskier start working for Redania? Did I miss something last season?

Because of the horrible adaptation of the books in season 2, the writers in this season (3) were "trying" (to no avail) to walk back some of the mistakes. Unfortunately, they just corrupted the storyline. IMO they paid the writers and show execs too much and couldn't afford more for the CGI and costumes. And you are right, everything in this season is rushed because they only have 5 episodes in part 1, and 3 episodes in part 2. The days of 15 to 18 episodes per season are very long gone. I saw a KZitem video analyzing this season and the problem was with Lauren Hissrich's plan to slowly build the characters up over several seasons. The other problem with the characters (particularly Geralt, Yennifer, and Ciri) is that in the books they were together because they wanted to be, but, in the show they are being "forced" together so they are not the "family unit" they were supposed to be as in the books.

Well, you are not alone. The writers screwed up the story in season 2 and now they've tried to get closer to the books, but it doesn't work because they have to fix their own mistakes. Everything is awkward, fast and stupid

The reason you liked season 1 more (like most people) is because it was ~80% adaptation. Season 2 was like 20% adaptation and people who write for this show are just not good enough to make new content on the level of original writer. Season 3 is more of an adaptation than season 2 but at least to me it's not much of an improvement over season 2. Also, production quality in some aspects is drastically going down since season 1.

Loved season 1, but past ep 1 season 2 was a mess. The writers do not love this franchise and I feel like it is showing as the series goes on.

Its absolutely a story telling problem. The show wants to have its cake and eat it too. The writers desperately want to move away from preexisting material and plots in the franchise but have no real idea of what to replace it with or how. Most of it is because they dont understand why people like the franchise to begin with and they dont really care to understand. They want to write their personal fan fictions and will dress it up as "the witcher" if thats what gets them a contract, but their writing skills just arent that good. So they skip all the world building the other outings do and never really backfill that information for the story they want to tell. Example: The letters. In the books you get those letters earlier. You learn that Geralt and Yen have been separated for several years and their only communications have been those letters every once in a while. The letters go on to explain that they each are keeping distance from one another for their own reasons but still have some feelings... and they have gone on like this until ciri shows up and Geralt asks Yen to help train the girl because he has no idea what to do with a teenage girl much less one with latent magical power. So Yen comes to kher morhen to train ciri and that is where Geralt and Yen rekindle their relationship. The books build the understanding of this estranged relationship that manages to solidify over the care of a child neither thought they could have. The show makes you think the letters are the result of a petty squabble between literal roommates who simply refuse to speak. The problem the show writers have is that they see these cool tropes happening in the books or games and want to use that trope to say "see this is the witcher you know and love" but they have no idea why those things worked to begin with so they feel like tacked on afterthoughts, because thats what they are.

The "dear friend" letters in the show are an annoyance to me too. In the books, it's Yennefer's way of rubbing Geralt's nose in it, after he ghosted her for 3 years, and then reconnects with her with this awkward form of address. When she throws "dear friend" back in his face, what she really says is "you coward". In the show, she grovels, she begs to be his friend. That's not the Yen I know. For better or worse, she never begs, never grovels. Her dignity is her shield and she would not trade it for anything. With two words, she can say "how dare you pretend that we're only friends."

yeah, the style and tone of the show has shifted and is now very different to season 1. Season 1 was a balancing act, it embraced the fairytale/folklore elements and used a lot of contemporary language, but the shots and design were great, and it was tempered with interesting storytelling and an overall adult tone. Now all the colors are bright, the clothes clean, the sets more artificial, all the shots zoomed in 10% too much. In the pilot, the streets of Blaviken felt like a tangible real place and Renfry's story resonated after it ended. Now we have a series of trailer moments, often cool but barely memorable. I'm not someone who gets mad at shows, but the disappointment for me is that Freya Allen finally gets more to do as Ciri, but the show around the cast is lighter.

So true for me too about S1 being so rewatchable! I never heard of anything Witcher but I really loved S1 - especially after rewatching and picking up all the clues to the timeline that I completely missed the first time. But something fell off for me in S2 and it continues here. I can't quite put my finger on it - but I find myself not caring about anybody not named Geralt, Yen or Ciri and sometimes even finding their interactions...different. And not in a good way. I can only assume it's the writing.

YES. I totally agree. I came in with no previous which of knowledge as well and absolutely adore season one. I think the chemistry between the characters is a little lacking, and I just don't know enough about acting or what happens to make chemistry work and when chemistry doesn't work how much that has to do with the writing. But also the writing is not great

And for all mankind, criminally underrated series.

Season 2 was mostly filler and original content that's not consistent with the books or even the characters as they were presented in season 1. Now we're into season 3 where they're trying to catch up with book events that should have occurred last season, while still injecting original but inferior story. They're fast forwarding through relationships, excluding logic from court intrigue, inventing senseless supporting character arcs, dumping exposition, injecting conflict for the sake of conflict, defining 'intelligent' characters with petty and foolish personality flaws to drive the plot, and so forth. It's a travesty of terrible screenwriting that has deviated enough from the source material to poison the essence of the story. At least we get a break in the middle of season 3 to contemplate why we're still watching at all...

Something is cheesy in the state of Witcher. But yeah, I get you completely. The show just isn't good. They changed the story too much in season 2 and now they need to change it back to get on track, but it's impossible. The changes they made in season 2 literally didn't matter in the end because they're changing them again, but now need to waste time on that. The relationships between the main characters just feel so empty, and I really don't think it's the actors' fault. Anyway, I'm so happy to see you post again! I hope you'll at least enjoy this season a bit, and I honestly hope you'll give the game a try too eventually.

Thank you so much for watching! I have watched all five episodes now and I'm working on editing them and getting them up. I do like some of the things that have happened, but as a whole it does feel like there's a lot of course correcting that could have been avoided if season 2 is better.
