00:00 History's Fashion Fails Introduction
Fashions evolve, going through innovation after innovation. While we're sure we can all agree that taking the combination of frock coats and pantaloons and developing them into the modern-day suit is no mistake, history has undoubtedly given us reason to look back and think.
01:20 1. Coifs
Sometimes spelled ‘coiffe’. A fabric head covering that covers the top and back of the head as well as the ears tied under the chin with two strings on either side.
03:08 2. Chaperon
A type of hat that became popular in the late 15th Century and was primarily used to denote wealth.
04:41 3. Super-Tight Breeches
Also called, ‘britches’, are the forebears of the modern-day trouser. The main difference is their length, as breeches are essentially leg coverings that stopped around the knee, and are designed to be fastened tight with buttons, drawstrings, or buckles.
06:42 4. Stockings/Hose
Historically, hoses were tight-fitting trouser-like garments that covered the lower half of the body from the waist to the feet. Eventually, the hose would be split in two, for a short period becoming the “Upper hose” which covered the waist to the thigh, and the “Nether hose” (or stockings) which covered the thigh to the feet.
08:17 5. Codpieces
Popular in the 15th and 16th centuries and was an exaggerated form that sat in a particular place below the belt and between the knees.
09:34 6. Ruff Collars
These were stiff linen collars made from fluted frills that surrounded the neck and were often trimmed with lace.
10:40 7. Powdered Wigs
Wigs certainly aren’t new, as the Ancient Egyptians closely shaved their heads and wore wigs to protect them from the sun. To get rid of the odor the wigs produced and to stop parasites and lice from infesting them, lavender-scented starch was used to powder the wigs.
12:22 8. Tie-on Glasses
In the 1720s, spectacles didn’t have arms with ergonomically bent ends to sit on the ears. Instead, a ribbon was tied through loops at the ends of the arms that would flex around the wearer’s head.
13:15 9. Crakows/Poulaines
The pointed toes of these otherwise soft shoes could reach impressive lengths being around 50% of the length of the foot and the tips were often stuffed to ensure you could walk in them.
14:47 10. Shirts as Underwear
Before the age of boxer shorts and briefs, men would wrap these long shirt tails around their legs and nether regions as a way of doing an all-in-one shirt undergarment.
15:57 Conclusion
Ultimately, we live in the 21st Century, and our technology, clothing, and sensibilities are very different from how they have been in the past. The key thing to take away from today’s video is that while fashions change, style is eternal!
