After 50 years of carving, sanding, and finishing, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that wood might have lost its luster for Chris Compton. But it’s far from the truth. Compton is the owner of The Wood Whittlers,
home of handcrafted wooden masterpieces and holder of Gatlinburg’s oldest business license. The shop was founded by Compton’s father in 1944 and opened in its current location in 1968. And despite all that history, Compton continues to be fascinated by his primary material.
