Enniscrone Golf Club was the biggest surprise of my Irish Golf Experience. I did a lot of research before my trip to Ireland. I read countless magazines, online reviews, books, talked to friends who frequently travel to Ireland, and watched KZitem videos. I read "A Course Called Ireland" by Tom Coyne when I finally built my original dream route and was motivated to venture on a route less traveled. I discovered Enniscrone on the new route and included a course to the main destinations. I thought Enniscrone would be a good addition amongst great courses. However, I underestimated Enniscrone’s greatness. It is amongst the most enjoyable courses I have ever played. Enniscrone offers more design variety and topography than the other courses played on this trip. It felt more like a composite of my golf experiences in Ireland. For an American using magazines and popularity rankings to find courses in Ireland, Enniscrone may feel like a course off the beaten path. There is a pattern whenever I discuss my trip with Irish golfers or veterans of Ireland Golf Trips. That is, their eyes always get big as they say, “Let me know what you think of Enniscrone?” as if to let me in on a big secret. The secret is that Enniscrone is one of the best golf courses in Ireland and one of the best pure fun golf experiences you can have in Ireland.
Enniscrone has some of the best routings in Ireland. The course is routed through, around, and over massive dunes. It also makes excellent use of the lower dunes found in the middle of the course. Enniscrone offers equal parts short and long par 3s, 4s, and 5s throughout the course. The second hole at Enniscrone is the first introduction to the dunes. It is a firm handshake, as double dogleg par five squirrels its way through a massive valley of dunes to reveal a plateau green sitting at the door of the Atlantic ocean. My favorite back-to-back holes in Ireland are the 12th and 13th holes at Enniscrone. Both are short par 4s, 12 is a climbing dogleg left that is just a little less than drive before the fairway dramatically drops off. The approach is a very short shot to a very elevated green, in which anything remotely short might roll back past the original approach. The 13th hole is a massive downhill drivable par 4 with multiple strategies available, presenting various options to attack, play safe, and bailout. The 13th hole is the highest point of the course, and from that vantage point, you can see all of Enniscrone, endless beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Ox Mountains. I could play 12 and 13 all day. The Sea, beach, and mountain backdrops frame the course and contribute to why Enniscrone is one of the best Irish golf experiences. Enniscrone is a must play, and one of a few courses that I feel will be a part of my future trips to Ireland.
