Yeah I agree with all of this. Especially your point on Aegon's characterisation. They should've had Dyana the maid get pregnant from consensual sex with Aegon, and have Alicent chastise Aegon for his sleaziness and infidelity when he should be acting kingly. Aegon should be a pervert not an out and out rapist. The audience is probably going to have a hard time sympathising with him now but then again Jaime did try to kill a child and he became a beloved character so who knows.
@fantasyhaven1
Жыл бұрын
Honestly for a modern audience, rape crosses a moral event horizon because it hits close. The audience were open to Jaime's redemption despite pushing Bran out the window, but after the awkward "accidental rape" of Cersei, the fans were furious with him. People love Daemon despite him being villainous because ultimately, men killing their wives with a rock isn't exactly common. Sexual assault is. The very first scene of adult Aegon is him being confronted over raping someone - any potential sympathy from the audience was lost from the get go. No idea why the writers went that route

@@kostadim7892 Honestly I think the difference is that Rhaenyra is presented as "enjoying it" and therefore consenting in some capacity (as if a teenager being preyed upon by a manipulative uncle is capable of absolute consent) while Dyana is shown as terrified and upset. @Davide-kd2cm

it feels like they, from their clear totally pro-black pov (which to be fair GRRM holds as well, and most of the audience would naturally even without making things more black and white), wanted Rhaenyra to be the hero the audience attaches to, which makes it even more baffling that Aegon offers nothing that could shake that first sentiment and create some conflict about whom to root for, I guess it's just to drive it home that the greens are bad (except for Alicent, but she's not good) and the blacks are good (except for Daemon, but he's bad/grey in a sexy way so it's fine), I just wonder whether they'll keep on removing certain sins and flaws of Rhaenyra, if people will see her as another Daenerys that randomly did vicious stuff, or if having lost her child will get people to justify everything upcoming

Something that always bothered me was the show’s portrayal of Criston Cole. I never cared much for book Cole but I always thought he had such potential as a character in a hypothetical Dance series, instead though we just got this bitter pathetic brute who feels more like a lapdog than the Kingmaker who should have a intimidating presence in every scene he’s in. It's why in the show as compared to the book, Alicent's character _is_ more sympathetic, but the plot suffers, because it unnecessarily drags, A LOT. Her not already being on side with rest of the conspirators to put her son on the throne, even though she should already be by this point (episode 9), makes the interceding scenes where she has to move towards that point a complete slog. With the time skips, when cast was replaced with their older counterparts, you could have easily just assumed she moved in that direction since the wedding episode, since that is not only set up in that episode, but it's been done with a bunch of other plot points prior to episode 9.

"They only have 10 Episodes" I would agree with this regarding episodes before 9 and 10. However, Episode 9's entire purpose was centered on the entire Green coup itself. It could have and should have been a slow burn that culminates in the beautiful coronation of Aegon the 2nd while giving us some nice insight into the Greens. Instead, they gave us an unnecessary chase, the foot fetish (I don't hate it, but seeing what they cut out...), and the Rhaenys girl boss scene. The Chase scene takes up 20 minutes alone. Think about that. Cutting that out and replacing it with the Green council, the silent coup, and the Kingmaker plot would have been much more fitting. Overall though, I loved this piece. It was great, charming, and unique. :)

personally as someone who leans team black. I find myself sympathizing with Aegon, im disgusted with his actions, and him as a person. However i can’t help to feel bad, his dad ignores him and is decaying most of his life, only paying attention to his older sister, his mom treats him more of a weapon against rhaenyra or a way to get him on the throne rather than his own son, both otto and Alicent treat him as their puppets rather than him as a person. Alicent loves him, but we see that she uses him mostly for his claim, rather than him as a person, the fact that he asks “do you love me” a man of 20 something years old, says a lot about what he felt growing up. knowing how the story is gonna go, and his grandpa and mom dragging him to a civil war, then later all the shit happening. Alicent’s character for me is terrible, don’t get me wrong i love that she isn’t an evil step mom. But her character in the show’s whole purpose is being a victim to the men around her, and knowing how the story goes, she will probably remain that way. having a character suffer throughout the entire serie is not interesting, yes give them complexity make them sympathetic, however make them a complete victim??? the writers were so afraid to show her flaws and actually wanna portray her as a major player, it pisses me off so much. Yes you could say it’s the time period, however give her that ambition?? desire?? instead now she is doing it because she believes Viserys words. I also would’ve preferred not to have Rhaenyra and Alicent be friends, because the writing of the friendship was terrible. i find myself very bored with Alicent as a character, wouldve loved to see that fire inside of her. The writers did a better job portraying “good and bad” traits on characters like Aemond, rhaenyra, viserys, characters who do questionable things but can also appear sympathetic to the audience. Alicent’s character feels like a contradiction to me. Aemond is the best written green so far.

Something that was a recurring trait of this season was taking purposeful and intentional decisions from the books and creating an almost blameless situation out of them. Making Aemond’s ill fated chase of Luke above Storm’s End has grown on me for the most part, especially considering how they can use it to build on Aemond’s character in the future seasons. But making Lyman Beesbury’s death a violent accident frustrates me to no end. There are three possibilities laid out in the books. What’s critical however, is that all three of them are intentional choices on the part of the Greens which binds them together in their goal. Once Lyman is dead, it’s in for a penny in for a pound. In the show, it comes across more so as: “Oops…Well, I guess we have to support Aegon now”. I really hope season 2 drops the whole accident/misunderstanding thing which colored many of the character choices this season. Especially considering the event that historically comes next in the Dance of the Dragons. Because that is not a blameless event in the slightest.

You cover pretty much all the flaws that I'd expect professional writers/producers to point out before filming starts. In my mind the council had a darker, orange candlelit glow of the early morning. Looks like they waited for midday given how bright it was. The first scene in ep.1 with Rhaenyra was a great example of "show, don't tell", they forgot that in ep.9. The clumsy exposition had me cringing. Interesting characters make hard choices. In an effort to reduce their villainy, Alicent and Criston lost agency. Viewers can respect "evil" choices made for good reasons. Also, isn't there a giant back entrance that Rhaenys could have left through? It seems to be well below the main hall.

On a serious note, though, thank you for doing this video. I have been waiting for a detailed video dedicated to critiquing this episode since it aired, and you've summarised most of the major issues with it, so well done. It really grinds my gears how inconsistent Alicent's characterisation was this episode, especially when you compare it with her character for the previous 8 eps. She vacillates between this shrewd political schemer one second, and sympathetic victim of the patriarchy with no agency the next. It's jarring. Didn't she spend over a decade painting Rhaenyra in the worst light possible to her kids and instilling that fear and hatred into them - feelings that would eventually precipitate the Dance - since they were young? And now she wants to be best buddies again and spare her life after one (mostly) good dinner? It's also ridiculous how Mushroom's testimony is suitable for people like Criston and Aegon, making them rapists and brutes. So the least charitable interpretation is suitable for them, but not for the female characters who have to look like saints in comparison, because God forbid we have one of the main female characters be evil, or power hungry, or anything negative? Just look at the writer/director combo for this episode complaining in interviews that they didn't want Rhaenyra to end up slightly chubbier after several pregnancies because ''history books are written by men who portray women in the worst light possible''. That tells you everything you need to know. Ludicrous. This was a bad episode (with a handful of good moments) in an otherwise great show. The music was fire, as well.

i feel like all of season 1 was rushed. even if that wasnt the show writers' intention, theres only so much from f&b you can squeeze into 10 episodes. like they only wanted to target things that contributed to the storyline rather than give you the full dramatization if that makes sense. it really is a shame but it doesnt mean its a bad show. its only the first season and maybe they have more to show in s2 in terms of showcasing the actors skills and emotional build up. but it could also just be a limited, rushed style of directing as well. like in GOT they made a few changes to characters and a lot of the dialogue. although they are both different shows, book to show/movie adaptations tend to do that. but i totally agree. i feel like to be fully emerged into a show these little things matter, s1 felt almost underwhelming but not because i still love the book and show haha

A famous actress said if you're a female character you can only be a victim or a villain. And you're a victim only because you're not trying too hard to be a villain. That sums up every vulgar critique of Alicent that comes from one group of Targ Stans who deliberately misinterpret every subtext out of spite cause they didn't get their 65 year old evil stepmom disney villain caricature; and another group of fans who are allergic to any emotional complexity, getting frustrated cause every woman isn't portrayed as Maergery girlbossing her way into Tommen's bed and working her Slay Kween magic on a child. If Alicent was really portrayed as the Mushroom version of the 1930s Vamp Seductress stereotype, unscrupulously jumping on 70 year old Jaehaerys' bed, it would've been more digestable for their emotional intelligence. Things like her repressed sexuality being manifested in her son is way too much for an audience who's media literacy can't go further than "lol nyra good mom. teach son valyrian!! alicent bad mom. hit son!!" All this for a godawful cash grab history book a rogue's gallery of corny monocle wearing cartoon villains with no character growth whatsoever.

This goes for the season as a whole but they're trying to make alicent and rhaenyra way too likeable when they are meant to be really bad people as adults, they need to go more down the route of what they did with tywin his likeability comes from his coldness and his ruthlessness and his demeanor, it seems like with alicent and rhaenyra the writers wanted to make them likeable by trying to make them good people instead of the extremely manipulative abusive murderous people they are, we saw small glimpses of it in rhaenyra but they still times those moments got toned down too like the faking of laenors death seems too toned now that he got away with his lover it could've been a really good way to set up rhaenyras willingness to kill and manipulate but they toned it down because they didn't want her to seem like a bad person, and there's so many other points like that in the season

(Potential Spoilers) I imagine they'll probably use the dragon thing at the end as motivation for the..... (Making sure it's not visible without clicking on the comment) storming of the dragon pit. Like you said. Since i always had trouble imagining one guy managed to convince a bunch of peasants to storm a massive fortress full of flying death machines. This at least gives people a reason to be enraged by the very existence of dragons.

If they had made the crowed split between support for Aegon and support for Rhaenyra I'd agree with people complaining about Rhaenys bursting through the floor oj Maelys, but the fact that they are all cheering Aegon makes them the first casualties of the war that has not begun. True, Rhaenys coukd have ended the war right here, but it was still a awesome entrance and a statment that says, you cant control a true dragon. Everyone forgets before criticising this sceene. House Targaryans words are Fire and Blood. I say its a awesome sceene that have basically started the war with Rhaenys tellingvthe greens I'm with Rhaenyra. All the while showing them and everyone else, just how destructive and devastating its going to be for everyone.

Imo HotD is somewhere on the level with GoT s5: very good and, whilst miles better than the later seasons of GoT, nowhere near the depths of the first 4 seasons and definitely inferior to the book(s) . The characters are much less complexed and more black/ white (the blacks are white😜), many of their actions don't feel realistic, some things are downright illogical. One of my fave things about F&B (and GRRM in general) is the ambiguity surrounding most events. Often none of the 3+ accounts sound likely. i know that's easier in a history book then in a TV show, but I wish they kept some of the mystery instead of showing us what happened right away! The plot, as well as most characters, somehow feel more generic and less developed than their F&B counterparts! 😳 ppl tend to slightly overestimate this season, because, after S8, they expected it to be as bad or worse, and it was a pleasant surprise🙂 great video. Cheers ❤️

I agree it was the worst episode. The ''thriller' thing they were going for was very weird. The logic of the plot was off. And they did miss a great opportunity with the green council. I'm however down for them playing up the nobles' disregard for smallfolk though. I think they are laying out some excellent groundwork for payoffs later. AMAZING VIDEO THOUGH! I hate how they white washed Rhaenyra, like how she let Laenor escaped to go lolly gag somewhere. They have Aegon rape a child but they won't even let Rhaenyra kill someone for power, yet people still act like the show is neutral 😤 and also the coronation scene is so stupid. Why would they have Rhaenys explode through the floor. So dumb.

I loved when the queen that never was came from the floor, it was her breaking out to find out what was happening, the greens had locked her in her room. And she didn’t fire the greens because it wasn’t her war to start or finish. Plus it’s honorable to take the news to her niece.

Incorrect. She did not “break out”. She was snuck out safely and chose to do that bs with her dragon instead of simply flying off. She didn’t kill them because as the showrunners exposit, she related to aliscent as a mother 🙄. It is certainly her war. Making a power move such as murdering innocent civilians and a flagrant threat in the monarchy’s life makes it her war. Even more so after running to rhanaerya and warning her of the nonsense. She has. One sided herself with rhanaerya. It also wasn’t honorable at all. She rather flippantly informs rhanaerya and immediately says she is leaving and attempts to do so. She only stays because she goes into labor. She also pointedly does it want to lend her niece any assistance and shows her no fealty at all

I read the Rhaenys situation differently but agree with you on most other points… I can’t go past ep 6 as my least favourite, needed at least one ep in between 5/6… I’m not a book reader btw. I agree the small council could have been thrashed out more, sacrifice the cat and mouse chase… I’m hoping there’s some payoff in future seasons to justify decisions made in the latter part of this season… Regarding Rhaenys tho, I can see why she busted thru the floor, but understand it could’ve been better executed. I don’t think you can compare who she was earlier to where she was at here after enduring so much loss, and then top it off being imprisoned… the scene between her and Alicent was probably top 3 interactions of the season, as this is the shows main plot point… the servitude of women to men who rule over them. So with that in mind, Rhaenys showing some controlled force is the exclamation point for Alicent… Rhaenys was able to ring more than just a bell with her answer. About the civilians wiped… Alicent apparently counts the true cost to her people, but knows by what she’s done (usurpation) is ensuring that war will befall her people, killing many more… this is where it could have been executed better… who knows, maybe down in the pit there wasn’t choice without alerting other dragons and keepers but to only go up instead… 🤷♂️ The people slapped her down at the great council, just returning the favour perhaps… as we know she won’t be the last Targaryen to take down innocents

Not sure about being upset with the choices they made ragrding aegon? He is a known abuser in the books, unfortunately that includes grape. Above that, his promiscuous and aggressive activity towards women was shown through his younger counterpart on multiple occasions. Not every character needs to have sympathy/nuances. Some are just shitty people and I believe aegon is one of them... We dont miss much from them not whitewashing him.

We might not miss much, but we also don't gain anything from it. I never got the impression that he was that bad in the books, at least not to the extent he is in the show. "I don't understand the reason why they made Aegon so evil"- simply because they want the fans to cheer for the blacks. Almost every character from team green was portrayed worse than in the book, except Alicent and Aemond. They even wanted to completely cut off the most sympathetic green character Daeron( even though he is important). But the thing is, no matter how interesting Alicent and Aemond ( and maybe Daeron in next season) are, they are trying to put a rapist/sadist on the throne, which automatically makes the green team less attractive to the audience in general

Targ Cult's opinions about Helaena's dreams, Jace, Laena, etc. shows that 99% of their criticism of HOTD is pure bad-faith spite of not getting their preferred version of the Silver Kween vs Evil Stepmom disney movie. Their third grader emotional intelligence is best shown by the childish petulance towards Helaena. "What is the point of her dreaming if she can't predict!!"....No, it’s true! the only reason why prophetic visions should ever be included in fiction is so that the a Silver Kween Girlboss Warlord can interpret it with 100% accuracy & clarity, allowing steps to be taken to successfully prevent it & saving the world! This is 10/10 MCU storytelling btw! Surely there is no reason why the character who meets a tragic, unjustifiable fate might be given the power of prophecy with no way to communicate it?! *Like show a single ASOIAF character who is a prophet or dreamer who accurately interpreted their prophecies. The prophecies are exercise in human folly & futility. The beauty IS in Helaena knowing everything but not being able to prevent.* If one can't understand this simple thematic choice they should go watch Beauty & the Beast or something. Targ fandom embarassing themselves every day trying to wrap their heads around thematic choices that don’t directly propel the plot forward in a linear line to the next event, screaming & howling about fictional characters’ “agency”. Then you have their straight up fanfic about Jace. You know this show is doomed when Targ Cultists, who've hijacked the ASOIAF fandom, can say that F&B Jace is a brilliant military commander & his traits were stolen by THE Aemond Targaryen & get hundreds of likes. Traits that F&B explicitly assigns to Aemond & Daeron : good fighter, clever, military asset, bravery. Meanwhile Jace, who's F&B characterization begins and ends with "umm he was a good kid". Almost a deranged level of detachment from reality. Lastly, Targ Cult invented an entire Laena-Rhaenyra headcanon ship from 3 literal lines in F&B (where nothing romantic is explicitly stated & Laena is Rhaenyra & Daemon's passive doormat as Targoids would want every non-Targ woman to be). That's all their criticisms come down to. Jealously that the Hightowers are given the importance they deserve and the general public isn't infatuated with the Lizard cousins the way they were with Dany. All you have to do is see the deranged amount of hate they showed to the 3 year old actress playing Jaehaera for being called "The Little Queen", accusing it of being stolen from Daenera...when Jaehaera in F&B is called, ding ding ding, the little queen! Canon to Targ Stans is whatever fits their fake outrage. Team Black delusionally convincing themselves that Baela Rhaena & Laena are more important than Alicent, Helaena & the Greens shows that they don't actually care about canon, they're sabotaging the show out of spite for not getting Girlboss Silver Kween Warlord vs 65 yr Old Evil Stepmom Disney Villain Caricature.

@@Al-ji4gd For me episode 9 is interesting at times, especially all scenes with Aemond. As for Aegon, the show already destroyed his character in episode 8. But ok, I have to admit that episode 9 is barely watchable. Can't get that cringeworthy foot scene and terrible ending out of my mind. Every time I rewach the episode, I always stop watching before that over-the-top Rhaenys crashing Aegon's coronation scene. Just awful!😡The book version was perfect and they shouldn't have changed it. It would have made more sense if Sunfyre turned up and defended his rider. This connection between Aegon and Sunfyre is highlighed by GRRM in the book. Sadly they had to stick to their budget and therefore no Sunfyre or another dragon fight with Maelys. Well, hopefully the show runners will do the Greens and their dragons justice in season 2. 🤔
