lol, I remember that MadTV sketch. It's hilarious. One of my favourite "Wizard of Oz" parodies is the one with the Oreos in "Wreck-It Ralph", when they do the guards' chant. And I remember whenever the movie aired on tv, they always put an ad break after the Lion jumps out of the window. Great review! "The Wizard of Oz" definitely deserves its classic status. I've actually wanted to see someone attempt a more faithful film adaptation of Baum's book, as the book is actually rather different in tone and much darker than the movie. "Return to Oz" is probably the closest I've seen an adaptation capture the feel of the books. But the 1939 film would likely cast such a huge shadow over it and I guess that's why it hasn't happened yet, even though there is so much franchise potential to adapting the Oz books. Even "Oz: The Great and Powerful" borrowed a lot of visual ideas from this movie, depending on what the WB lawyers allowed (they were actually forbidden to give the Wicked Witch a mole and the makeup had to be a different shade of green).

Well-done review, Justin! This is my favorite movie of all time, I've loved it since I was a kid and I think it's wonderful that your first date with your fiancé was this movie. Your background with it is interesting because yeah, that is something that many cynical people go through. Even I don't mind making pot shots at the film at times because like they say, you can't love something unless you're willing to make fun of it. Like you said though, despite its morals being simplistic, they are still ones that good and needed especially in this day and age. There's one last thing about this film that solidified why I love it. When I saw it last year for its 80th anniversary, there was applause at the end from a packed house with kids, parents and grandparents. It was so so beautiful to behold. That really captured why I love going to the theater: It's a shared experience with so many people and that can't be replicated at home. After how sucky 2018 was for me personally, that was just the thing I needed to cheer myself up. Hope you liked what I had to say.

Nobody sees any of the other big 30s movies anymore, like dracula or king king. But this is one of the most timeless films. It's a fairytale that will probably go down in history more than the source material.

There was actually a Wizard of Oz reference in a little obscure comedic Snow White video. Snow White notices she's walking on an "odd path" (Yellow Brick Road). The next moment, the house comes down and when Snow White comes onto the porch, Dorothy comes out and makes a variation on her famous line about not being in Kansas any more. Just before that scene, there's even a Psycho reference when Snow White considers a room at the Bates Motel, but soon realizes there's something wrong about Norman and decides to go somewhere else.

I have both the DVD and Blu-ray for this movie. The audio quality is very good for being recorded in 1939. How?
@CinephileStudios

MGM probably took really good cares of the original sound recordings, given that the movie was important even in 1939. Lots of old movies had their original negatives and recordings badly deteriorate because the studios didn’t care about most of their stock. I’m sure Wizard of Oz was kept in a golden, well-regulated vault

The movie is a wonderful experience for the audience but because of this movie the main actress Judy garland lost her life and had suffered so much during the shooting of this movie
Fun Fact: It was released in 1939, The same year where World War II started.

Curious. A review of Wizard of Oz is like reviewing the Beatles. What’s the point? Any interesting subtext to their career is no longer subtext since it has already been covered a billion times. Any positive analysis is redundant and reinforces nothing while anything negative is met with a shrug. Other than to appease your fiancé, why did you even bother?
