The Yelverton Scandal
Chronicle of the Times Episode 64 | 1861
1861 and the whole of Great Britan is rocked by the Yelverton Scandal.
Major Yelverton, with the Royal Artillery, is the second son of Lord Avonmore, an Irish Peer.
Theresa Longworth, beautiful, educated and intelligent, can have her choice of men.
The two develop a relationship in Scotland. As their relationship deepens, Theresa insists on marriage. Major yelverton delays until he can delay no longer, and eventually concedes with the provision that the ceremony be kept secret
The couple have a Roman catholic wedding in Ireland.
They honeymoon together, living as man and wife, and even travel together under a passport as Mr and Mrs Yelverton.
Major Yelverton is eventually called back to his regiment whilst Theresa temporarily stays in Paris. She is astonished to hear of her husband’s marriage to another in Scotland,.
This case became incredibly emotive within England, Scotland and Ireland with both Irish and Scottish law stating that Yelverton is a bigamist, whilst English law says he is not.
There is the added angle - did he know that their marriage would be considered null when he agreed to marry her?
We take a look at this case that eventually changed marriage law within Great Britain.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
