I love you covering this! I was a competitive gymnast as a teen and the twisties are insane. I never had them but had a similar mental block after a bad fall on bars that I was never able to fully overcome. I couldn't bring myself to flip off the bar for anything. I tried once and stopped mid air and landed on my neck (thankfully into the pit so I wasn't injured). It's a tough sport. Especially when you realize how much abuse was going on in the sport for decades.

The funny thing is the same group of people who were talking crazy about her "quitting" were the same idiots that didn't know basic biology yesterday

Thanks for your input and validating how legitimate and serious this situation was. The full interview is available if you’re interested in hearing what happened in the back! She also dives even deeper into what brought her to this point in the Simone Rising documentary on Netflix!

Sadly her fears weren't totally unfounded. She got cruelly criticized by some, publicly. she got called selfish and weak by people who had no idea what the twisties were

There is a video by former male gymnast named Nile Wilson, done two years ago name the Twisties. He shows how to this day he has issues doing a layout, half the time he tries to do a layout but instead does a twist. He speaks with her fellow gymnast and another said there is one move that gives him the twisties and for him it was due to a major injury when he was younger. He doesn't remember it but his mind still does and he says his mind goes fuzzy when he tries that move.

Simone is the GOAT. The criticism is based on her skin color and gender.

One of the best older examples of mental blockages is Johnny Miller. He was one of the best golfers in the world at the time and on the biggest stage he got the yips and never recovered. I think it was the US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco

I remember this story, and love golf so he seemed to be one of the original “yips” athletes of our time👍

The hate snd vitriol little sis received from strangers “Specifically right wing political figures” made me so irate. And it didnt help everyone talking crazy was obese or just simply not qualified to make statements about any sport. Im so glad she showed up this Olympics and swept up the categories.

Her mental struggles were rooted in her being among those who were sexually abused by their previous doctor, Larry Nassar, as a teenager, in addition to the pressure that followed the insane expectations from the entire country
