That’s not quite the story I have read. The artist originally produced the album cover with Eddie as Death, alone, beckoning toward the viewer on the cover. The band looked at it and thought it looked too empty. You can find this alternative cover online if you look for it. So someone else got hold of the artwork with Photoshop and added all those other stupid things on the cover, the dog and the baby etc. Then the band said ‘that’ll do’ The original artist asked for his name to be taken off when he saw what they had done. Just a little more important detail/correction to your story. But you can look up what the original album cover for Dance of Death was. I know I have seen it online, it might even be on the album wiki page.

@@gsdfan8455 - Oh of course! Yes! Go checkout Wrathchild America's version on their album "3D", its how they end the record. It's a bit ahead of its time too with an odd mix to their brand of Thrash, and can be a bit technical too. Its one of my all time fave Thrash albums. Their version of that song is quite funny too but still retains that "Playin' in a Juke Joint" vibe :).

I actually like a couple of these album covers. Take Voivod's Angel Rat artwork for instance - Whilst not exactly something that I would hang on my wall, it still conveys (at least in my opinion) some kind of old school metal/rock mystique. Metal / Prog album artwork in general seemed to take a dive in the late 90's / early 00's - Perhaps because in this era a lot of art being used involved either photography that was poorly inspired & photoshopped, or computer-drawn art that was sterile and lacking nuance compared to anything painted / drawn by hand. Artwork has somewhat improved again over the last two decades, but overall the mystique is gone.

The Helloween cover is a funny one. Storm Thorgerson is a legend in artworks, with the famous Pink Floyd covers from Animals to Divison Bell, some AMAZING arts and ideas in the 90's (Phish - Slip Stictch & Pass, Anthrax - Stomp 442, Dream Theater - Falling into Infinity, Bruce Dickinson - Skunkworks, the Muse, Alan Parsons, The Cranberries and Audioslave covers). He is a lot into turning visual realism upside down, I love his work, and that Helloween cover, well, by far not of his best ones but still cool!

what always trips me out is i was in junior high and highschool in the 80s graduating as 89 turned into 90. like every one i knew that was into metal drew pictures like these back then, and half the friends i had could have drawn better album covers than most of these. back in the 90s i use to make fun of those alt rock bands for having lame names and lame album covers, i just do not understand the whole thing. most bands are lucky if they ever in their lives get to actually record and release a single god damn album. when you get that opportunity you want to go all out, why the hell are you going to choose some lame band name or some lame albumt title and why are you going to just take some really boring generic weird picture and slap it on there. i just will never get it.

I remember first seeing that Metal Church album in my dad's CD collection. I'm thought it was definitely the most hideous cover art I had ever seen to this day as well. It definitely discouraged me from wanting to listen to the CD, as well as even the band. I thought, "This could only be terrible and disappointing". Very well made video! Definitely some obscure acknowledgements that I am glad to have seen be mentioned, as well as new ones I've never seen before.
