Wong Kei restaurant changed owners a few years back and they hired all new staff. I've been going there since I was 16 years old,(I'm 57 now) the food is just ok but it used to be much better and much more social because a lot of Local Chinese people used to go there.

I lived in China for three depressing years. Believe me that was not rude service, I have had far, far worse, not only in restaurants but shops, markets, hotel receptions, bars, ferries - any contact with westerners. The worse thing I found was if I went into a shop to buy, say some drinking glasses, they would disappear into the back of the shop and return with a beautifully wrapped parcel. On opening at home it was inevitable that they had substituted some broken glasses, I quickly got wise to this as you can imagine. However, to be fair, I also met some really pleasant people so although it doesn’t even itself out I can confirm there are some very friendly and polite Chinese people out there.

When I lived in London in the 1980's I loved Wong Kei's. I was shown by a friend from Hong Kong how to get the best from the restaurant and once you understand you get a great meal at a great price, served efficiently. This restaurant is set-up to serve food quickly. Know what you want before you enter the restaurant. There is a menu in the window. Choose just one or two dishes. Expect to have your meal with jasmine tea. Go in, ignoring any queue at the door, find a seat and sit down. You will immediately be attended to. Don't ask for the menu or the wine list. Don't ask any questions about the food, just order. It will come with a large covered bowl of plain boiled rice, a teapot of jasmine tea and a cup. There will be chop sticks and a spoon on the table. Avoid asking for a knife and fork. When you are finished take the bill (the check) to the till and pay with cash. You don't need to leave a tip. Follow these guidelines and you will have very efficient service and a lovely meal. If you want to be pampered and if you want spend time luxuriating over your meal, and have it with wine, or stuff on the side then you should choose another restaurant. When you get your head around the fact that the staff are not your servants, they are your equals and they are they are their to provide you with good quality, authentic Chinese food at a great price. It is expected that once you have finished eating you should pay and leave so that that place can accommodate another hungry soul.

So you haven’t experienced the waiter started clearing up the table and mopping the floor before you finish your food. Once the waiter even told us off for talking and said we should finish our food instead of talking. That happened years ago when I was a young girl. It happened not just once but a few times. We were once being told off for speaking English instead of Chinese Cantonese but unfortunately English was our common language. I never return since then.

I visited Wong Kei in the early Nineties. In those days the restaurant was spread over three floors - not sure if it was in the same building as now. The waiting style was astonishingly rude, but highly amusing. I asked the waiter for a barbecue chicken dish, to be told in a cross voice: (please excuse the apparent stereotyping, but this is word for word) "No. You not like that. It cold and it got blood in it." Glad I didn't have the bird's nest soup..

Let me take you back several decades. I lived in London in the 80s and this was the "go-to" Chinese restaurant. I don't remember downstairs being like that at all. Back then it was the usual traditional Chinese decor...but I'm sure we always ate upstairs. On the menu board outside (in same place) there were set meals....but the set meal for two wasn't much compared to set meal for four. So, couples would hang about outside by the menu board (us included) to team up with a random couple to enjoy the experience. It was well known practice amongst those who weren't just popping in the once. I remember there was a couple of big round tables upstairs as well 2 or 4 person tables. If it was really busy (it always was) chances are we'd (+ random couple) would sit on the big table (probably sit 10). It was fun to meet new people and share a huge fabulous meal. All the food was placed in the middle and it was a free for all more or less. Sometimes diners would just stick with their own food but just occasionally once everyone had got chatting it got to be shared from the serving plates between all so there was very little wastage. Couldn't imagine anything like that today. Yes, back then the staff were "rude" (alikened to Fawlty Towers) and the service incredibly quick - they wanted you to eat and go...not a place for a romantic date night. But....the food was amazing and knowing they're still in business 35 years on is testimony to that.

We went regularly to this place 30+ years ago, always fantastic food. If you want 5 star dining experience, this isn’t the place to go but you couldn’t fault the food at all. When we were going there, they had large tables which seated 8 and if there were 2 or more people, they’d tell you to sit on the table that had a space. As we sat there one day, we saw a young lad and his girlfriend come in, must have been 18/19 years old, they were asked how many people, they said two and were directed to the table we were sitting in, the boy looked at the waiter and said “it’s my girlfriend and my first year anniversary together, can we have just a table for two”? The waiter didn’t even pause with his reply “you want good food, you sit there, you want kissy kissy, you go somewhere else”… the boy looked at him, stunned and they slowly sat down at the table and saw everyone grinning at the comment :)

Do they still remain rude, as it was a quarter century ago? Waiters there would react when called by a customer, like "Why on earth you called me of all the waiters working here, eh? I am busy." Nonetheless, it was the least pricey (Chinese or otherwise) eating establishment in the whole of London, and the taste was not bad. Anyway, the MacMaster really pinpoints the most interesting or controversial "Must Visit" spots at all times.

Cash only is commonplace in Chinese and Pakistani businesses because they don't declare it to the taxman, that's why they drive fancy cars and live in big houses. It's also why they change management so often. Ask any accountant and they will tell you they won't take them on as clients because they are too dodgy.

The food looked really good! As for the service, you should visit the restaurants in NYC Chinatown, very typical of Wong Kei. As you say, because they are busy and want a quick turnaround may explain it. As for going cash only, here in the US credit card companies can have high fees, so I don't blame them but contactless is much better during the pandemic.

Twenty minutes later my friend asked about the “Chicken skin” item on the menu because it seemed unusual and a waiter hilariously replied “It’s a chickens skin”.
