I usually fry new potatoes in a cast iron skillet. I cut them in smallish pieces (1/2" cubes or so) and fry at hot first and then season and cover and turn down the heat. New potatoes tend cook within 10 minutes. And, no skinning them as the skins are so thin. There is a fair amount of nutrition in the humble potato :)

Congrats on your spuds, Aisling! Well done! That'll be you hooked on growing your own lol Any that have green bits, just cut that bit off, it's grand. Big dollop of butter & a sprinkle of salt on that baked spud, yum! Cant't beat it :) oh and pepper plants are actual perrenial (in the right climate) so you can pot them up into bigger pot of fresh compost and overwinter them. That way you'll have a head start with them for next season. They may drop their leaves but will reshoot once light levels and temps start to increase in the spring next year. Just keep them on a windowsill, very lightly watered, no feed, as they go dormant. All the stress with the cottage will be so worth it as the work progresses with the builders etc. You've got yourself onto the housing ladder, that's a big deal for young ppl these days, so don't disregard your achievement, you're doing great! The rest of the overgrown fields will be starting to die back soon, now the weather's on the turn so you might save a few € by holding off till spring. It should be easier to check the ground for big stones/ rocks & boggy areas too, incase you do then get someone in to give it a good going over. Best of luck with it all :)

Exciting harvest of taties ❤ No you can't eat green ones. If others have had a nibble you can cut that bit off. I've been impatient and my leaves are still on them but i've been digging around for what i need and then steaming the baby potatoes and rolling them in butter and garlic. Yum, yum, yum. Yes, when the leaves begin to die you can harvest, and you can just take the baby potatoes, little by little, when you need them while they are still growing. Home grown is always the best. I dont know if you follow gardening channels, but i can recommend Welsh Huw Richards and English Charles Dowding. Irish Bealtaine Cottage you may like too.

Too funny. You were so excited about the potato I thought you were building up to tell us the grant was approved. 😂 Potatoes are the best way to cook potatoes. So versatile. I Chop mine up, coat them in olive oil, salt & loads of garlic powder and roast them. You just have to toss them around a couple times. They come out crispy on the outside & fluffy on the inside. 😋 Yours looks absolutely yummy🥔🥔🥔 This was 3 weeks ago so I hope you have better news. Hang in there Aisling. You can do this. You are not alone & I think you know that already. You always say “we” are doing this & that. 😊 I have a head cold so I hope I’m making sense. It’s all a bit foggy. Take care of yourself & lean on others when you need help. I’m having knee reconstructive surgery in 2 weeks. Growing potato’s is so rewarding. Great crop there. Any that have been nibbled in don’t throw away! They can be your ‘seed’ potato’s to plant for your next crop. Hopefully you’ve had word on your grant and shore up those walls very soon 🏡💚
@brendamontanye9877
18 күн бұрын
or just cut off the nibbled part and eat the rest :) Same with the green part. I've heard some interesting info about planting small potatoes (whole) in the fall. Even though I live where it gets cold in the winter (US garden zone 5) I'm going to give it a try. You cover them with a thick layer of compost and then straw/hay/chopped leaves or whatever. You don't want them to come up in the fall, just have a cozy place to wait. You'll note that next year wherever you grew potatoes the previous year the ones you missed will grow so it might as well be intentional. At least I'll give it a try this fall as I have a good supply of potatoes for next year's seed potatoes already. I am a garden experimenter for sure.
@morrigans_cottage

Oh that’s such a good tip I will give that a try! I left some potatoes in the plot as I was too lazy to go back and get them all out 😂 I’ll cover with some clippings and see what happens! @@morrigans_cottage you're 9???? oh, yes, totally jealous. My husband and I built a greenhouse over a couple of years (it took So Long but worth it in the end) and that gives me a zone or two in that space. The first year when I didn't have any infrastructure or plants in there I kept my roosters in there to eat weeds and fertilize. No snow for them was a win. Come spring, I eat meat so you can guess the rest of that story. (but they had a good life and a couple had the opportunity to be friendly with the hens so the cycle continues.) I am even trying to grow sweet potatoes in that warmer environment though I don't have a lot of faith. Experiments!
