Quick correction: A colleague of mine explained to me that the "metallic tide" is more likely referring to spitting than to vomiting. Keep this in mind. Lit teachers, click here for cool stuff. 👇👇👇 www.csecenglish.com/

Once again sir extremely well done analysis of this poem. With regards to the Absalom reference as I remember Absalom was also the most favorite son of David and he was probably the first born as well so he was primed to take over the kingdom. However, Absalom could not wait to ascend the throne so he waged war against his father, slept with his concubines and harassed David. Therefore, the reference could mirror David's heartbreak at his son's actions because David really loved Absalom.

Thanks for deepening the insight into that allusion. Just as Absalom was too eager to ascend, this young man, in his eagerness to make money, might have taken up a life of crime. Just like Absalom, the woman's son has an early death marked out for him due to poor decision-making, and just like David (as you mentioned), the woman will grieve the lost son when he dies.

I have my csec engish exam in a week, so I'm just rewatching these videos to refresh my memory. I've been watching your analysis videos since I was in 3rd form, and now I'm in 5th form. Thank you for helping me through those years, sir! I'll definitely recommend your channel to the younger students who have started the csec syllabus 😊

Great analysis as usual. I reflected on the form of the poem and realized that there are 6 stanzas which can be linked to the expression "six feet under" which alludes the traditional depth of a grave ( relates to the central idea of the poem).

Hey Adam! Lots of love from Jamaica!! I was wondering if the Biblical Allusion in lines 13-15 could also be Luke 11 vs 11 "If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?"
@AdamWebbCSEC

Hi, thanks for watching! Are you referring to these lines? "He says you are like a father to him she is wondering what kind of father would give a son hot and exploding death, when he asks him for bread." If so then yes, this certainly alludes to Luke 11:11.

Amazing analysis but i have a question, in stanza 3 where it says "set no ceiling on what he could be doctor, earth healer..." could you say irony was used there, as both seem to be jobs which would help the world get to a better place but he instead chose to be a criminal

@@AdamWebbCSECi have an english b question i would like to use this poem for. What i mean is she sacrificed herself when she spent years raising him as a single mother living in poverty and then she had to sacrifice her hopes and dreams for her son because she knew that he was unwavered in his decision to live a life of crime/or as a soldier (i really never thought about that)) this vid helped me alot.
