This is what I like to see at this point in Gameboy retro modding. We have advanced so much these past 20 years in components that we are returning to aesthetics. Nice build easily worth $200-300 for just the shell based on wood type. (Math: good resin shells with designs start at $60, lumber isn't cheap, designing the cut paths and labor, trial/error). It's the type of DMG I'd put in a glass case under lights.

I think it would be fascinating to see how far you could "organify" the gameboy further- you could make the buttons of wood, the membranes out of leather maybe, the screen bezel out of birch bark and capiz shell, etc

@ThereOughtaBe
3 ай бұрын
Sorry, I don't have numbers, but the doors make a difference. When they are closed, the shop vacuum is definitely the loudest part of the setup. If I open the doors, it depends on the current job.

@ThereOughtaBe

Thanks! And that's a collage of the bits I used. You are probably wondering why they turn before I actually turn on the spindle? Well, I could not make the spindle turn slowly enough to see the rotation, so I turned them by hand in order to make the cutting direction (upwards or downwards) visible. The spindle has a knob at the top to rotate it manually and hence they are rotating unevenly in steps because it is just my hand...

What is that epic tetris remix during the cnc montage?
@ThereOughtaBe
10 ай бұрын
Well, that just happened to come together nicely... I had that drum pattern in mind early and edited the video to a matching 120 bpm in blocks of eight bars to match the music later. Then I played the drum part and edited the typical chord progression from my outros and the signature sound from my titles into the mix. And when I ran out of ideas, the Tetris theme saved the day :D

What song is the tetris remix? it sounds really cool
@ThereOughtaBe
10 ай бұрын
I made it for the video. Originally, I planned to just use my "signature sound" (the three notes when the title is shown) and the chord progression I use for the outros, but when I ran out of ideas for the long CNC timelapse, I threw Tetris into the mix...
@lordmemester8798

@@ThereOughtaBe that's awesome. are you releasing it anywhere?
@ThereOughtaBe
10 ай бұрын
Sure. It is not really mixed to be listened to as a standalone song, but if people like it I can place an mp3 somewhere. However, I think I would like to wait a few weeks before doing that. This may sound a bit silly, but I hope that people might rewatch parts of the video for the music, which would be registered by the KZitem algorithm. Not sure if it really works that way, but I would like to get that additional view time for a week or two while there still is a chance for the algorithm to promote the video :)

Where did you find that gameboy, I have never heard of a white gameboy with blue text, or a grey gameboy with black buttons, let alone one with black A and B buttons, but grey Start and Select, with blue text on the shell.
@ThereOughtaBe

I am quite sure that the previous owner replaced the buttons after a mishap with a drink or something. The buttons looked rather ok compared to the terrible state of the rest of that Game Boy. There actually was a mold on the silicone pads. I pretty much bought the cheapest Game Boy on ebay in which I was still confident to find a working mainboard. (The seller reported the game to start and play sound despite a broken screen.)

Oh, now I see. Play it loud had black font and a darker start select pad... nevermind! 👍
@ThereOughtaBe

Yeah, that's why I thought that the buttons were changed (along with the desolate state of the silicone below them). Although, I really did not get the impression that the seller would have even thought of doing any repairs. But then again, that could already have been a second hand shop combining two broken Game Boys long before my seller even got it, who knows...
