Nice work on a notoriously hard brand to neck set.

Always interesting seeing a Guild neck reset. They have a reputation of being difficult to remove. You took your time and did a great job of getting the neck off. Love old Guild guitars. Good to see one more back in action.

It’s awesome that you work on Guilds. My bridge has been shaved down too far, so when I do my neck re set I will need another one. Any suggestions on where someone could find a replacement for a 1970 D50? Thanks keep these cool videos coming.

An excellent job, Caleb! Ignore the comments below. For those wondering why he didn't put a wedge under the fingerboard extension, it is not "unprofessional" in the slightest. A slight fallaway is totally OK, and in some cases, intentional (e.g., on a fretless bass or on necks with short truss rods). It is hard to overstate how hard a neck reset is on a Guild. Over the years, I have seen many with twice -- even thrice -- shaved bridges because some luthiers won't even try to remove the neck. Caleb has done as professional a job as the absolute best of them.

Thanks for posting the two part Guild repair Caleb. I have a Guild D-40 also, which I bought new in 1978. Neck angle still good after all these years, thankfully.

Nice looking soundboard. Plenty of projection and with a nice balance across the registers coming through. It has quite a detailed sound. A nice instrument 👍🏻

Well spent hour or so watching your process & method Caleb. I’m in the process of doing 2 acoustics in a row that have the neck reset issue going on. The realignment techniques you have going on seem very workable & relevant to what I’m attempting to do. I liked the guild & thought it might something you were fixing for yourself. Love your work

I have been a builder and repairman on acoustics ( a few LP style too and custom electrics as requested.I) have a 38 year old D 40 . It is my routine "go-to" dread for play> As you would expect, it is time for bridge glue down and neck reset. I actually had a 3 digit SN D 40---#324; passed around and beaten to death and ended up in a trade with my build buddies for a primo OM, designed by me and my partners wirh the very best of everything and I did all inlay. But at 77 and separated from all of my tools. I approach my task very cautiously.. Any hints?

You changed the angle of the neck, that raised the fretboard quite a bit off the body, what are you doing, bending down the fretboard to the body?

maybe do a stack of masking tape on the dovetail tempoarily to get an idea of shim thickness and possibly save some time??
@zapa1pnt

Tape would give a false impression. It has too much "give" to it. Much better to do as he did. There's no way but the hard way. 😁✌🖖
@alnicospeaker

@@zapa1pnt Correct, you could use square matches stuck on with a tiny amount of superglue for that. You could omit that "mock-up" phase completely by cutting yourself a supply of shims of different thickness and tapers and just try which ones fit best.

I often see norms rare guitars do in house work on old martins, they do a neck set if required. But i can never pick up on a wedge under the fretboard extension from the videos they post. I wonder if they do?? Me personally, i do. But some dont, i just means living with that slight hump@@tanet
