Bad Bat is my absolute favorite AT thru-hiker this year - she is a hoot and a ray of sunshine. I never ended any of her videos without a smile on my face. Nothing like saving the best for last! 😊😊 Guess you could be glad (in retrospect) that it didn’t happen towards the beginning - that coulda been enough to end it.

So earlier this evening I was watching one of this year's AT candidates, Maddie (aka Ranger aka Beer In Beautiful Places), and she's been struggling with mozzies. They've been really getting her down. You may like to proffer her some wise words of encouragement, too. Incidentally, Badbat rocks too. Like you all do.

Every time you have a bad day in the "real world" you can reflect on that day and realize you're made of steel. Hiking gives you a perspective most people don't have. 💜

I always admire your inner strength Juliane. Younger hikers ( mid 20’s) when the hike starts getting tough, can be heard saying “ If it’s not fun anymore why do it”. That’s the point, it teaches you to persevere, to dig deep. Fun doesn’t make you a stronger person.

Yeah, sounded pretty horrible to me for a hiking day. Love all the toddler tantrums bits. That's exactly how I feel when my body won't do what I want it to do sometimes. 🤣

If if you go back and look under the shelter you may find the remnants of your favorite hat and a few very fat mice. Thanks for sharing your story.

Sounds like a pretty bad day to me! Starting the day out with unbearable pain in the foot is bad enough, but add rain, cold and shark week too? Yep, I think every female on the planet can relate, and would have brought you a tub of ice cream if it were possible! You lived to tell the tale. Thanks for sharing. 😊

Wow, thanks for sharing! Bad (and good) days are relative and it's never a competition about misery. It was clearly an awful day for you and your will & tenacity compelled you to survive. Now, you're even stronger than ever before! Kudos! The insult to injury was losing your hat. Argh, what a bummer! 😢 Agree, Bad Bat is fun to watch. Very real and I appreciate that so much. ☮️❤️🤝

I remember that well! I guess my worst to date is when I was hiking solo in a pretty remote area and it was fall--towards the end of the day on day one, going over a boulder field with leaves in between the boulders, I put my foot down and it sank and twisted--and I came down on a rock on the side of my head. Now, had I not had my wonderful trekking poles, I might not even be here now, but my pole broke my fall (and BENT as it tried to save me), so I didn't hit the rock as hard as I otherwise might. I felt dazed and lay there for about 10 min before I got myself up and managed to get to the campsite and set up my tent. I considered trying to get help but decided to risk it. I know. Maybe not too smart LOL. But I woke up the next AM so the gamble paid off LOL. But I did feel pretty worried falling asleep that night.

I have wanted to do the AT since I was 10 years old and my grandmother shared the story of her grandfather traveling the Oregon trail as a boy with his family. It was quite an adventure but along the way his father got sick forcing his mother to drive the wagon, his 4 year sister died ( she was buried along the trail) and other travelers in their party lost their lives trying to get their wagon across raging rivers. The AT seemed like a real way of honoring my ancestors effort to give us a better life. I will think of them on my bad days on the AT in 2024. I’m glad you were still able to finish despite being tested so badly on the last day!

I was one time backpacking a few days with my two adult sons. Fell, brushed it off, but it HURT. At camp they kept asking me if I was ok, oh yes fine, but there was NO WAY I could set my tent up so I told them I’d rather cowboy camp and look at the stars. Excruciating pain in my ribs, but I masked it and finished the trip. Went to the DR and I had broken 4 RIBS! To this day I don’t know how I managed that, but there was also a lesson for me. What if I was masking the pain from others and it was much more serious? Prob wasn’t the best way to handle on my part.

Wow! And groceries had two painful/numb feet, right? Good thing she's not the type to film everything. Think we can all imagine the adult tantrum/fit because we've all done it. Definitely did sound like the worst day.
