THERE ARE NO WORDS
by Jack Broza Lawrence
Composed in response to the Beinecke Library Exhibition Gather Out of Stardust: The Harlem Renaissance and the Beinecke Library
Performed by Matt Keown and Jeff Stern
In July of 1917 thousands of African-Americans took to the streets of New York City to protest lynchings and anti-black violence. The crowd gathered on 59th St. and marched in silence down 5th Avenue. Reverend Dr. Charles Martin, one of the organizers of this “Silent Parade”, wrote in his announcement of the event, “The laborer, the professional man - all classes of the Race - will march on foot to the beating of muffled drums.” Featured in the Gather Out Of Stardust exhibition were four photographs of this event, each of which perfectly captures that solidarity which Dr. Martin called for. There Are No Words, for two marimbas and crotales, is inspired by these photos, the historic significance of this protest, and the universal power of silence.
