Whether its micromanaging projects to the point of extremity, or just that they like to throw money on the fires to "fix" problems, I don't really know. But I was also emulating NES on my pc and I liked pc better overall for gaming with 64 player BF1942 and dedicated servers. That old man knew what he was talking about though! As soon as playstation now and gamepass became a thing, I knew he was right and it's just a matter of time before the hardware disappears. One of his crazier predictions was that Microsoft would go under completely because people would get so fed up with them. The antitrust trial was still fresh so it wasn't unreasonable. If parents going out to buy Timmy the new gamebox Plus can't quickly and easily distinguish one version from the other, then you've already failed as a product because you're frustrating the customer BEFORE they've even made a purchase. It's a big part of why the Wii U flopped like it did. 2. Suck it up, accept the sunk cost fallacy and let a lot of the dev studios go independent again. MS loaded up on debt to buy a lot of studios without a whole lot to show for it. LIke Bruce said - they're given a mandated profit margin for success, so they're not going to take risks in this environment where one game that doesn't meet that minimum % means lots of talented people are told they're being laid off by MBA finance bros who only buy two games a year: Madden and the new CoD. 3. Stop competing with Sony on hardware performance, start focusing on quality and variety of games. It's why Xbox is more or less dead as a brand in asia.

Positive Brand Identity is SO huge, that's why I love Valve and using Steam they really haven't failed me yet and any time there's news about them it's always positive. It creates brand loyalty, sometimes for better or worse as far as internet discussions go but it creates it nonetheless. Sony as well, especially during the PS4 era, was coming out with banger after banger and when they did that "game sharing" commercial it was this awesome hilarious pro-consumer move and it made me happy with my purchase. Granted these days I genuinely regret getting a PS5 everything coming out on it is coming to PC so I should have just used the money and bought some more RAM or a better CPU or something. Also the exclusives PS5 has are like 2 at this point? FF16 was pretty cool I guess but not worth that $600. They got lucky my PS4 broke, I should have just replaced it with a used PS4. EDIT: LMAO that Kevin Spacey joke fucking killed me I had the video paused and I wasn't expecting it

I loved my Xbox One S I got it cheap and it carried me through the last generation, I was eager to buy a series X but there was nothing to get me to pay upwards of $500 for what is seemingly just a newer Xbox. I eventually bought a PS5 because God Of War absolutely blew me away and even then I sort of regret buying it because since then nothings really come out to justify the upgrade. I don’t really see myself upgrading to the next generation if there’s no new games to lineup the hardware let alone buying something as worthless as a PS5 Pro. If these companies really want people to buy their systems they need actual new games that are only available on those systems. Otherwise what’s even the point of having these consoles if I can just keep playing on that same Xbox one I got in like 2017?

I think i have heard game devs saying that they aren't using all of the console and don't see the need for a beefier machine. Then you have games that push to the edge of what the console can do each generation. I can't wait to hear the same thing when the PS6 comes out and they start talking about the PS6 Pro.

This is one of the things I definitely miss about the old days of the internet and for software. You had a dozen smaller companies that were there to make the best product then we're all snatched up by larger companies that have one purpose, deliver profit to shareholders. It's the same thing we see in movies, television, software, you name it. Consolidation of the myriad companies that used to exist consumed by larger companies that aren't concerned with making the best product just making the most profit.

I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360. PC/PS5, that's all I need. Would be great to have a Series X to play all my old Xbox games enhanced or whatever, but that's a "nice to have" not a "need to have". Besides, that chunk of cash is reserved for Switch 2 or whatever that ends up being.

Agree with Bruce. They are angling towards PC and Gamepass and since Xbox probably recognizes they can’t easily win in the hardware category so they are just going to try to win with software instead, and I’d say they are in the perfect position to do so.

5:38 I don't think that Phil Spencer bringing games to other platforms has caused less Xbox sales. Over the past couple years Xbox has given people very little reason to buy an Xbox since they had virtually no good big exclusives. They're probably going platform agnostic since the console sales are so low

I agree with the rumor of the 3rd party companies questioning supporting Xbox. Microsoft influenced a portion of the base to not buy games at retail, smallest amount of gamers, and most difficult environment for AAA developers to make games(Xbox Series S)

Bought a PS5, finally caved. BUT i still plan on only using said PS5 for Helldivers, maybe Spiderman since it came w it. Everything else, still Xbox. (Funnily enough, I started gaming on Nintendo, then PlayStation, then PC, then Xbox. Wild how that works over time)

Halo was once the height of single player and multiplayer gaming and now it’s not. Without quality games or franchises the likes of the Last of Us or God of War reboot, no one would get an Xbox over a PlayStation. There’s windows pc gaming but that defeats the purpose that Xbox was created for which was to have a box in the living room to prevent Sony or others from making the pc irrelevant. Funny how Microsoft was so afraid of the pc dying they made Xbox but now pc is doing better than Xbox.

It seems like xbox is stuck making "a box that sells games" rather than Microsoft becoming a game publisher/developer. The brand doesn't need to die, but maybe consoles do. Even sony could see nothing but profit if they just started dual releasing exclusives on pc and ps5.

I just dont see the point in buying an Xbox. You might as well save your money up for a bit longer and build a PC, you will get every game that's currently on Xbox, along with a massive and unbeatable PC game library. Even if you ignore PC and just focus on the consoles, Xbox doesnt have a compelling reason to buy it next to the PS5 or even the Switch. Every big budget Xbox exclusive seems to be problematic on launch day. Forza Motorsport 8 ia arguably the worst game in the franchise with tons of bugs and loads of missing content, Halo Infinite took 2 years to become good, Redfall sucks, Starfield has problems. Aside a few exceptions, PS5 and Switch exclusives are being received much better by fans and critics. The lack of good exclusives compared to other consoles, and the options that a PC offers, are both compelling reasons to not buy an Xbox.

I had the exact same thought of MS making Steam Machine-like Xbox branded PC/handheld a while back. That makes a lot of sense to me, especially if they can build their own Xbox-focused fork of Windows that actually works on a handheld and as a gaming focused desktop, not unlike SteamOS.

i dont think any xbox console actually made money for microsoft because they cost so much in R&D. The xbox was always a hardware honeypot for Microsoft to platform their software (games) as they are a software company first and foremost. I think the plan was to continue making xbox exclusives which made enough money for generations of xbox consoles to fund their software development. This formula changed when xbox gamepass made its way to other platforms (because it became so profitable and successful). Now Microsoft has what it always wanted, a profitable software platform which makes its way on all devices (cough cough windows OS)

They need to stop selling a weaker version, it doesn't allow any of their or third party software companies to properly use the hardware on the better hardware version, which means games are held back.....

honestly the the ecosystem killed the launch so many different consoles xbox one x, xbox series s, xbox series X it was confusing because they were still continuing to support the xbox one ecosystem in the new generation which created an imbalance of why should i buy a new console and by supporting multiple platforms it reduced availability of the console people actually wanted people had to settle for the S because it was the only thing available and then games have to be a nightmare to develop for because you gotta support all of these less powerful consoles.

Given the cyclical nature of all things (time is a flat circle, after all), I think the a pretty effective way for Microsoft to actually take the console world by storm is to do a new cool handheld. An Xbox handheld has never been done, and something like that would be really cool. I think the steam deck as the main competitor would be a good ring for them to enter as they sorta have the biggest visible hold on that market that isn't a switch. the sony handheld being streaming only makes it a very specific clientele, if xbox were able to do a cool handheld then that might give them a bit of life. I also am probably wrong.

Playstation player here. Xbox and Nintendo are the reason why PS tries so hard. Competition is good for us. I will say that I love the PS5 (I've owned every PS console). The game selection is pretty incredible. Xbox players are missing some incredible experiences (Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Last of Us...etc). But I feel like I missed out too on the whole Halo franchise. Just this week due to binging the show 'Halo' on Paramount+, I went out and bought the Master Chief Collection (MCC for $10!!) + Halo 5 (on the MS store $5)...so, I need to buy an Xbox now to play these; thinking of getting the Xbox Series S. I will say that Xbox console names are confusing af for noobs...took me a min to realize what the hell the order was lol - Xbox O, OS, OX, SS, SX - just NUMBER them!

I think the best play is definitely moving towards being an open platform/publisher. Given how much PC gaming has exploded in the past couple gens, I think it'd be wise for MS to lean into that advantage more. Xboxes are already running on (heavily) modified versions of Windows, so I don't think it'd be _too_ much of a stretch for them to bring more of that PC gaming experience to their consoles. Ease off the specialized hardware R&D and focus on making attractive console-esque living room PCs. Let it run Steam, let people upgrade some of the components, be supportive of more interesting peripherals and accessories, normalize the inclusion of real graphics settings so players can tune their own experience, etc. The market is more informed and tech savvy than ever, so I think we're long overdue for a console that stops babying players and actually offers some flexibility and power-user features.

Even after being overpriced and coming out a year later, the PS3 still ended up outselling the 360, eventually. The level that console exclusives were at in that era hasn't been close in the following generations because most of those titles come to PC too, the value in owning a console has severely diminished.

Because the 360 smashed the PS3 and eventually Xbox became complacent, had a few terrible ideas i.e. kinect, Sony revised the PS3 with much better models and had some great games at the end of the lifespan for that console. The terrible start to the Xbox One is still being felt at this point

To be fair, the 360 barely held 1% of the marketshare in Japan, and PS3 only outsold the 360 by 4 million units. So by those numbers, I'm guessing the PS3 didn't come out on top in the EU or the US.
