Heard him sing it in Gunsmoke and was mesmerized. I do admit he sang it better on the show but good is good. Thanks T. Bikel.

That’s the performance I was looking for. Blew me away. The best rendition of the song I’ve ever heard. 👍🏻

Same. Saw him on Gunsmoke and while researching him, found out the expansive talent he had.

I had never heard of him till I saw him on my favorite show Gunsmoke.Wow that voice was so booming and smooth to hear. Since then, I was searching KZitem for his songs. Amazing singer one of a kind.

I did like it better when he did it on Gunsmoke but his timing on this song is spot on

Perfect mimicry of the Irish American Western cowboy and/or Appalachian accent.

I hate to disagree; his singing of the ballad was the worst I've heard. His accent was poor: he stood out from the other "cowboys" like a sore thumb.

@@lawrencecoleman4872 What "other 'cowboys'"? Born in Austria, true; so in America crooning cow songs a maverick. But he sounds like American folksinger Pete Seeger. In the Broadway The Sound of Music, his Captain von Trapp's Austrian accented sing of "Edelweiss" was sublime.
