This must be one of the most detailed and sophisticated stage productions of the classic Wizard of Oz I've ever seen! Everyone here must've worked really hard. And yeah, this is also has the best Tin Man I've ever seen; he's a great singer and dancer. Makes me wonder how this Scarecrow's sequence went, but I'm especially curious to have seen this production's Cowardly Lion.

Have you noticed something strange? Despite all the videos here on KZitem involving any kind of stage play, including The Wizard of Oz, they're always only small segments usually pertaining to the musical numbers. Noone has ever posted a whole series of videos that all together encompass the entire production.

The sets and costumes were rented from the MSG production and the direction and choreography were recreated by a cast member from the tour, I assume with permission, so I don't think it was illegal.

@sosdead well if you think about it, that's how the scarecrow is in the movie, very excentric and falling all over himself. I think he may be a little bit too much but it's hard on stage to get that lvl just right

@angelnprogress The stage version based on the movie script expanded on some parts for more comedy. Seeing this is a theater, it works. The trouble with following such an icon as the classic film is, one needs to find ways of making an original performance. This is not the movie, and doing the movie literally on stage is pointless.
@RayPointerChannel

@MrStevenRichter There are many ways of portraying these characters. The challenge is in making an original performance that does not look to be an imitation or influence of Ray Bolger, whose portrayal is such an icon and a hard act to follow. But for my taste, I'd agree that this portrayal of The Scarcrow is too over-the-top and clownish. While The Scarecrow is litterally a "dummy," he actually is intelligent, which is the irony of his situation.

Thank you ryguy212. I am in a production of the wizard of oz at the moment and this is the broadway script. The one bffn321 the script that schools use are really crappy and there are like so many different versions. So you wanna go tell L Frank Baum the original writer of THIS script back in 1939 that his script is wrong? hannahdonal09 just shut up these guys are awesome and you'd have to be pretty amazing to beat that. They are not being overdramatic. They're acting you should try it.

Actually, the characterizations are rather good here in spite of a few things that may seem a bit jarring for video. I do feel that Ryan Ruge as the Tin Man is over articulating the song, but is an accomplished dancer, which is obvious. It should be kept in mind that the movie is such an icon that anyone doing these roles has the challenge of creating an original performance. That's the point in doing this. If you want the performance of the movie, you can watch the movie.

What production is this? I'm certain it has some relation to the 1998 Madison Square Garden production? And the tour that followed? It's not the cast that was originally in it and it's not quite like it which makes me question.

@angelnprogress Its not overly dramatic. Its just the way it should be. If it wasn't, it wouldve been like a boring high school production put on by nervous un-talented kids like u. You're always supposed to over dramatize things in Theater.

Wow, awkward blocking... i.e. banging on the chest. as my director always says "Careful, DON'T ACT" and "You looked like you did it because your director told you to and will throw something at you if you do it wrong." Always have a reason and make it look realistic, not a quaint play that grandma will enjoy because you have a part and solely for that reason
