I read an article that Subaru may have sold less units with VB WRX in the US, they sold more units in Japan and Asia compared to the previous VA. I think problem with Subaru is facing is the STi's affordability. The WRX GT, TR, and TS already cost $42K. The STi would probably in the $50K range. I am pretty sure there will be an STi, but with current market now, I think Subaru knows its not the right time yet. Subaru will make sure that it will be able to compete and there will be buyers.

Subaru will wonder in a few years why they’ve lost a good subset of enthusiasts. There is room for a proper STI.

Seems like they are targeting the entry level enthusiast with these special editions. True enthusiast and performance drivers/racers want and can truly appreciate the drivetrain of the STI, but theres likely far less of a market for the top tier model when most people are just fine with a car that is $10k cheaper and still has power that’s in the ballpark of the higher end model. Their bread and butter is the wrx, and with so many other factors such as emissions, economy, etc it probably just made the most sense to drop the STI for the time being. I could be way off, but who knows.

You are probably close to the reality they saw. The cost and overall niche of owners willing to spend the money for an STi I can see being too small for Subaru to develop, but brand recognition is where I'd say they should at least do a small run.
