Fun fact: In 2009 Xavier Henry was actually committed to the University of Memphis along with Demarcus Cousins. John Wall was waiting on Tyreke Evans to leave and he was committing. Calipari left for Kentucky and took Walls and Cousins with him. Instead of following Cal to Kentucky, the school allowed Henry to de-commit and he chose to joined the University of Kansas.

Leaving after his freshman year was a bad idea. Had he stayed one more season, he would've gotten considerably more minutes on a team that was just as good -- if not better , than the previous year (the 2010-11 team had the Morris twins and Thomas Robinson, and made it to the Elite Eight in 2011). Looking at the 2011 draft, it's not that to see Henry going in the Top 10, and possibly to a team that would've been willing to give him more time to heal and develop. He got drafted by the Grizzlies who, at that point, were a perennial playoff contender, and didn't really have a role for him, or the patience to develop him either.

so let's look at it from his perspective. lets say he stayed in college. his injuries started his rookie year which mean it would have been his sophomore year. The injuries continued well into his final year. So if he stayed in college when the injuries started there's a good to great chance he doesn't make it to the nba bc of this. So yes, he was stunted but he was allowed to achieve his dream.

I’m extremely familiar with this story. When you look back at most of his highlights, you’ll discover that his skills werent polished enough for the next level. You made good points about his mother and father (Carl and Barbara) both being great athletes, but you left out the part about his brother Carl Jr., who was arguably a better athlete than Xavier. Xavier was bigger and so much better than everyone else he competed against ih high school, that there was no barometer to measure against therefore he was not pushed to work harder and polish his skills in order to excel at the next levels. He ended up being just a slightly above average shooting guard with the injuries too much to overcome. He had all kinds of basketball people and spirits around him, but he did not possess the “dog mentality” to go along with it to excel at the NBA level.

He is a classic case of being too good too early which made him not work as hard because it came easy. What the top high school kids don’t realize is from high school to the NBA for some of those kids is 2 years and their mentality stays on the high school level therefore lacking the preparation it takes to be successful in the league.
