Then there are days that just need Destroy all Music by the flying Luttenbachers, which might err on the side of development sometimes. The Shaggs are very interesting to me in that they had actually never heard music to any extant. They were basically given cheap instruments by their father and told to go become pop stars. So it's sort of like listening to aliens who had were dropped off on earth, given instruments and learn how to play without absolutely no instruction or exposure to music.

The Shaggs actually have a really interesting backstory. From Wikpedia: The conceptual beginning of the Shaggs came from Austin Wiggin's mother who, when her son was young, had predicted during a palmreading that he would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two daughters after she had died, and that his daughters would form a popular music group. The first two predictions proved accurate, so Austin set about making the third come true as well.[8] Austin withdrew his daughters from school, bought them instruments, and arranged for them to receive music and vocal lessons. The Wiggin sisters themselves never planned to become a music group, but as Dot later said, "[Austin] was something of a disciplinarian. He was stubborn and he could be temperamental. He directed. We obeyed. Or did our best."[9] Austin named the Shaggs after the popular shag hairstyle and as a reference to shaggy dogs.[9] In 1968, Austin arranged for the girls to play a regular Saturday night gig at the Fremont, New Hampshire, Town Hall.

If a guy at the campfire thinks he can impress chicks by putting them asleep with Wonderwall hit them with "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears; that'll wake them right up and they'll start woo-ing. Then finish the performance by smashing the guitar in the campfire and admits the torrent of glowing cinders you shout: SLAYEEEER!!! He absolutely hit the nail on the head. Metric tons of commercial or relatively unknown (outside of a niche group) artists may (and almost undoubtedly have) struggle(d) to churn out a hit single, let alone have famous EPs and/or albums. From what I've noticed, albums, by and large, are becoming a dead format in the world of music production. So, instead of creating songs tied to a list of adjacent themes, like with albums, you can instead release singles or EPs and not be as bound by yourself or fans to maintain musical consistency or your "sound." That is a tremendous silver lining!
@ToveriJuri

@ReformedRedpill
3 жыл бұрын
The problem is that it's so overplayed that it becomes tiring. It's a good song overall and the recording has a lot of color added into it throughout the track, it's just overplayed so people lose the connection to it. I would say it has standed the test in time because younger generations always pick it up, get obsesed with it, then put it down. It's a vicious cycle that will likely never be broken because younger generations will always find it. Kind of like Smoke in the Water, Enter Sandman, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Stairway to Heaven.

The I-vi-IV-V chord sequence is called the "1950s Progression" because so much pop music from the '50s and early '60s was written used that progression. Actually it's much, much older than that; many classical composers included it (especially Mozart, and sometimes Beethoven) and English folk-songs from the 1500s often use the same chord sequence

Thanks for introducing me to The Shaggs. After digging a little deeper, I came to the conculsion that a) they knew exactly what they where doing b) they sound exactly the way they want to sound (well, maybe, if they could go back, they'd tune their guitars before recording it) and c) Dot Wiggins actually knows how to read and write sheet music, and she had written out all of the songs. And with that, they are in line with more well-known musicians like Frank Zappa (who called The Shaggs "better than The Beatles"), Captain Beefheart and other musicians with a less music theory driven (or "the harmonic style of 18th centry european musicians" driven, to quote Adam Neely) approach to music. If I had a cat, I would name her "Foot Foot".
@Tufhhuyy
2 жыл бұрын
In all seriousness, though it's severely under-developed, their music is similar to that of the modern indie and especially anti-folk genres. I would have really liked to see what they could have done with more practice. Like, the ideas are fully there, they just weren't able to get the ideas out as cohesively as they wanted. I like to think that, although they did technically become big, they would have been much, much bigger if their dad hadn't pushed them into recording so soon.

I was listening to some of the lesser known songs from Van Halen last night, and I was blown away by just how annoying David Lee Roth's vocals can often be. Sometimes he sounds good, but then there's the other 90% of the time when he's yelling wwwooooohhh. I liked Van Halen most in the 80s, before the internet, where you learn how much of a douchebag he is.

Even though Philosophy Of The World is bad, I also think it’s funny as well. It’s like they were intentionally trying to put it on the offbeat.

PLEASE tell me you're doing a Lulu retrospective for this November's TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!?? When I heard the "Kinski" line in a record store with my bud I legit nearly collapsed into the CD displays in laughter. I COULD NOT BELIEVE that line opened the album.

The Shaggs sucked because their father forced/abused them into playing that shit. His mother made some prediction about his life when he was young so when most of it came true, he went about to ensure the prophecy would be completely fulfilled... so, by some miracle of abuse and psychosis, we were blessed with The Shaggs.

Shred you nailed it. I feel the worst songs are the songs that could be good if they just had some musical correctness and timing issues fixed. You know the songs your ear wants to listen to but your soul flat rejects them completely like a bad liver transplant

"Dirty Window" is worse than that song "Friday" and here's why: Its fucking Metallica. They know how to play, they know how to write songs, theyve been doing it FOREVER and sold a SHIT-TON of albums. To write AND record AND put out something that bad is just shameful.

As 'Awnold' said, "I'll be Bach you be Beethoven." I actually heard someone say they thought the Shags were a newly discovered old gem. "WHAT!!!???" Just shook my head and proclaimed he needed to go get hearing aids. "Please do make me hangry. You won't like me when I'm hangry." Tell Pinocchio to tell a string of lies, then drill holes in his nose. You've just provided him with his own flute. John Cage's 4'33" was the best and least annoying song in the video. At least the clapping was in tune , in time and on beat. Steven Anger, Stanger, Street Anger, St Anger is an album or worst songs in a worst of video all it's own. This is a very good lesson for composers.
