I think the real underlying element behind Nick's "too many options" problem is their piss poor website design and layout, as well as their confusing naming conventions. Many of their boots vary only slightly in height and design, yet for some reason warrant a completely different name and entity. They don't have nearly enough pictures to demonstrate the vast options available. You literally have to scroll halfway down a product's page just to find the description of the dang boot! They dont do very much to help guide a potential customer toward picking out the right options for them. I 100% guarantee you if their website was streamlined to be easier to navigate and more comprehensive in their different options, there'd be less complaints about having too much to choose from. I'd even argue their sales would improve - people would have more courage to commit to a purchase if they were able to compare their options with no fuss. P.S. A great example of this kind of improvement would be Indian motorcycles 3D bike customizer.

My experience with PNW boots and their manufacturers: Nick's: ordered a custom Tactical; the wait time was as stated and they're great boots (best I've owned to date), they're just crap with communication....all email when order was placed, construction started, ordered shipped. Yes, they have a ton of options but I had a pretty good idea what I wanted. Their fit guide was clear and accurate. They polish up great; no issues. JK: ordered the 300Xs, I think I got lucky because my size was in stock. Their sizing guide is more complicated and I fell in between sizes (for width) so I went down and they fit fine. I've have issues with the boots, namely the leather being "pruney" or wrinkled, the backing on the hooks not being completed seated and rubbing on the tongue, heel rub/slip (yes, I tried thicker socks) and the sock liner peeling away on the front (not a problem donning but it peels back while doffing). I solved that problem with ordering their thin insoles, which had the side effect of getting rid of the heel slip. However, even with three applications of Obenhauf's boot oil (included with the boots) they still look wrinkly and don't take a shine very well (thinking it's the leather, remember their sub-$400 boots). My factual review on their website (three stars) butthurt a lot of folks/fanatics and got several 'thumb down' votes. Truth hurts, sorry. I looked at their custom option; clear and well thought out although I don't care for the $100 add for a custom build, but that's offset with a $100 discount if you kick out the build time to 26 weeks (which puts you in Nick's territory). Great things about JK is all the documentation you get with your boots, as well as the aforementioned Obenhauf's and a phone call thanking you for your purchase. White's: wanted a moc toe to add to my collection/rotation and like the look of the Perry Select but for a similar price point the Grant Stone Field boots look a bit more finished/refined (padded collar, toe cap and the stitching on the vamp). I was saying 'yep' while watching this video because I agreed with most of your points.

I was really unimpressed with the wesco Mr Lou’s that I got. One boot was slightly smaller than the other and there was a couple nails sticking up inside. I am a firefighter, and unless your department requires you to wear NFPA certified boots, even wearing boots that meet the standards isn't worth the cost and loss of general durability. If you're in the fire to the point that you have to worry about your sole melting and the thread burning you've got bigger problems. There's a reason Nicks recommends against it if your department will let you.

I can’t tell how many times I’ve canceled the ordering process on Nick’s website. I actually just did again cause I need black boots with steel toe for my new job, but the lead time and options make me reconsider. 100% agree with you on this. I'm a Whites/Wesco guy and its pretty pathetic what has happened with the prices and lead times. I order all my custom Whites through Bakers, and its a lot of boots, and I just looked back at my orders on my account, and the price went up over $200 in less than 3yrs. I used to pay $600(before 20% off) for a 7" Custom Whites bounty hunter with a toe cap, single celastic toe, and liner($70 in options). The exact boot is now $860!!! The same options went from $70 to $160! Now, the options are no longer discounted, too! All this in under 3yrs. Its totally turned me off from Whites and I LOVE their boots. Wesco is killing themselves with their lead times. 14-20 months for a boot?!?! C'mon guys, get with the program.

Amen on the White's. Was gonna order another pair of 7" smokejumpers but in a slightly more premium leather. The subtotal was close to $1000. My first custom pair in olive waxed flesh was near $600. I keep hearing this nonsense in the PNW world of "Ohh there just arent workers". Yeah you have to hire, train and invest in them. What do think the Army does lol. As if a welder or a Circle K employee just lasts and bottoms boots. This gets to the heart of the insanity of this industry. Banks and Colleges exist, get a loan, train people move on....
@cloveroak5492

#1 you have to have people that are capable and interested in being trained. #2 Have you thought about where they are located??? Spokane & Scappoose??? There is a pretty limited pool of people looking for work, and fewer that want to do that. This isn't a major city or something you can work remote from. Frankly, I'm shocked 4 builders (actually more) are able to find as many employees as they have.

Isn’t that just stupid and goofy with the JK Boot sizing scheme. If I measure at 10 D, why not just make the sizing of the boot congruent, why deduct one size. It’s so infuriating when clothing companies do this. A 30” waist should mean a 30” pant, a size 10 should be a size 10.

My biggest problem with NICK’s is that they have 400 leather options, but barely 5 pictures to demonstarate!
@JimKiralfy
Жыл бұрын
I think part of the issue with Nick's options is the way they use different names for similar products depending on the configuration. For example, an Urban Logger built on the HNW last becomes the Urban Drifter. An Urban Logger with a V-bar sole, dogger heel and rolled top becomes the Robert. A Robert on the HNW last becomes the Falcon. And so on. But since you can spec a lot of these options separately anyway, it gets confusing to tell exactly what it is you're ordering. Sometimes I think it might be easier if they just listed the base design, and then let people pick these options as they want, without necessarily having to give everything a new name.

An important note about White’s. They run 20%off during Father’s Day and Thanksgiving. So their flagship boot smokejumpers at $675 becomes $540. So for $540 you get a handwelted stitch down constructed boot!!! No other PNW boot maker can beat that.

I'm from the PNW but British Columbia and you need to look at Dayton Boots out of Vancouver. They've been around for decades and are still popular here in Vancouver. Back in the 1970s local bars used to have signs banning Dayton's. Interesting story

When I last heard (about 2 yrs ago), Dayton weren’t making anything in-house anymore; their stock is all imported now. Sad considering their long and significant history in Vancouver. However, BC still has Viberg, which are considered to be best in class by many boot aficionados. If they were included in this video, I’m confident the price would’ve been the criticism 🤯

I’m literally 3 hours from Spokane and I’ve been to all four shops. I have both work boots and casual PNW boots. I’ll say this, #1 White’s is like going to Kenny’s shoes in the 1980’s, even if they don’t fit the sales staff will still try to make a sale. #2 Nicks is great if you’re a hipster and well on their way to being the next White’s #3 Tim is a complete douche bag and the buisness model of not only how he treats lower level employees but the expedite fee to get your boots sooner than those who are already waiting on their boots shows what they are about and their sizing system is a complete joke #3 Walk into Frank’s like I did, Frank came out and personally fit me and Michelle came over and not only shown me all the leather options but took the time to help me design my boots. They are the last of the old salt of the earth types and if you read enough they have literally the lowest customer complaints while JK complaints beat out the other three in their entirety

The problem I have is that ordering a custom fit boot over the Internet, even with the professed expertise of the company reps, is hit and miss, even when you already have a pair of boots that fit well. E.g. have a pair of Nick's Roamers 10.5D for work that I got sized through their fit kit process. Fit well, but just just a little long. What size for the Falcon? Rep said try 10D. Okay, waited six months, too tight! Get me 'nuther pair 10E. 'Nuther six months. Perfect fit. Okay, what size for Renegade pull on? Stick with 10E says Nick's. Eight months later, loose fit. Outstanding products. I'm very proud to wear them. But only 50/50 on great fit ordering online.

For whatever reason, these boot companies have shitty websites. It's like you're navigating the internet in 2005. Whites may be the oldest company and have the highest prices, but at least when you clean on a boot model all the color options are on a boot model page. why does every different leather color need its own page????? they'll have one model of a boot and 12 different color options and have every color option as its own page.
