“Even if it’s false, people believe in God because it makes them feel good, and why not?” - this sounds like something an atheist would say! Crucially, a person who acts like God exists is not a theist, but an atheist, since despite their desires and actions, they still don’t truly believe in God’s existence.

I agree with you on principle, but I will say that no, you absolutely can control what you believe. Technically speaking, you can’t “control” what you believe, but by that standard, you cannot control who you are or any choice you make. If we’re talking about the will you have when choosing which donut to buy, then yes, you absolutely can choose what you believe. People constantly look at every fact against what they believe, and decide “I am going to give my gut feeling undue amounts of trust.” Humans are built to want to be able to trust themselves, and when they are proven logically wrong, they can decide to fall back on the idea that their instincts are so compelling that surely, they must be from a god. You convince yourself that it is true simply by repeating it over and over. And that’s a choice, as much as anything else a human can choose.

The difference is quite simple. Human rights are a social ideology to create a better world. Believing in God for happiness is as simple as taking drugs to feel good. But this is not a basis for a better, more educated and more successful society. Just for a slightly happier company (maybe). Besides, you don't have to believe in God to be happy. There are many other options and it is not a social obligation for a better world. Therefore it is difficult to claim that it can be considered a social ideology.

What argument is he responding to? If he's responding to the stance that morality is a meme (in the Dawkin's sense) for maximizing happiness (a relatively common ethical stance), then this is a decent rebuttal. The rebuttal would be better if it weren't also attempting to advance a belief in god and instead was just using it as a contradiction by absurdity. At bottom, a morality is not for maximizing happiness (or at least minimizes suffering) though. We're tempted to claim it is because we hold a morality that values happiness (or at least opposes suffering). However, moralities exist that value growth and require suffering while leaving happiness as something that may happen incidentally while producing strong people. At best, we can say, we want morality to promote the general welfare or adopt a metaphysics where properties only exist in interactions (adding an implicit "to me" after every claim).

I don't mean to imply "just be delusional", but "you can't choose what you believe" is inaccurate. You can believe anything that aligns with your lived experience regardless of its correspondence with objective reality. Negatively applied, this is how people are gaslit. Positively applied, this is a principle in CBT (a psychological practice which involves replacing unhelpful beliefs by living out helpful beliefs). In both cases, your beliefs aren't flipped instantly, but your beliefs are modified over months to years of disputing old beliefs and living out new beliefs (whether by someone gaslighting you or by engaging in CBT). The important part is that the belief cannot contradict your lived experience. For most people, this excludes the existence of a god that is together good, knowledgeable, and powerful (i.e. the problem of evil). However, some change different aspects of their worldview to ignore this problem, like redefining evil as the absence of good. Slight tangent on the last point, but reasonably, they could also abandon moral realism (i.e. good and evil exist as more than a useful fiction), and they could define good as whatever god values. Yes, this is a real argument Christians have made: God is the embodiment of good, so whatever he wills is good, even if that's something we "ignorantly" perceive as evil.

Second, if you're going by the Bible, it contradicts itself thousands of times. Thirdly, why couldn't something god do be bad? "Because he's perfect, and all-knowing, and thus would know best what is good or bad." @Based Upper Class Homosexual What these people often imply is that religion is meant to be substitute for certain negative human proclivities being the lesser of two evils as though it were a vehicle to subvert public opinion into eventually outlawing abortion, sex changes on children, changing economic policy, inspiring motivation and productivity etc. Whether you agree with one or more of their goals it doesnt change the fact their methods are extremely sinister, I`d even say totalitarian. And it isnt even true religion makes people happier, maybe for some but not the entire population. For a lot of people religion has the opposite effect inspiring feelings of worthlessness thanks to the suppression of personal autonomy that goes hand in hand with this type of thinking. The left may have lost the plot entirely but the right hasnt learned a goddamn thing since they lost power decades ago.

I wonder if sheer desperation might not be a strong enough impetus to force human beings to make the leap into belief. For example, might not an everyday atheist mother find, upon the death of her child, that her only way to hold onto sanity is to leap into a belief in a heaven where her dead child now lives, awaiting her arrival. Better than literally jumping off a cliff?

Therefore he believes that he knows the definition of knowledge which he believes is a type of belief. He thus must know what a "belief" is, but to know is to believe, so he has a belief that knowledge is a belief. So to know what a belief is, means you must have a justification that it is a belief, that belief has to be true, and he has to believe it. So a belief is true and justified and believed so belief is known, which means he believes belief is true, justified and believed. Alex's philosophy is a belief without justification about knowledge being a belief with justification. The people that tell you that you cannot believe without a reason, believe that without a reason. It is from this deluded philosophical position that one concludes that one cannot delude themselves, however that conclusion is only possible by deluding yourself to it. So it is possible to delude yourself into believing something. So in fact, I am saying the opposite of what you asked, I am saying that those who believe in god do not have to have any reason to do so. They just can and some of them just do.

@@sheikhrayan9538 Do you understand what "secularism" means? It doesn't mean anti-religion! Secular just means indifferent to religious beliefs. So a secular government is not built on teachings from a religion (quran, bible, etc.), but on ideas that humans in that country consider important (liberty, equality, freedom of thought, etc.). You can still practise your religion in a secular country, but your religion is not going to dictate how other people will live their life. It will also not punish people based on rules invented by your religion. @@ha.alamin That argument itself is already a red herring from the actual question at hand, god's existence.
