Could Glenn Close be any more awesome?! I seriously doubt it- she ROCKS! and how much I would love to play the part of Jenny Fields; but nobody else should or could.... no one would do it justice! Glenn, you are truly an inspiration!

Her film debut was a voice dub over of Andie McDowells voice in Greystoke, the Legend of Tarzan.

@@melteague117 that was released in 1984; this is 1982. This was definitely her debut.

She is exactly Jenny Fields. Her mannerisms are exactly as written in the novel.

One of my favorite movies, several scenes come back to me, I think of great lines of dialogue all the time. Glenn Close and John Lithgow were just brilliant. Comedy and tragedy at its finest.

Glenn Close is amazing, and so "in" it here. Robin Williams is great in a subdued role, and reminds me of my High School crush! Swoosie Kurtz is unrecognizable, until someone pointed it out it's her.

Glenn Close is four years older than Robin Williams and she's playing his mother lol. Still great performances from the two of them.

I was going to say .. Did they age her for the role? She was only 34 in 1981 when they filmed this. Then again I know people looked older in the 80s.

@I_Said_ OU812 Today. You'd never seen someone like Selena Gomez in the 80s. She's 27 and still looks 15 to me. Did you see Carrie Fisher in the original Star Wars? She was 19 years old. Could have passed for 27 or older today.

Didn't attract a large audience.....I guess this movie was too "hi-brow" for the average movie-goer. The theater was about full when I saw it in 1982 in NY. It wasn't a smash hit like "Good Morning Vietnam" because Robin was more subdued in this, but his performance was good in this movie. I liked the adaptation from the John Irving novel. Also, Peter Weir liked RW in this movie and wanted him for "Dead Poet's Society".....

Someone please tell me why she didn't win an Oscar for this role!!! Excuse me, but this is much better work than Jessica Lange in Tootsie! Glenn deserved it!

It's so weird in hindsight that Glenn Close and Robin Williams were about 3 years apart in age. Yet, it was perfectly casted.

It's basically because Garp's mom is nuts and that's why he is the way he is... fairly normal, considering.

It's so wild that at this time everyone thought Robin Williams was this insane comic when at the same time he was doing these kinds of movies and proving to us he was already a brilliant actor. It's almost like they were two different people. The comic and the serious actor. Because when I see him in this movie and Moscow and the Hudson I don't think of that comic at all.
