It's sad to see how the dex limitations have affected competitive by giving players less room for original teams. For example, a mono grass could try to use rillaboom's grassy surge to boost serperior's contrary leaf storm and, as mentioned in the video, bug type could be so much more viable with the return of mega evolution.

And ones that DO have a high BST are given some balancing factor that works too well, like Regigigas and Slaking. Normal, on paper, is a good typing, but Game Freak is too scared to make viable normal types. It's a shame, because it's my favorite type.

@@captaindemozan2700 It's because Normal types were way too good in Gens 1 - 3. As soon as more Steel types (viable ones especially) started coming around, Normal's days were numbered. Totally relate, I run mono ice on a special showdown server in not only monotype, but in uu and even ou, and not only do I get satisfying wins, but I actually manage to get them somewhat consistently In case you are curious about this “different showdown server” let me give you details on the following changes: Mega abomasnow now has access to mountain gale (hisuian avalugg’s signature move) and it gets slush rush upon mega evolving. Glaceon now gets slush rush and earth power, and paired with having hidden power, it has near perfect coverage. Beartic now is ice/fighting, and has cc along with a buffed ice hammer that essentially is now and ice type version of eq. Mega glaile now has refrigerate fake outs and quick attacks. Garm gained ice hammer in exchange for 10 atk. Sevii Zeb was introduced, which is an ice/electric regional variant of unova Zeb who is actually a special attacker and can choose from two good abilities in lightning rod and a buffed illuminate for more accurate thunders and blizzards. Those are changes based on most of the mons I used on my various mono ice, and while I run hail in ou, in uu and monotype, I actually run spikes balance/semistall. Why is it semistall? It’s because of the two mainstays that I always bring no matter the mono ice team: Avalugg and dewgong. The former now has filter and it makes it an extremely effective physical tank, as well as increasing its hazard removal for the team, I even run iron defense+body press to beat most set up sweepers. Meanwhile gong…. It ended up getting ice scales and it has become infamous for making the server rage. Ice scales makes dewgong almost immortal on the special side. How immortal you may ask….? 32% From a zard y FOCUS BLAST. Yeah I don’t think I need to say more. Also to top that all off, thanks to the replacement of freeze with frostbite, frost breath basically becomes a stronger ice type scald that ignores boosts and crippled special attackers. And gong happily abuses it. Also, you may be wondering how it checks stuff like zard over the course of a game if it has no reliable recovery. Well good news, it can run rest talk viably. Which also ruins status attempts from poison and paralysis. Lastly, one thing to mention, this special showdown server also has a discord for monotype(called the type master discord) and along with me, the best player in that discord is a mono bug user, so seeing his type on the list will likely make him buzz over to freeze’s location.

I got to around 1450-1500 elo with mono fighting. it is FAR worse than rock, and it has nothing that can save it. If you see a tapu lele it's a 6-0, any good psychic or fairy team has lele, so 1/9 of types you fight against you auto lose. Let's see what else. It has to rely on Kommo-oh for 90% of the role compression duties. rocker, defensive tank with dragon's great resists, gengar stopgap, special attacker, etc once Kommo-oh and Coballion die, your team falls apart defensively and you start sacking left and right Rock has Shuckle, a pretty good webs and rocks setter, and even though it has no defensive utility, Nihilego and Tyranitar are really good on webs teams, and tyranitar in particular has really good coverage. +2 terrakion has no switch ins to its 3 coverage moves, (eq/megahorn + cc and stone edge beat everything, but you cant run both), and Cradily can attempt to try and win vs water Long story short, rock has some synergy going, even if it's type is very bad defensively, with it's good setup sweepers and hazard setters, even if it has similar defensive problems to fighting. Fighting literally loses to mono-steel a good portion of the time. A winning matchup. It also gets swept easily by Moltres-G on monodark if the player can do a bit of postitioning, and mono-ice can beat it through zolt and alolatales, as well as the rare chople kyruem for mono-bug. I'll admit it usually wins vs Mono-Normal, but like geez, that's setting the bar low. And mono rock ig but it's quite rare. It also does surprisingly decent vs water due to Croak and Virizon, but beating water is done much better by grass, who can also beat a relevant type in Ground, unlike Fighting who can't beat most of their super effective matchups. It doesn't even come close. Fighting is abysmal this gen. (btw im the commenter from freezai's monofighting vid)

I feel like mono grass perfectly draws the line between viable and unviable types. Everything above it is usable if played well (Ex : Psychic) and everything below it just feels like you're putting yourself at a disadvantage for no reason. Grass feels like a bit of both, it has a great shot at beating neutral matchups, and even matchups that could be considered to not be in your favor (Steel, Bug, Ice) if played perfectly. But at the same time, Flying is everywhere, Poison is a nightmare to deal with and Cinderace was created to 6-0 you. I just feel like it's a high risk high reward type of team, it can shine in the hands of a great player but why not just go for a more consistent type ? Thanks for coming to my TED Talk about mono grass. Also, fuck Cinderace.

I was having a lot of fun with Monotype Rock in doubles since Lyanroc can sand rush and be an excellent sweeper, and I'd run it alongside Sand Stream Gigalith or Tyranitar. Plus, sandstorm boosts rock special defenses to try and buckle down defensively and then run a trick room team with Diancie or Stakataka. Stab Rock Slide can be a strong tool in doubles, and there are a few rocks that get a useful Wide Guard.

Tyranitar is, well... tyranitar. Rhyperior with assault vest makes a good offensive tank with edgequake and coverage like ice punch and heat crash. Barbaracle is perhaps the best shell smasher around besides the non rock cloyster, and Nihilego with power herb meteor beam can spiral out of control very quickly. Lycanroc dusk is a great choice band revenge killer, and there are other strong options like Tyrantrum and Terrakion. Of course, this is all held back by the weaknesses, and mono fighting is nearly impossible to beat with rock.

I just need to adjust my normal and psychic teams. I gotta say while playing, i feel the safest with ghost, with only dark teams being serious threat, normal and ghost teams may be tricky, but for the rest... I really feel the safest with ghost team, might be related with having both eviolite dusclops and corsola that allow to survive and override almost every enemy sweeper, i set dusclops to counter special enemies and corsola for physical via strength sap. The team I got most loses consecutively is with bug and grass, pretty much every team has a fire, rock or ice move that can harm most of my team, or the whole specially via stab

The niche of rock is access to sticky webs and extremely powerful offensive threats like Scarf Terrakion, Power Herb Meteor Beam Nihilego and Tyranitar to take care of weakened teams. The type was definitely better in Gen 7 with access to Diancie-Mega and Golem-Alola, but there are some cheese strats with Weakness Policy Rhyperior or Storm Drain Cradily to nullify some of the problem mons that rock can run into. The single biggest issue with rock is a lack of good ground immune Pokémon, since rock/flying options are generally gimmicky or straight up bad. Being unable to avoid hazards or earthquakes, while your only good spinner is Coalossal, is definitely the biggest weakness of Gen 8 rock type

It's funny cuz back in Gen 4 when I played a lot with my friends and such I ran a mono Rock team that was basically all fossils and it was one of the better teams in that kind of playground context

I thought I should give context on mono bug as a mono bug connoisseur. In gen 6, bug types were definitely in the top 5. Mega Beedrill, Pinsir, and even Heracross brought solid physical attacks and coverage, Volcarona could sweep, Forretress and Shuckle set up or removed hazards, and Volbeat prankster tail glow into baton pass or twave + confuse ray or tailwind to help maintain speed advantage. In gen 7 the type fell off in popularity, especially with many defensive teams proving too difficult to punch through. Then, in gen 8, but lost so many of its core Pokémon. No more mega sweepers, no prankster Volbeat, and no way to keep up with power creep besides Centiskorch countering fire teams as long as they don’t have rock moves. I think what bug needs more than anything are more consistent physical attackers, less Crustles and more Scizors. Some of the leaked Pokémon look very promising!

in gen 6 I've partaken in a monotype tournament on my discord. I ended up winning with a normal type team. every player was allowed to use 1 legendary My team was Arceus Blissey Ditto Pideot (Mega) smeargle Spinda (contrary + superpower) it's been a while but I sure remember that that team hasn't lost a single battle when that tournament ran also I only used arceus in one battle literally. Sure normal type ain't the strongest one in the game but it can become a real threat when you know how. (dunno if gen 9 would make much of a difference sind that tournament was in 2015 but I remember beating a dragon monotype team confidently)

My "solution" for each one on the list Grass - Let em use Shaymin Sky Bug - Let em use Pheromosa Normal - Fuck it just let em play by inverse battle rules Fighting - Let em use Zamazenta Crowned Rock - Permanent sandstorm and rocks fuck it

As someone who moved from mono Bug to mono Fighting, that type shouldn’t be as low as it is. Despite the type itself being miserable, it has enough amazing Pokémon with enough synergy to reliably beat most teams down quickly, including some of its weak types. But that’s exactly what mono Bug has, plus a garbage matchup against Water: what pushes Fighting over the edge IMO is Toxicroak exactly. This Pokémon gives Fighting a defensive backbone that the offensive types on this list simply do not have. Great video, and you did an excellent job explaining why each type is as good or bad as it is. I’d personally say the worst types are: (worst to best) Rock, Normal, Grass, Bug, and Ice, with a dishonorable mention to post-ban Dark and Fighting.

I think Fire could on the list instead of Grass. It only really has good matchups against trash types (Ice, Grass, Bug) as well as Steel. And in my experience it often gets 6-0d by the random ground sweeper (ex. Moxie Scarf Krook with rock coverage) or any swift swim sweeper. Hell, it has a hard time against random mons just carrying common rock/eq coverage since it’s such a bad defensive type. While grass is a worse type objectively, I think it performs better against more teams, as well as the most common ones.

As a fire player i feel they have plenty of resources to deal with their weaknesses. It is similar to electric in the frightening power that sun boosted moves can carry even when resisted. Cinderace is fast with flexible typing, heatran tanky with excellent typing and stallbreaking capabilities. Scarf victini V create will tear through almost anything and would probably be the best answer my team has to your krookodile example. You can hardly make a safe switch because of the sheer power of v create

3:02 Honestly, it surprises me that Bug is apparently good as an OFFENSIVE Monotype playstyle, considering that Bug is SE on 3 types, weak to 3 types... & RESISTED by SEVEN types. But yeah, it sounds like Monotype got really screw up by Generation 8. The loss of Z-Moves, Megas, & tons of Pokemon & moves.... Anyway, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!

Rock is underrated tbh. Sand stream T-tar and gigalith ensure big spdef. Nihelgo can act as a blissey with attacking stats. Cradily with water absorb can reduce one of the biggest threats over all. Terrakion has been underrated since gen 6 with faries, but with its big stats it’s a huge damage dealer. And lycanrock can also do big damage. Definitely not the best, but has way more potential than most people think. I got to like 13-1400 ish on showdown with a rock monotype team

As someone who's played a lot of Rock mono; it's not underrated at all, it's just bad. Having "big stats" and doing "big damage" doesn't really matter when the type itself is horrible defensively and lacks a lot of good synergy within itself. For example, while Water Absorb on Cradily is nice, it doesn't do much in other MUs other than maybe tank a hit or 2 and then die. Even then in the Water MU it won't stop Urshifu-R from 6-0ing your whole team with Close Combat (and Surging Strikes after Cradily has inevitably fainted at some point). Even in MUs where you'd THINK Rock would be good, like vs Bug, it's incredibly difficult to not get 6-0'd by Scizor, Heracross and Buzzwole should they get even a single advantageous turn. Rock does have some advantages like having access to pretty much every entry hazard and some pretty strong setup sweepers, but other than that, it's a "do-or-die" type in the worst possible way.

I play mostly mono-bug, usually can get around 1500 but it has so many hard counters that you just have no way to deal with, not even type-wise but just pokemon themselves that can easily solo a mono-bug team. You say bugs should play offensive, but most bugs can't afford that as their STAB is resisted by SEVEN types, and they usually have dogshit for coverage, having extremely limited movesets. Not only that, the moves they do get usually are not good, with fucking megahorn lottery being the best STAB offensive option. Did I mention that bug doesn't get any sort of terrain or weather either? GF had the perfect chance to make bug decent when they introduced fairy types, but instead just gave them an even bigger middle finger by making fairy resist bug.

To be fair, Grass can win vs Toxapex + amoonguss if amoonguss doesn't run clear smog. Zarude can run a mono dark bulk up set that beats both of them thanks to Taunt + Jungle healing. You need Drapion/Nidoking gone or sevearly weakened and spikes greatly helps with that. Sludge Bomb can be annoying but guss actually rarely runs it in mono poison anyway.

I'd have thought Poison would make the list since it has many weaknesses and some of the worst offensive options outside stalling. But I guess it does have decent enough Pokemon
@ohok9356

Poison only has two weaknesses and one type it can’t hit with poison moves, but it has Pokémon that which can cover those weaknesses and also it’s extremely good defensively, with all of its regenerator mons. As someone who’s played it, it’s overall middling. Not bad, certainly not a top contender, but overall, pretty decent.
