A synthesizer as a musical instrument, not a studio tool or a novel alternative to a plug in/vst. Wow Marc. The world really flipped on its head didn't it? Keep up the good work. I'm going to get back to my military overstock 12 turn 6 gang/deck wafer rotary switch that I plan to turn into a patchbay/controller. I appreciate your videos and participation with the moog foundation.

If I had to describe that Ring Modulator with one word, it would be "brassy". It sounds like with some fancy patchwork you could use that Ring Modulator to make a mean synth brass. Great vids, Marc! Everybody loves a good CS!

Hey, thanks, Nick! To each his own, but I want to remind people that it's possible to play synthesizers as musical instruments. There is an increasing shift towards using them as studio tools.

Another brilliant video! It's interesting how you mention it doesn't have to be "full-on Doctor Who" as I started off just making Dalek voice units for fan-built Daleks but now I'm really starting to explore the world of analogue synth circuits and your videos are providing a lot of inspiration!

I wonder why its taken me so long to subscribe to your channel Marc. I've been a devout viewer on all the foundation stuff you've done. Thanks for the wall of doom insight. Its nice that someone is talking about controlling synths with mixers and not just touch screens and ableton.

Vangelis used the CS-80 ring modulator as a performance instrument in itself. The "rapid tremolo" effect, or just whacking all the slider back at once to get a huge long delay ringmod sweep as he changed the sound or went over to a different synth.

Hey, Markus! Yes, there is a dedicated oscillator in the CS-50 Ring Modulator! That's how cool Yamaha was.

You can use it for great bowing effects, but it takes time to learn.

Hello. I wanted to ask you something in the ring modulator section. If you lower only the modulation lever in the ring modulator, without playing anything and with the volume to maximum output, there is an increased background noise similar to noise generator? Thanks.

well it's only OVERBOARD because you maxed out the controls... if you back off on the depth a bit you'd see that you can do some AWESOME stuff with it in between fully 'on' and 'off'

Which preset did you use to demonstrate the ring modulation?

I'm no technician, and I don't have any data on that... but I suspect there is really no similarity.

I've got a yamaha CS-80 V2 on my computer and am trying to get the 1980 doctor who sting out of it. You said in the video, that the ring modulator on the CS-50 is the same one found on the CS-80. But somehow the ring modulator doesn't behave in the same way. Any tips? Thanks!

+Ronan Hughes That's because CS-80 V2 is Arturia..... and Arturia didn't do a very good job with the softie. Try ME80 from Memorymoon if you want a realistic CS-80.

More or less everyone who tries the VST wants the real thing. Then realize that a fully working, repaired one go for £5000 or more and forget about it.
