Joan Crawford had to fight for the role of Chrystal, Louie B Mayer didn’t think the role was big enough for her but Joan was no fool and she knew this character was the showiest role and had some great lines. This film easily outclasses the two insipid remakes and its great fun

Wow Rosemary, you know a lot about this movie! Norma Shearer saw the play on Broadway, and pitched it MGM as a vehicle for herself as Mary. She and Joan Crawford were rivals, and didn't like each other. Despite this, Shearer lobbied for Crawford to be cast as Crystal because she knew she was good casting for that role.

What's noticeable - and interesting - is that trailers like this one used alternate takes or outtakes instead of duplicates of the footage that ended up in the final film. So even if the dialogue is exactly the same, how the performers are delivering it is different. You can compare some of these scenes because some of the final ones can also be found on KZitem.
@jasonhurd4379
3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad someone besides me noticed this. It's interesting to hear these alternate takes, but in each case the one that wound up in the film is superior. I can just imagine Cukor painstakingly polishing each actress' reading until it was perfect, the way he did with Lady Rothschild in the embassy ball scene of My Fair Lady.

stateofdreams1 I agree 100%. Why are contemporary movies so bad?
@brian7164
7 жыл бұрын
Payhole Everdouche, that's because contemporary films rely so much on modern technology and action sequences that they miss the bullseye with the characters, the acting and the story itself. When a film relies so much on CGI and all the special effects, it lacks the most important things about a story: the plot and the characters. Back then they had to work with what they had for special effects but the acting had to be first-rate. Now I'm not saying that all older films were good but you sure got to say the acting was a lot better than what you see today.
