Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. You've raised great kids Zarna (and Shalabh). By the time my mom had "the talk" with me, I had heard it all from my friends. And this was in the early 1970s in Mumbai. Sadly there was no KZitem option back then.

Well I’m raised in India and let me tell you Indian mothers are there with you through your periods , pregnancy etc . And They are very concerned and helpful about it.

It's bizarre how out of touch Zarna is. She said "It's very difficult being a boy out there. It's easier for the girls" about unplanned pregnancies. Seriously???? and also the idea that teen boys are meticulous about using protection just made me laugh. As a young adult living in India, I can say that Indian parents here are FAR more progressive that Indian parents in America. It's just convenient for Indian American parents to brush off important topics that are general knowledge here in India as just something that is American culture.

When I got it in 8th grade (I started school young) I did everything on my own, (also pre-google, KZitem, etc) acquired pads, tampons and learned on my own. My mother was and still is heartbroken by that, but I felt the lack of communication led me to do that, I just figured, ok I should do this. Not saying good or bad. Just my experience. The mom is so in denial about her kids having sex. Especially her daughter like she’s 20 away from home and in college ofc she’s having sex. Also totally disagree with the mom’s take that an unplanned pregnancy is worse for the boy. Uh hell no - it’s worse for the girl she’s the one CARRYING the baby for 8 months and has to deal with the body changes and aftermath of raising the baby. The mom seems to have very misogynistic regressive views where she seems to assume most girls are being sneaky and not taking birth control and messing up the guys life. Lol wtf

As an Indian teenagers we are not open about these kind of topics. Like we should but society would not appreciate us at all. For us having sex before marriage is like commiting a crime. We think that Spiritual love is more important. Modern generations are more encouraged towards sex rather than true love. We Indian take loyalty and love very seriously. Even there was that One video which says that Indian moms do not say directly I love you to their kids. Oh well yes cause our moms do that with their affection and care, without actually telling us that she loves us.

I feel bad for Zoya the most… she’s such a sweet kid and she belongs to my generation and even my mom who is ultra conservative did a better job than this… Brij is very very intelligent socially he’ll be fine and probably protect the family… Zoya is so cute and hope she gets to go out some more and show the world how amazing she is… Veer is still a small kid and his generation is so different everything is so advanced for them… Zarna you are amazing and I know first kid is hard for most moms but I did not understand the point of this video… the kids know way more than you both… it’s ok to acknowledge that and really what we kids need is the safe space to talk and also the self confidence that we are amazing and precious inspite of our insecurities and differences as brown kids. Kudos to the kids in this episode!!!

I had friends with boyfriends in the 4th grade and my own first boyfriend was in 5th grade (holding hands, went to a school dance, etc). My 1st kiss was with my 3rd boyfriend... In 7th grade (he was in 9th grade). Because of this, I started having talks *very* early with my own children (age 8, starting with very basic information).

That's obviously very mean from someone who probably didn't also grow up with parents who never talk about things like that. I didn't even told my mum when I got my period because everything genitals related was shameful. She said nothing when she found out. They're doing a better job then most American parents and they're setting those kids for academic success and success in life, unlike the typical western parent who wants to be their friend and hang around with them rather than parent. Yes, they're not perfect, but I would rather have them in society than some leftie parents who believe all it matters is that their kid is happy

It wasn't always easy but I wanted my girls to know they could talk to me about everything because my parents did not talk about these things. Kids learn alot about sex in school but they don't always understand what they hear so a parent can help clarify things for them and at the same time explain the consequences of having sex too early or for the wrong reason.

Amazing to see your family having this conversation. So refreshing seeing an Asian talk like this. Love that your kids can tell you like it is.

Loved the episode but quite disappointed that Zarna didn’t offer the help Zoya needed when she got her first period. Despite all the Indian bashing she does with the ‘no toilet seat’ and ‘drinking tap water’ is risky jokes, Indian mums still do a better job at supporting their daughters during that time, not just the first period. Seems like Zarna is more westernised in her ways than the kids 🙄

All my mother told me when I got my period was that you can get pregnant now? And she walked out of the room but then she came back with medicine for me. Because I had cramps but that was all that was done. My girlfriend's that were a little older than me. Explained. Everything mother was shy about it, but she was Blunt.

I am impressed how parents try to open their kids on the topic,we as Indians or Pakistanis barely talk to our kids. Good job Zarna.!! The young parents who are raising their kids in US must watch it. It will be great help for them.

The conversation started when my daughters' elementary school asked for parent's permissions (and yes, I read them) and consented to sex education in 5th grade. We, as a family, went to a seminar that talked about periods and growth so my daughters wouldn't ever have to feel even a tinge of shame or embarrassment (that I did, growing up in India) around menses. I adore you Zarna, because you are the essence of every immigrant parent raising an American child and I feel like you get it and make us feel like while we mess up, in so many ways, we can still laugh about it, together as a family. My daughters joke about me being that typical parent and I myself point out the Asian-ness in me, to keep the conversations lighter and open and never to shut the door on us 🙌

I loved this conversation. Especially when your daughter said you never talked to us about sex 🤣🤣🤣. But very decent talk it was. All families should have this talk. Also, your husband’s voice is so soothing. He should do a podcast!!!! And you’re a super mom!!!!

Alright I'm an indian, I'm Zoya's age and I TOO have two brothers and this is how my parents and brothers react and talk when we are having any discussion. This is too relatable and good. I totally love Zoya she's amazing

After watching this, I appreciate my parents even more for giving me all this information at the right time. (btw, we live in India - because somehow if you are India, it is fine to not have given this talk?) Periods needs to be discussed before the first cycle. I can not imagine the panic this poor girl felt when she started bleeding with absolutely no idea as to why it was happening. 🥲 Also the reason why sex talk is so very important, 1. You don't want a bunch of max level curiosity teenagers, going and exploring things without any prior knowledge. 2. Precaution - unplanned pregnancies and STDs. Also Zarna, let's start at the very basic of being able to say the words. Unplanned pregnancy! I am glad that you had this talk though. Step in the right direction. 💪🏽

Parents needs to be more accepting here.. they were in denial and in shock yet whenever the daughter seems to call out their lack of guidance it apparently always ended up in joke. And then there's this indirect pressure to be "good" kid they expect.
