Just watched it last night, and it really is the perfect modern movie. I felt that way about Her when that came out, but this just has a whole new idea of how things in life just begin and end, and then begin again

I think this warrants as a slight spoiler review. Way too much information given about the movie unnecessarily. I feel like Alonso does that often and I don't really see the point of it. I don't know if we ever really need to hear a detailed synopsis of the movie you're reviewing. People probably already know the gist of the movie if they're looking at a review of it on KZitem.

Na, there're just too many insanely good films in 2021, this film would make it to top 10 of any other year but didn't for me in this jam packed year. It isn't even my favorite Joachim Trier film to date, which is not to say it's a bad film, but far from perfect.

10/10 movie. I'm generally not too up to date on foreign films and I have a hard time comparing them to US films. But for this one, you should have no problem being immersed in it, regardless of the language barrier. There is so much depth in this movie, so much character development, insanely good writing and pacing. Usually, I'm not a fan of films with random dream sequences, where they're under the influence or some sort of daydream stuff. Usually, because it's a waste of time and ruins the pacing. It absolutely doesn't in this movie and it's such a small part of it. Renate Reinsve should win an award for this, what a fucking performance. A+

I just saw the movie ; it is great , very good script with a well driven character analysis and development, but what makes this movie really astonishing is Renata´s performance . Her gestures and movements are so natural and magnetic that I couldnt take my eyes off her .Definitely the best performance I have seen last year .

The title doesn’t actually refer to her or any one in the film. More so it’s about being human and how sometimes in the quest to find yourself you mess up and make mistakes where you feel like you are the worst person in the world at the time. Beautiful film about life and things don’t always go how you think they will.

Trier wanted the movie to have a fable element (hence the old woman narrator in the middle). Also, he wanted to portray a bobcat living among house cats-resisting, surrendering, eventually accepting to domestication (or life). The peak of this story telling is clearly the scene where the time stopped-the cat is finally free! The intention is admirable but the delivery is not so much-it went too heavy on the romance or infatuation part. Didn't work for me. Much better than Louder than Bombs though.

The film actually takes place over a chunk of time. She’s mid-20s at the beginning, turns 30 in the middle, and is ambiguously in her early 30s at the end.

@@raymondzrike I felt throughout the movie that she's too mature to be going through relationships like this, which is just one of the many things that distracted me from this otherwise well crafted film. They should have made her younger (barely in college at the start, and late 20s in the end).

I enjoy watching BAD reviews after coming home from the cinema, which I have just done for this movie. As I've always seen the movie in question, spoliers don't bother me and I (actually) enjoy Christy and Alonso tying themsevles in knots attempting not to spoil... But you guys are hopeless at it! The scene where they don't cheat is a really good scene but you totally spoil in this review. Haha. Anyway, good movie (and review).

If "she" had been a "he" everyone would know what a shit we were dealing with. ( BTW- I never met a "hunky" guy who could shop in the young men's section for his clothes- silly me, I thought the point was that all the performers were kind of average looking.)

Amazing how so many people misunderstand the title. It's not literal. The filmmakers are not declaring they present the worst person in the world (e.g. Charles Manson). The title is not descriptive. It's emotional. It's the guilt the character feels because of her decisions. This is spelled out when the younger boyfriend narrates, "I felt like the worst person in the world," regarding ending his earlier relationship. The writers didn't want to be as on-the-nose as having the lead character utter those words, so they had a supporting character say it.

I couldn’t disagree more… Watched this movie with little to no expectations… didn’t know anything about it, but did know that it had a bit of a ‘buzz’ It started off OK. Seemed like a sophisticated urban story of rich ‘westerners’ with some existential angst ( growing up, finding yourself, etc, etc. ) issues. A ditsy main protagonist ( is it Dakota Johnson?, no... but it could be her young doppelgänger, couldn’t it? ) finds herself in a relationship ‘with a sorted, yet excruciatingly boring guy’ ( He draws adult comic books… and has a creepy vibe, as only an actor playing a comic obsessed nutter could possibly pull off. ) So she runs off and has a fling with a guy, after sniffing his sweaty armpits. It’s another one of those films… that if you’re a critic, you can’t diss it. Because... ‘at least its trying to do something a little different’ Even if the stand out moments, all feel like they fell out of a commercial advert shoot. There’re some interesting moments, a few arresting, cinematically sweeping ideas… but as a ‘whole’ it fell apart in the final third… as the guy she dumped becomes terminally ill and she’s forced to reassess her carefree ditsy ways. It’s so badly handled, so saccharin and obvious… that it spoils anything genuine ...the makers were trying for, up to that point. It’s one of those films that you can see merit in it, whilst viewing… but by the time it’s over, you sort of feel cheated.

It took me two watches two months apart to finally grasp the full effect of this movie, but I did finally end up loving it. That said, it's interesting that I'd rank this movie last out of the 5 frontrunners for International Feature this year (those being this, Drive My Car, Hand of God, A Hero and Flee).
@zxbc1
2 жыл бұрын
International feature is a hugely competitive field this year, I doubt this movie has a chance. I liked it but think the emotional arc especially towards the end is kind of forced and isn't earned. Also I find this movie lacking humor and light heartedness and leaned too heavily onto the melodrama. There's a reason Woody Allen films on similar topics are more enduring and beloved.
