I flew El Al about 10 years ago from Newark. The security was unbelievable. After regular screening they have their own much tougher screening where they ask all kinds of questions. My friend was pulled for additional screening because a box of dominoes in her luggage looked suspicious. They made her go through her luggage. They wouldn't touch it. On the way back to the US I was pulled because of some books I had packed in a stack. They told me I should have spread them around. They were polite but very serious.

My friend flew with this carrier. A very orthodox man was seated next to her and had a fit, saying she was unclean (her period) even though she went through the menopause years before. He would not sit next to any woman and insisted he was upgraded to first. The cabin crew were having none of it. They absolutely would not upgrade him no matter how loud he got. Eventually a fellow passenger offered to swap seats so he was sitting with two men.

This was so funny to see, because I always avoid flying El Al (in economy): their prices are never competitive, and their service generally sucks- if I’m going to be cramped in a plane for a bunch of hours the least the cabin crew can do is be friendly. 🙃
@sydyidanton5873

It is a shame you have had that experience. I’ve flown LY several times both short haul and long haul. I’ve always found them very friendly but not over the top. It is authentically Israeli, casual but caring and anything you need they are more than happy to accommodate. I like that they are different though, I also Ike that they are true to their 'Sabra' nature, Kosher and the only Jewish airline (full service). I also feel remarkably safe travelling with them. As a Jew flying into and out of Israel, they are the only airline I’ll ever fly with. I have not flown Israir as I don’t like LCCs at all, nor do I like flying on Airbus rubbish. I have flown Arkia a number of times domestically on their Dash-7s, ATR-72s and E190s when Sde Dov/Dov Hoz airport in northern Tel Aviv was operational. They are unremarkable and quite forgettable but a great way to see Israel from the air, especially from Haifa to Eilat. Ultimately though what can you expect on such short flights? Wishing you safe and enjoyable flying whomever you chose to travel with.

I have taken both El Al and Arkia, israeli airlines. I supose the security service is necessary, but it's crazy. There are some personal and familiar questions that nobody should make.
@sydyidanton5873
Жыл бұрын
That is a common misconception for first time experiences with Israeli security procedures, when it comes to those ‘extreme' questions they are not interested in your answer so much as they are checking a number of involuntary physical responses to how you behave defensively. It is a baseline to determine deceit in other more important questions. There are a number of methods such as they’ll often ask you the same question three or four different ways, and in quick succession so you don’t have time to think just answer spontaneously. Some of the deliberately 'provocative' questions might include how much do you earn, what type of car do you drive, how long have you had it, how much did you pay for it etc. I promise you they are not that interested in your private life, invasive though it may seem. It’s all about reading micro expressions and other behavioural cues, to find an individual's baseline they need to make you uncomfortable and on edge first. The technique works exceptionally well and ensures your journey with an Israeli airline is that much more safer. I hope that explains why and what you encountered and now know that those security officers who interviewed you are seriously not that nosy, inquisitive or interested in your private life :)

El Al is superior to its other competitors for serval reasons. As you mentioned the extra security and antimissile systems onboard makes passengers feel more safe and comfortable flying. Also they are the only airline that is certified kosher (yes other airlines offer kosher food but don't follow all rules such as not flying on the Sabbath and jewish holidays). Also they offer lots of nonstop flights from the USA that other airlines don't(Boston, Miami, Las Vegas, LAX).These are just some reasons.

I don't consider myself to be a "snooty flyer" but I definitely don't approve of traveling in shorts. Here's why. In an emergency evacuation, you want to be in long pants. And you want closed shoes, not flip flops or sandals. Dressing for an emergency is always smart. No "snooty" to it at all. I've only flown on El Al once, from Munich to Tel Aviv a long time ago. We were intensively grilled before check-in by the security guy and the aircraft was escorted to the runway by a battle-ready armored personnel carrier! I felt SAFE.

As I grew older I started to see a change about flying, I started to see a class difference I started to see division of people with wealth vs those who flew to travel or to discover there loved ones. Near my 20s I realized the greed taking over airlines and the joy of flying was simply to get from point a to b. I have flown all my life and the idea of classes sickens me. When I last flew with them it was London to Ben Gurion and back on a 747.They had a special security check at Heathrow.Tel Aviv actually has 2 airports, Ben Gurion and another smaller one,Sde Don, that,I believe, just handles internal flights to Eliat.

There is also Haifa Airport, that until Corona hit, had flights to Greece Cyprus and Eilat. There are some grand plans to make it a large international airport but I imagine it will be a good 5-10 years until then

I loved flying from Sde Dov/Dov Hoz, the IDF had some aircraft stationed there along with a few private Exec Jets. I have flown in and out of it many times to Haifa and Eilat. The old airport in Eilat was brilliant also, both so unbelievably convenient and sad that it has gone. I don’t know why why they built another airport for heavier traffic. There was nothing that a few little upgrades couldn’t have fixed at Ovda which was used for anything larger than a B757 during European charter season. Sde Dov has been slated for housing development for years, now they’ve finally got their way and shut it down.

@@markcohen7317 I not certain who uses Haifa now? Arkham used to operate flights to Haifa from Sde Dov and Eilat (ETH) when they still operated ATR-72s, but they’re long gone now. I have flown from London to Tel Aviv and back many times over the years, but have never used El Al. I used to fly British Airways from LHR, but latterly took to easyJet from LTN (which is much more convenient to my home). My first flight to Israel (in 1970) predated Ben Gurion; we flew to and from Lod. I have used Ben Gurion before Terminal 3 existed and we were in what is now Terminal 1, which is where one has to check in for easyJet. Anyway, I quite like T3, so interesting to see it from your perspective, Dan!

I had no trouble entering Israel but leaving was so difficult. I heard security can cause people to miss flights so I went to the airport 4 hours before my flight. Well, I got flagged! I'm a special education teacher usually kindergarten but sometimes up to 6th grade. I had injured my knee and could hardly stand but they gave me a seat. They interrogated me, searched all my stuff twice, made me remove my clothing and checked under.every.roll.of.fat! Asked me endless questions. It was a very long 3 hours! I had to pee but was afraid to ask because maybe it would heighten their suspicions? I began to get scared even though Israel and the USA are "friends". Plus I had to get back to my teaching job in Iraq. I was flying Turkish Airlines. Strangely they never asked me questions about that. I did enjoy Israel and the amazing warm, hospitable Israelis but will never go back because their airport security people scared me to death. I'm just a quiet sort of person. Heck they didn't even believe I was a teacher until I answered questions about how to run a classroom, plan a lesson, etc. It was the WORST airport experience I have had anywhere and I love to travel so have been to a lot of airports in different countries. Forgot to say I had some yarmulkes and other Jewish stuff I bought at Yad LaKashish. They train elderly to be artists and give them a warm meal, medical care, salary, and transportation. Such a great organization and beautiful things you can even buy online. They are in Jerusalem. Well security asked me why I had Jewish stuff if I'm not Jewish. My reply, "I bought Chinese stuff as souvenirs and I'm not Chinese, Mexican stuff and I'm not Mexican." Seriously, you would have thought my cheap, recently made stuff were ancient artifacts or maybe it's offensive for non-Jewish to buy that stuff? Anyhow, the regular people are lovely but airport security was very unpleasant.

I have also been interrogated and asked the same questions several times over, never strip searched but had my luggage thoroughly searched. It's best to just answer calmly and without aggression or sarcasm. I don't mind since I know why they are doing it. It is nothing personal and it keeps you safe. It is easier these days to pass through security than what it was some years ago, they also have better techniques. But it will also depend on the risk level. And yes I agree, Iraq was probably the key word. Regarding the "Jewish stuff" maybe not offensive exactly, but possibly a little sensitive if these were religious objects. But I'm pretty sure they asked mainly to observe your reactions.

@@dorinbentley ?? What did you nearly fall for? Am I missing something? As a Jewish Australian, I also love flying El Al and will gladly do at any opportunity. I have always found them friendly and typical Sabras which I like. The food is fantastic that’s for certain especially breakfast. I can’t comment on their economy class service as I’ve always flown business. Their business class service is undeniably not nearly as good or as polished as many other airlines I’ve flown with, but I would fly with them in preference to any other airline. After all where else do you get to enjoy hearing Hebrew, or not worry about any antisemitic nonsense and the entire cabin service is Kosher.
