If you read about the war between the Dahomey & the French, It’s interesting to learn that the French were actually defending their African slave partners from the Dahomey who trying to enslave them. Also, the French won the battle in a couple hours.

Yes. I keep seeing comments under other videos that said that the Dahomey fought to continue their slave trading. I've been reading up on the Dahomey. They weren't the only ones. The Dahomey and the Oyo as well as other African people in that area constantly fought and enslaved each other as well as trading with Europeans. As in Black Panther a council of various clans within the Dahomey would come together and talk policy with the king. Some of them actually did want to get out of the slave trade. They started to transition to palm oil. But under King Behanzin the slave raids continued. By the way, even though they were practically slaughtered, the French felt that the Dahomey Mino were courageous and fierce fighters, and excelled at hand to hand combat. The French credit their use of bayonets for winning battles against the Dahomey

@@chbry1050 what's ironic is that some of the Mino were captured from other tribes and some were Dahomey women or girls who didn't "act right" at home. I guess this was supposed to be their punishment.

Why was there Colonialism, after the transatlantic slave trade. The Romans had slaves. Yes African had slavery amongst themselves, but did they ensue mass genocide when they sold their people to Caucasians?

I have seen this movie twice so far, and it's magnificent from start to finish. I have no idea what the fuss is all about it was just a well made movie. not one scene that gave me the understanding that it was a documentary. If there was no democracy how could the women choose their battle, no they had a King and did what was necessary to save their people. I think it is truly sad when we display a strong black female, something just has to be wrong with it. We say that there is not true representation for black Americans on the big screen, but it's the blacks that are torching this movie because, what? The same warriors image that is in Black Panther, without the harsh negative comments. Ms. Davis put her heart and soul in this movie and it is one to enjoy. Both times that I have seen it, each time the audience arose clapping all the way out the movie theatre. Don't miss this, you will love it.

The trailer's glorifying a group of people who raided their neighbours, enslaved them, got rich off selling them, put them to work in plantations, ritualistically murdered 500 slaves annually and fought back against the English and French, who went to war with Dahomey because said group refused to do away with slavery like the Europeans had and kept raiding those under French protection. Not to mention that in the actual battle, the Amazons were completely wiped out in melee combat while only six French soldiers died. It's not amazing in any capacity other than 'amazingly disgusting for trying to paint an absolutely _wretched_ group of people as the heroes.'

Dahomey’s fearless female warriors were called, the Mino. They had their own flag, insignia and marching band. When they seized an enemy, they decapitated him and hastened to brandish these severed heads as trophies and to scare the enemy away. “Win or die” was their adage. These terrible female fighters considered themselves braver and stronger than their male counterparts. As they passed, the population knelt down in recognition, gratitude and respect. The Mino were considered demi-goddesses. Nawi, the last amazon died in 1979 at the age of 100 after fighting French troops at the end of the 19th century

The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves.[2] As a highly militaristic kingdom constantly organised for warfare, it captured children, women, and men during wars and raids against neighboring societies, and sold them into the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for European goods such as rifles, gunpowder, fabrics, cowrie shells, tobacco, pipes, and alcohol.[5][6] Other remaining captives became slaves in Dahomey, where they worked on royal plantations and were routinely mass executed in large-scale human sacrifices during the festival celebrations known as the Annual Customs of Dahomey.[2][6] The Annual Customs of Dahomey involved significant collection and distribution of gifts and tribute, religious Vodun ceremonies, military parades, and discussions by dignitaries about the future for the kingdom. In the 1840s, Dahomey began to face decline with British pressure to abolish the slave trade, which included the British Royal Navy imposing a naval blockade against the kingdom and enforcing anti-slavery patrols near its coast.[7] During this time period, Dahomey was also weakened by military defeat from Abeokuta, a Yoruba city-state which was founded as a safe haven for refugees escaping slave raids from Dahomey.[8] Dahomey later began experiencing territorial tensions with France which led to the First Franco-Dahomean War in 1890, resulting in French victory. The kingdom finally fell in 1894 when the last king, Béhanzin, was defeated by France in the Second Franco-Dahomean War, leading to the country being annexed into French West Africa as the colony of French Dahomey..... FACTS!!!

Wait - Hollywood is making HEROES out of enslavers!? But I guess it's ok because these particular slave-owners are from a certain Identity Group. They were slave owners. But like we should NOT cancel George Washington and T. Jefferson, we should NOT cancel this movie, either. I'm sure that great stories, and great acts of heroism, can come from any culture, and this culture is no exception. Also, Ms. Davis is also a god-send as an actress (Oscar winner, etc.) - one of the best actors in the world today. And girl - did she WORK OUT for this role, wow!

Thats the issue, women don't understand their place in society... Stay INA uno lane... The name might sound innocent, but its not... The King is the most powerful on the board no matter how many directions or options the Queen has to move... Imagine a man saying he is the man queen, yes, that's how crazy it sounds....

I wrote an essay on this in school over 20 years ago, because I was very interested in naval history. Slavery is a massive stain on multiple countries and white people like myself had a lot to answer for for their part. What annoys is that Hollywood and certainly the left wing media crew love to do is point the finger only at then colonial powers; even thou this kingdom and others but mostly this kingdom were likely the biggest slavers in the Atlantic slave trade. They never stopped anything or even attempted to stop, they were stopped and the African coalition of nations along with the French absolutely obliterated them because they wouldn’t stop invading other countries to round up, butcher, rape and enslave thousands of African people. The women made up about half of the kingdom army, but along with the men they got massively destroyed by ACN and the French. The narrative that this kingdom stood up to slavers is bloody ridiculous and insulting to ACN and French who ended their evil reign! Slavery from Africa was eradicated because the British and French policing the seas off Africa following huge sanctions imposed in 1896, however it really ended because the ACN and the French stopped them by force!!

I really wish more "white people" (infact any person making comments)had your knowledge of the slave trade before commenting . The reality is that slavery happened.. it wasn't pretty but slavery in Africa and the united state were different. American didn't see the enslaved African as human. Sexual abuse became common and brutal after enslaving for a moral religious effort. All for a life sentence to include your children and their life sentence. No money . Smh.
@rtygfdfg

I choose to believe if the knowledge of the abuse that happened to the African sold to a cruel American was made evident to those African nations they themselves would have stopped the slave trade. They were lied to. Manipulated, and plotted against one another for the gain of this human cargo. Smh
